Opis:
Thanks to their numerous advantages, plastics are becoming more and more widely used in all branches of industry. The quantities of products, their packaging and, consequently, the amount of synthetic polymer waste are steadily increasing, what poses a high risk to the environment due to their long decomposition time. To reduce waste production is practically impossible, therefore it is very important to constantly implement new and improve existing methods of waste treatment. The following article presents one of the alternative methods for synthetic polymer waste treatment, which is low-temperature pyrolysis. Two pyrolysis processes were carried out. During the first experiment a polyethylene plastic material was used, in the second experiment a mixture of typical household recycling waste of codes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 were tested. During the thermal processing, the input material undergoes a chemical transformation due to breaking of long hydrocarbon chains. At the same time, high-energy density products, such as petroleum products and gas, are produced. The main advantage of the presented method is that it allows reducing preliminary technological processes to a minimum and it is easily automated, as it reduces the process to one compact installation. The reduction of the amount of stored waste and the recovery of petroleum derivatives, are additional advantages of pyrolysis implementation. That, in consequence allows reducing consumption of fossil fuel resources.

Opis:
This study investigates the effect of composite material stiffness on the accuracy of drilled holes and delamination in the drilling process. Two types of composite materials were tested: glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The drilling process was performed using dedicated drill bits. Samples were clamped in a vice of the Avia-VMC 800 HS vertical machining center. Drilling parameters were maintained constant but unsupported element length was changed. The unsupported element length was defined as an unsupported distance between the drilled hole axis and the sample attachment location. The maximum feed force Ff was determined in the experiments. The accuracy of drilled holes was estimated by optical microscopy. Diameters of the drilled holes were measured. Results made it possible to determine the recommended unsupported element length at which the hole dimensions were within the dimensional tolerance. The study showed a clear decrease in the drilled hole quality and a significant increase in the feed force, especially in the area of tool exit from the workpiece. In addition, the number of delaminated fibers increased with unsupported element length was determined in the study.

Opis:
Laser cutting of materials requires the execution of processing tests and the selection of the most favourable variant from the point of view of the adopted criteria of process quality assessment. This paper presents the example of a preparatory process, which shows that cutting polypropylene and polypropylene with 5 mm thick talc is not an easy process of material handling. A CO2 laser was used and by varying the utilized power from the laser and the beam speed relative to the material, cuts of varying quality were obtained. Criteria were also proposed for the selection of the best processing variant. It was concluded that the addition of talc to polypropylene can be a factor facilitating laser cutting of this material.

Opis:
Extrusion blow molding of technical products (EBM-TP) is a significant technological polymer manufacturing process ex. for the automotive branch. Implementation of the extrusion blow molding process in an operating arrangement of polymer technology is a component of many technological factors, but also of factors related to feedstock material. The products can be manufacturing with the participation of plastics recyclate. The homogeneity of the recyclate-virgin polymer mixture strongly influences the distribution of spreading the wall thickness of the final products. For this type product wall thickness distribution should be uniform and very close to each other or determined in a specific range of values. Work presents the mixture influence (HDPE recyclate-virgin polymer,) with different characteristics of mixing degree defined as homogeneous and heterogeneous, on the part features (the intake manifold airflow in a motor vehicle) with respect to the weight of the weight and wall thickness in reference required by the customer of the product. Mixtures of HDPE were prepared via a specialized gravimetric mixer, which is directly connected to the feed circuit extruder blow molding. They began to manufacture defined types of test specimen (actual Products of) and their evaluation according to criteria adopted burden of weight and wall thickness.

Opis:
The role of reverse logistics in creating added value for producers of plastics is presented here. The premise is the choice of reverse logistics for plastics on the one hand, considering their versatile applications, such as in the packaging, construction and automotive industries. On the other hand, an extremely important issue is that their production is characterized by high dynamics, has a significant impact on the environment, contributing significantly to the use of the valuable resource that is oil. This paper will focus on the economical and environmental optimization of reverse logistics processes in production enterprises. The presented article is part of a research project on developing application methods for the settlement of environmental-economic support for reverse logistics processes aimed at reducing consumption of energy and raw materials by plastics manufacturers, which ultimately translates into added value in terms of so-called environmental benefits.

Opis:
Plastics pollution is a major worldwide concern because there is strong evidence about marine influence on the human trophic chain. Thus, we experimented with the biodegradation of low density polyethylene (LDPE) by A. niger and A. terreus in order to increase the degradation rate without any co-substrate or photothermal treatment. Our contribution is to show how to degrade LDPE under minimum nutritional conditions using both LDPE and sucrose as carbon sources. Up to 30% weight loss was obtained by A. niger and A. terreus which were isolated from an Ecuadorian mangrove. The evidence of cracks and biomass growth on the LDPE surface samples showed the potential of both fungi species to operate under low nutrient concentrations. The outlook of the present work was focused on understanding the fungi survival under minimal conditions.

Opis:
Many methods have been developed to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste. New technologies have been developed to make high-temperature utilisation of these wastes possible. A promising method for the unconventional disposal of plastics by detonation was identified. The popular explosive ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) is a component mixture of oxidiser (ammonium nitrate) and fuel (diesel fuel). The optimal composition is 94.5% oxidiser and 5.5% fuel – a guarantee of complete and total combustion. Plastics have a chemical composition and oxygen balance similar to fuel oil. It is possible to replace the fuel share in ANFO by adding plastics and using the energy they contain. The amount of energy that can be recovered is high for PE and PP (at the level of 0.6) and PS – 0.5. Using polymers as ANFO components is advantageous for economic reasons – plastic waste will be eliminated during blasting works.

Green minimalistic approach to synthesize chitosan-based durable polymer hydrogel materials for supporting cell growth

Opis:
In this work, we present an innovative, crosslinker-free method for preparing chitosan-based hydrogel precursors, fully aligned with green chemistry principles and composed of only five non-toxic, readily available reagents. The key novelty lies in the use of glycerin, which, during thermal annealing, evaporates and triggers a surface or bulk chemical transformation of chitosan, depending on its concentration. This process significantly enhances the material’s mechanical properties after swelling—with up to a 35% increase in tensile strength and a notable reduction in water uptake compared to systems containing AMPS-based crosslinkers. FTIR analysis indicates a partial re-acetylation of chitosan, shifting its structure toward that of chitin, which correlates with improved hydrophobicity (as shown by increased contact angles up to 92°) and greater structural integrity. These improvements are particularly pronounced at glycerin concentrations of 10–20%, whereas higher concentrations (50%) result in brittle, non-moldable films. Importantly, preliminary biological tests confirm that the resulting hydrogels are effectively colonized by mammalian cells, making them promising candidates for bioimplant or tissue engineering applications. Surface morphology and compatibility were further assessed via SEM, AFM, and contact angle measurements.
