Application of a mixture of glycol polyethylenes for the preparation of microcorrosion casts : an observation
Autorzy:

Opis:
Preparation of microcorrosion casts that can be used for observation in SEM is a laborious, time-consuming procedure. The authors paid particular attention to the process of dissection of the microcorrosion casts. This prompted the authors to reconstruct the plastic mass, produced by the firm Gurr (Great Britain) in the 1970s, which was used by them in previous research to immerse the cast in order to minimise the damage. By using easily obtainable polyethylene glycols, characterised by different physical and chemical features, in order to obtain smooth surface of the section, a low-toxic mixture was composed, which protected the microcorrosion casts sufficiently and did not interfere with the physical and chemical properties of the cast.

Opis:
The effects of water potential on germination were studied in 18 wild populations of three yarrow species (Achillea tenuifolia, A. vermicularis and A. filipendulina) from different bioclimatic zones in Iran. Water potential between 0 and -0.6 MPa were obtained using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000) solutions. The study of water stress on germination showed that, regardless of the species and the populations, the lowering of the water potential reduced the capacity for germination and early seeding growth. These results indicated a strong genetic potential for drought tolerance during germination within each species. These differences in germination ability of wild populations of each species might be attributed to intraspecific variations resulting from the effects of natural selection and genetic pool background.

Opis:
A series ofpolylactide-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLA- PEG) block copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of L- or D-lactide in the presence of mono- or dihydroxyl PEG, using nontoxic zinc lactate as catalyst. Micelles were then prepared by direct dissolution of the obtained copolymers in aqueous medium without heating or using any organic solvents. Aqueous gel permeation chromatography and dynamic light scattering measurements were carried out to characterize the resulting micelles. Generally, mixed micelles containing both PLLA/PEG and PDLA/PEG copolymers appear lager and more compact compared to single ones. However, the size of mixed micelles is smaller than that of single ones which exhibit an anisotropic structure since stereocomplexation disfavors the formation of anisotropic micelles. The copolymer parameters such as structures, molar mass and PEG fraction strongly influence the formation of anisotropic micelles, and thus lead to various micellar sizes.

Analiza wpływu glikolu polietylenowego na komórki immunologiczne i komórki HepG2
Analysis of the effect of polyethylene glycol on immune cells and HepG2 cells
Autorzy:
Jeleń, Sylwia
Opis:
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been and continues to be the most widely used polymer used to improve therapeutics' delivery efficiency and effectiveness. Conjugation of proteins, peptides, small molecule drugs, and nanoparticles with PEG improves their pharmacokinetic profiles. This modification increases the solubility and prolongation of the half-life of the therapeutics in the blood due to the reduced rate of renal clearance and the evasion of the immune system, especially phagocytic cells, by hindering the opsonization of introduced compounds. In addition, the attachment of PEG increases the stability of therapeutics, preventing their aggregation and protecting against the action of enzymes. However, many recent studies and clinical observations have shown that PEG is not indifferent to the body and can activate the immune system. Following the administration of PEGylated therapeutics, the production of anti-PEG antibodies has been observed, as well as complement activation and hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis and pseudoallergy, which are attributed to the presence of PEG on the surface of the therapeutics. These events can lead to premature release of the drug, reduce the effectiveness of therapy, affect its safety, and increase side effects. To ensure the highest safety for patients taking PEGylated therapeutics and to be able to use PEG to modify drugs and nanocarriers, it is necessary to reassess the safety of using PEG and its impact on the body, with particular emphasis on the cells and tissues most exposed to its effects. The subject of this work is evaluating the impact of free PEG and PEG with a methyl group (mPEG) of different molecular weights on the mouse and human immune cells and a cellular model of hepatocytes.
Glikol polietylenowy (PEG) był i nadal jest najczęściej wykorzystywanym polimerem stosowanym celem poprawy efektywności dostarczania i skuteczności terapeutyków. Sprzęganie białek, peptydów, leków drobnocząsteczkowych i nanocząstek z PEG poprawia ich profile farmakokinetyczne. Modyfikacja ta zwiększa rozpuszczalność i pozwala na wydłużenie czasu półtrwania farmaceutyków we krwi, dzięki zmniejszonej szybkości klirensu nerkowego, a osłabieniu interakcji nanoleków z układem odpornościowym.

Opis:
Polyethylene glycol dinitrates (PEGN) with molecular weights between 400 and 20 000 gźmol-1 were prepared from polyethylene glycols by esterifcation with nitric acid/sulfuric acid in dichloromethane. The products were characterized by gel permeation chromatography. The yield of PEGN increases with increasing reaction temperature (0-40 °C) however large liberation of nitrogen oxides was observed at 40 °C. No infuence of reaction temperature (0-40 °C) on the cleavage of the polyethylene glycol chain during esterifcation was observed. The dependence of melting point on the molecular weight of PEGN was determined. Polyethylene glycol dinitrates with molecular weights Mn above 454 are not sensitive to impact. Heat of combustion of PEGN increases with increasing molecular weight. All samples tested decompose in a similar way during thermal exposition.

Opis:
The need for mass population vaccination against Covid-19 poses a public health problem. Allergic symptoms occurring after the 1st dose of the vaccine may result in resignation from the administration of the 2nd dose. However, the majority of patients with mild and/or non-immediate symptoms may be safely vaccinated. The only absolute contraindication to administration of the vaccine is an anaphylactic reaction to any of its ingredients. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), widely used as an excipient in various vaccines, is considered the primary cause of allergic reactions associated with administration of Comirnaty (Pfizer/BioNTech) and Covid-19 Vaccine (Moderna) vaccines. However, hypersensitivity to PEG reported to date seems very rare, considering its widespread use in multiple everyday products, including medicines and cosmetics. In the paper, current literature data describing mechanisms of hypersensitivity reactions to PEG, their clinical symptoms and diagnostic capabilities are presented. Undoubtedly, the issue of hypersensitivity to PEG warrants further research, while patients with the diagnosis require individual diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

Opis:
TiO2 is one of the most widely used metal oxide semiconductors in the field of photocatalysis for the self-cleaning purpose to withdraw pollutants. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is recommended as a stabilizer and booster during preparation of water-soluble TiO2. Preparation of SnO2/TiO2 thin film deposition on the surface of ceramic tile was carried out by the sol-gel spin coating method by adding different amount of PEG (0g, 0.2g, 0.4g, 0.6g, 0.8g) during the preparation of the sol precursor. The effects of PEG content and the annealing temperature on the phase composition, crystallite size and the hydrophilic properties of SnO2/TiO2 films were studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra revealed different phases existed when the films were annealed at different annealing temperatures of 350°C, 550°C and 750°C with 0.4 g of PEG addition. The crystallite sizes of the films were measured using Scherrer equation. It shows crystallite size was dependent on crystal structure existed in the films. The films with mixed phases of brookite and rutile shows the smallest crystallite size. In order to measure the hydrophilicity properties of films, the water contact angles for each film with different content of PEG were measured. It can be observed that the water contact angle decreased with the increasing of the content of PEG. It shows the superhydrophilicity properties for the films with the 0.8 g of PEG annealed at 750°C. This demonstrates that the annealed temperature and the addition of PEG affect the phase composition and the hydrophilicity properties of the films.
