Opis:
The experimental material was made up by the plant organs of Brassica napus L. from a pot experiment during one vegetation period. There was investigated the effect of relatively high concentration of zinc, copper, lead and cadmium in soil on the rapeseed yield, the content of protein and oil in seeds. The impact of metals was defined based on the content of selected fatty acids in oil extracted from seeds. The highest contents of zinc and copper were found in leaves, lead – in roots and cadmium – in stems. The biological concentration factor values were respectively calculated for all the rapeseed organs. For Cu and Pb the values of biological concentration factor were low and very low for all the plant organs. The doses of Zn (300 mg × kg- 1, 600 mg × kg-1) and Cu (80 mg × kg-1, 160 mg × kg-1) applied in the pot experiment resulted in the translocation of metals from the roots to the leaves. The doses of lead (400 mg × kg-1, 1600 mg × kg-1) did not trigger any translocation of that metal from the roots to the above-ground rapeseed plant parts, however, after the application of the cadmium doses (2 mg × kg-1, 6 mg × kg-1), there was recorded a clear translocation of Cd to the rapeseed stems and the leaves. A relatively high content of zinc, copper, lead and cadmium in soil had a significant effect neither on the yield parameters and nor on the qualitative characters of the rapeseed seed. Neither did they affect the content of protein, fat and fatty acids in seed-extracted oil. The results of the pot experiment suggest that spring rapeseed is suitable for the phytoremediation of moderately heavy-metalcontaminated soils.

Opis:
The aim of study was to assess the effect of bottom sediments on the concentration of macronutrients (K, P, Na, Mg, Ca) and trace elements (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu) in the plant test. The experimental design comprised 6 treatments: soil (control), soil + 5% of sediment, soil +10% of sediment, soil + 30% of sediment, soil + 50% of sediment and sediment (100%) in relation to the soil dry mass. The test plant - maize was harvested after 70 days of vegetation. Bottom sediment added to soil had a positive effect on maize biomass in the lowest dose, i.e. 5%. Higher doses of the sediment caused a reduction in maize yield. Bottom sediment positively affected concentration of nutrients: N, Mg, Na, K, Ca, Zn, Ni, Cu of maize shoots. However, the shoot biomass did not meet for fodder with respect to quality. Applied bottom sediment, has high content of sandy fractions, acid reaction and low concentration of organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, can not be used as a fertilizer. Using bottom sediment from Narożniki reservoir in plant cultivation, one should take into consideration a necessity of application of supplementary NPK fertilization due to low concentration of these elements both in the bottom sediment and maize yield.

Opis:
W doświadczeniu wegetacyjnym założonym w hali wegetacyjnej Uniwersytetu Technologiczno-Przyrodniczego w Bydgoszczy badano możliwość wykorzystania rożnika przerośniętego (Silphium perfoliatum L.) w fitoremediacji gleb zanieczyszczonych ołowiem i kadmem.
In the experiment carried out in the vegetation hall the possibility of using Silphium perfoliatum L. in phytoremediation of soils contaminated with lead and cadmium was studied. It was shown that this species has taken up a small quantity of lead during one growing season and that there was no change in cadmium content in the plants throughout the experiment. Silphium perfoliatum accumulated from 10.77 to 29.26 mg Pb·kg-1 d.m. in the aboveground vegetative parts. These values were significantly higher than those measured for plants used as the control. Significant decrease in the yield of plant fresh weight with increasing doses of lead and cadmium was recorded. The results indicate that usefulness of Silphium perfoliatum in the process of phytoremediation is rather limited.

Opis:
The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the potential of chitosan alone and in combination with various agricultural wastes for the management of rootknot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita on eggplant cv. ‘BR-112’ under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that chitosan as a single or joint treatment with agricultural wastes significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced root-knot indices, and the nematode population in soil. As a result, of this, the growth and growth yielding attributes of eggplant were remarkably augmented. Chitosan as an elicitor induced plant mediated systemic resistance against M. incognita in eggplant. The results of the study demonstrated that maximum reduction in eggmass/root, eggs/eggmasses, nematode population and root-knot indices, was acquired by the treatments: chitosan + onion and chitosan + mentha. It was followed by chitosan + Brassica, chitosan + urad and chitosan + coconut whereas, chitosan combined with corn cob waste was found to be the least effective when compared to the control. The application of chitosan alone was effective but not very satisfactory. Compared to the control applications of all the treatments significantly increased plant growth in terms of length, fresh and dry weights, pollen fertility, yield and biochemical parameters such as chlorophyll, carotenoid content and antioxidant enzymes. This may have been due to the eliciting activity of chitosan, causing systemic resistance in the plant and the release of various toxic chemical compounds during decomposition which have lethal effects against the second stage juveniles of M. incognita and nematode multiplication.

Opis:
Cadmium is one of the toxic heavy metals which, getting in the nutrition chain through the soil-plant system, is capable of causing harm to human health. The objective of the trial was to study the effect of cadmium load in the soil-plant system. In pot experiments carried out under greenhouse conditions, effect of increasing Cd load on different crop plants (lettuce, maize) was studied. Literature data inform on the decisive role of soil reaction in mobility of cadmium in the soil. The answer was looked for the question of the effect of cadmium treatments at uniform rates on Cd uptake by plants on two soils quite different from each other in pH value. It may be concluded that increasing Cd load can result in the decrease of biomass production of maize and lettuce, but significant differences were obtained only on very acid SN soil. The concentration of Cd in plants increased on both soils as a consequence of growing Cd treatment rates. In corresponding treatments the Cd levels in lettuce and maize plants grown on very acid SE soil were several times higher than in case of plants on the KE soil. Obtained results confirm that Cd mobility on acid soil may be much higher what is clearly reflected in cadmium uptake by plants. On acid soils the cadmium uptake by plants is more intensive, therefore this toxic element is more likely to get in the nutrition chain. Considerable differences in Cd uptake can be detected among the plant species. On the same soil at the same rate of cadmium treatment. Cd level in lettuce plants was by several times higher than in maize. The lettuce plants can accumulate cadmium in the leaves at high concentrations without any visible symptoms. In the experiments no toxicity was observed on test plants.
