Opis:: Terminology is one of the more difficult issues facing academics investigating ancient religious imaginations. The history of the terms "paganism" and "polytheism," as well as the primary caveats associated with their use, are outlined in this article. Although both names are artificial inventions with added meaning, "polytheism" is thought to be less reliant on Christian beliefs.

Opis:: The common meal with deities comprises one of the most popular religious rituals. It results from the popularity of offerings composed with such alimentary items like meat, bread, fruits, wine, oil, etc. This paper deals with the sacred dimension of the cultic banquets on the example of epigraphical and archaeological evidence. As case-studies are presented two cities: the Northern Mesopotamian city of Hatra (ca. 290 km northwest of Baghdad) and the Southern Mesopotamian city of Nippur (ca. 150 km southeast of Baghdad). The case of Hatrene sacral architecture together with written material in the local dialect of Aramaic defines very similar structures in Nippur as sacred space for cultic meals and helps to reconstruct the practices in the period from 1st c. to the mid-3rd century CE.

Opis:: The Islamic dogma of the One and Unique God introduces the concept of a transcendent God, the true being, the absolute Lord of the worlds to whom everything will return at the Last Day. The denial of this truth and associating with Him partners is idolatry, and it is an unpardonable sin. Such a concept of God guarantees the unity of the material and spiritual world. Man, discovering the Law of Unity, acquires a knowledge of the one God and consciously submits to His will according the innate Religion of Islam. God who is Almighty, Hidden, and full of wisdom (transcendence) is close to His creation and reveals himself through His “remnant” (immanence), which are the “Excellent Names of God”. The man answers to His presence with the love that he feels in mystical experience. In this way, the mystic frees himself from the world of multiplicity in order to be annihilated in Unity. Everyday life of a Muslim is the praise of the One God for His transcendence, thanksgiving for His immanence and mercy, and worship for His greatness.

Opis:: Dwie centralne prawdy wiary chrześcijańskiej wzbudziły u Muhammada sprzeciw. Nie do przyjęcia było uznanie „współuczestnika Boga”, który mieniłby się Synem Bożym. Dlatego Muhammad odrzucał wiarę chrześcijan w Jezusa jako wcielonego Syna Bożego oraz konsekwentnie – wiarę w Trójcę Świętą. Jego zdaniem były one nie do pogodzenia z monoteizmem, stąd uznawał je za bluźnierstwo. Koraniczna polemika w kwestii Trójcy Świętej miała wykazać bezpodstawność wiary chrześcijan, uwyraźnić monoteizm oraz oczyścić go z obcych wpływów religijno-teologicznych. Muhammad chciał w ten sposób „ochronić Jezusa” przed zarzutem o bluźnierstwo. Polemika Proroka z chrześcijaństwem dotyczyła jakościowej strony monoteizmu chrześcijan i koncentrowała się na „teizmie” w tym monoteizmie. Koran przyjmuje natomiast triadę bóstw – Allah (Bóg), Maryja (bogini), Jezus (syn boży) – ukonstytuowaną na wzór ludzkiej rodziny, występującą w panteonie bóstw politeistycznej Arabii.
Muhammad objected to the two central tenets of Christianity: belief in the Holy Trinity and in Jesus as the Son of God. He could not accept the idea of God having an associate, referring to himself as His son. He regarded it as a blasphemy that could not be made compatible with monotheism. The objectives of the Quran was to prove that the Christian faith was based on no good reasons, emphasise monotheism and cleanse it of foreign theological surplus. In this way Muhammad wanted to defend Jesus from the charge of blasphemy. In his polemics with Christians he was concerned with the qualitative aspect of their monotheism, and focused on the ‘theism’ in their monotheism. Quran presumes three gods [in Christianity]: Allah (God), Mary (goddess) and Jesus (god’s son), found in the polytheistic Arabia, made in the image of the human family.

Opis:: Why examine ancient Hawaiian religion for a concept of justice? There are at least three reasons: First, the ancient Hawaiian concept of justice was diametrically different from European or American jurisprudence. Justice in this “primitive” polytheistic religion had its own definition of justice that reflected a completely contrasting philosophy and theology, based on myth, legend, chants, and oral tradition. Second, the worldview of Hawaiian concepts and principles make salient the assumptions underlying Western definitions of justice. Third, this ancient concept of justice and its associated religious principles are still relevant today in the modern, codified, and Christian era of Hawaii. It is my thesis that balance and harmony are central to Hawaiian theology and therefore critical to justice theory.
Po co badać starożytną religię hawajską pod kątem koncepcji sprawiedliwości? Istnieją co najmniej trzy powody: Po pierwsze, starożytna hawajska koncepcja sprawiedliwości diametralnie różniła się od europejskiej czy amerykańskiej jurysprudencji. Sprawiedliwość w tej „prymitywnej” religii politeistycznej miała swoją własną definicję, która odzwierciedlała całkowicie odmienną filozofię i teologię, opartą na micie, legendzie, pieśniach i tradycji ustnej. Po drugie, światopogląd będący podstawą hawajskich koncepcji i zasad uwypukla założenia leżące u fundamentów zachodnich definicji sprawiedliwości. Po trzecie, ta starożytna koncepcja sprawiedliwości i związane z nią zasady religijne są nadal aktualne w nowoczesnej, skodyfikowanej i chrześcijańskiej erze Hawajów. Stawiam tezę, że równowaga i harmonia mają kluczowe znaczenie dla hawajskiej teologii, a tym samym dla teorii sprawiedliwości.

Opis:: It can be argued that the notion of the ‘axiological polytheism’ is a key concept which characterizes liberal society (democracy) in late modernity. We can observe its significant presence in I. Berlin’s concept of two liberties, and in J. Rawls’s concept of the social contract under the veil of ignorance, to recall some crucial examples where state neutrality is developed and defended. I have earlier proposed that in spite of the acceptance of the ‘value polytheism’ premise, it can be still claimed that on the ground of the ‘autopoiesis’ mechanism a political community as a body can legitimately prefer a comprehensive model of citizenship in order to keep the system on track. This is supported by the ‘social distribution of knowledge’ argument. In my paper I try to develop this argument and to examine some obstacles it can face when possible implementation in the fabric of social and political institutions is concerned. In particular I consider some problems which are posed by the uncontrolled professional activity of some types of experts which in consequence (may) influence decisions of those who are equipped with discretionary power (like civil servants and the state apparatus); and by that token they actually may lead to shift of the whole system with regard to the above mentioned premise which seems to be constitutive of the liberal democracy. In other words, do experts qua experts possess the privileged position among other fellow-citizens as far an access to the government procedures are concerned and do they change the power system by their backstage influence and through turning the democratic system into grotesque show and manipulative facade.
