Trans-humanism's and post-humanism's dialectics between truth and post-truth
Autorzy:
Banaś, Monika
Opis:
The aim of this paper is to invite the reader to reflect on the essence of truth and post-truth in two approaches present in humanities and social sciences: trans-humanism and post-humanism. The notions of truth and post-truth, just like those of trans- and post-humanism, do not have a single defining interpretation. This implies disputes about what truth is and what is the role of man as an being, capable of creative activity, and thus of creating other entities and concepts describing them. However, the problem still remains the doubt as to what extent the ability of creative action allows man to know the truth (alternatively, to establish it), and to what extent it leads us astray. Post-truth emerges as a proposition in the face of the impossibility of reaching a consensus on the former. It is similar in the case of trans- and post-humanism, as concepts offering improved, because more up-to-date, approaches to the exploration of the human being himself, the motives of his actions, and his progress. The issues are presented by means of a critical analysis of selected scientific discourses, including definitions and research approaches that are gaining popularity in academia of the so-called Western cultural circle.

Considering the issue of power in Foucault will always lead to comments on the issue of knowledge and vice versa. What I suggest in this paper, however, is to look into both topics presented in the work by Foucault separately, at least to a certain extent. I believe that the evolution of these two threads in his works allows us to evaluate their suitability differently as far as their relevance to contemporary culture is concerned. Foucault’s approach to the issue of power and its evolution towards so-called governmentality is evidence of how accurately he sensed the direction of changes to the Zeitgeist of Western civilizations, a fact which cannot be said about the evolution of Foucault’s approach to the issue of knowledge, leaning towards the question of truth and truth-telling. The aim of this paper is to substantiate the outlined and differentiated evaluation of Foucault’s oeuvre while, at the same time, highlighting the predominant features of contemporary culture. Special attention will be paid to the role of sociology in governmentality.

Opis:
The main statement of the paper is that the post-truth is expanding at an unprecedented rate, continuously forcing itself into new areas of public life and permeating millions of minds. This phenomenon has not so far been satisfactorily explained by researchers of global-range social phenomena. The paper presents various definitions of post-truth and its interpretations. The argument revolves around what truth means and what it is threatened by, as well as the most important institution that is, by definition, concerned about the truth: the university. The article outlines the functions of the university and contemporary conditions of its functioning, including the threats to the preservation of its mission and axiological foundation: striving towards the truth. The idea of the university, created in Europe at the beginning of the second millennium, has shown to be strong and durable. It has adopted various organisational forms, depending on the period and region. The secret of the universities’ persistence and meaning cannot be considered apart from the history of the European civilisation. However, the phenomenon of post-truth expansion is the most serious threat to this institution. The expansion of post-truth also leads to changes in the quality of the public life, bringing about its degeneration, with considerable contributions of the numerous pathologies of the Internet, distribution of lies and surprisingly quickly growing acceptance of this phenomenon.

Emotive sources of post-truth
Autorzy:
Juruś, Dariusz
Opis:
The first part of this paper briefly presents the phenomenon of post-truth, which is then confronted with emotivism, a position of 20th-century ethics or metaethics that ascribes an emotive and evocative meaning to ethical judgements, rather than a descriptive one. The second part shows briefly the theories of two main representatives of this view, namely A.J. Ayer and Charles Stevenson. The third part focuses on the objections to emotivism, primarily presented by Alasdair MacIntyre. Finally, the influence of emotivism on post-truth is discussed.

Opis:
This paper makes the attempt to highlight the role played in contemporary education by the notion of post-truth and the influence played in that matter by anti-intellectual tendencies. This issue seems to be imperious in the face of transformation tendencies of the schooling systems and the influence exerted by the world of politics in that context. This text reconstructs the most important aspects of the anti-intellectual stance, treating it as a specific phenomenon of a cultural nature. Furthermore, the emerging issue of post-education is addressed as it accompanies the anti-intellectual tendencies and strengthens their impact on the schooling level. Both issues are in a clear cause-and-effect relation to the phenomenon of post-truth.

Political communication in the era of fake news : the fight against disinformation on the web
Komunikowanie polityczne w dobie fake newsów : walka z dezinformacją w sieci
Autorzy:
Danek, Magdalena
Opis:
Social media are not only a space for making contacts and strengthening social ties, but also an increasingly important source of information. This fact is very crucial in the context of political communication. On the one hand, social networks have created a new platform of interaction between politicians and citizens,in particular during the electoral campaign, but on the other, due to its structure based on the rapid and direct flow of information, they proved to be an effective tool for spreading false content, so-called fake news and misinformation. This negative trend, most visible during the presidential elections in the United States in 2016, has become an impulse to undertake extensive measures to combat this practice. Among many entities engaging in campaigns against fake news, there were primarily enterprises from the ICT industry, but also governments, media publishers and international organizations. The main aim of the article is to indicate the most important actions taken (by the end of January 2018) in order to fight disinformation on the Internet. The text will also focus on the analysis of this activity in the context of potential danger of increasing control over the flow of information on the Internet and introduction of censorship on a mass scale.

Marie Antoinettes cake : post-truth in the French Revolution
La brioche di Maria Antonietta : la Post-verità nella rivoluzione francese
Autorzy:
Paura, Roberto
Opis:
It has long been established that the famous phrase "S'ils n'ont plus de pain, qu'ils mangent de la brioche", attributed to Queen Marie Antoinette in response to growing concerns about the shortage of bread in Paris on the eve of the French Revolution, is what today we would call a fake news, probably released for political purposes. The socalled post-truth society, where the diffusion of false rumors and news or shamelessly partisan conceptions prevails over real and verifiable facts, is not an invention of the 21st century, nor is it linked, as it is often stated, to the rise of the Internet and social media. This essay aims to demonstrate that pre-revolutionary French society was already a mature and complete post-truth society, and that this phenomenon was exacerbated during the Revolution.

Postprawda w życiu publicznym. Zapis debaty z udziałem Krzysztofa Brzechczyna, Cezarego Kościelniaka i Rafała P. Wierzchosławskiego. "Wolni i Solidarni. Między Ideą a Praktyką. Kwartalnik Społeczno-Polityczny", 2023, nr 1, ss. 30-56
Opis:
This debate on post-truth started with Krzysztof Brzechczyn’s analysis of the phenomenon from the classical standpoint, claiming, first of all, that post-truth is far from being a new concept. Gossip, rumor, slander, pamphlets – all synonymous with post-truth and as old as time – have functioned well, culminating with the systemic inversion of customary meanings in real socialist times, known colloquially now as newspeak. Rafał Paweł Wierzchosławski examined post-truth from the perspective of the ongoing (academic) discussion with regard to the so ciology of knowledge and science. In this context, he mentioned the category of deliberate ignorance, referring also to the problem of the impartiality of experts. Cezary Kościelniak, on the other hand, argued post-truth to be a modern the phenomenon linked to the development of the Internet and social media, and analyzed the phenomenon from the perspective of Christian philosophy. In the second part of the debate, the speakers answered questions from the audience.
