This article delves into the multifaceted landscape of local government employees' job decisions (JD) and job engagement (JE) by investigating their tenure intentions. The study employs a novel perspective by examining the influence of prestige, differentiating between internal and external prestige, on local government officials' perceptions. Drawing on data from regression analyses, this research sheds light on the intricate relationship between JD, JE, and the perceived prestige of the local government. The findings of this research demonstrate that local government employees' job engagement and job decisions are indeed influenced by their perceptions of the government's prestige. The data obtained from regression analyses reveal the significance of this relationship. These results have profound implications for the management and leadership of local government agencies. Understanding the pivotal role of prestige in shaping employee behavior can assist in formulating strategies to enhance job engagement, promote job retention, and ultimately contribute to the effective functioning of local government organizations. Furthermore, this study provides a nuanced understanding of the factors driving the commitment and choices of public sector employees, offering valuable insights for policymakers, HR practitioners, and researchers in the field of public administration.

Opis:
The purpose of this analysis is to look at occupational prestige phenomenon from a new perspective which takes into account its multidimensional nature. Using factor analysis of occupational prestige ratings from the 2006 Polish module of the European Social Survey, the 1987 Polish IFiS-PAN survey and the 1989 United States Social Survey data, the author presents dimensions in which respondents evaluate occupational prestige of several positions. At least three enduring dimension of evaluating prestige have occurred across time and space (in two countries). Those dimensions are: manual labour, key functions in organisations and importance (utility) for society. Moreover, in the Polish data from 2006 the author finds an additional dimension, namely the public function dimension. Four dimensions found in the Polish data from 2006 are examined using variables which characterise respondents' socioeconomic status and attitude to life - especially associated with work. Beside the public functions dimension, there is no significant difference in evaluating prestige on a particular dimension between respondents with various socioeconomic status and attitude to life. The presented approach to occupational prestige can also explain some changes in prestige ratings. The author draws a comparison between Poland in 1987 and 2006 and shows significant shifts in perception of some occupations.
Celem tej analizy jest spojrzenie na fenomen prestiżu zawodów z nowej, uwzględniającej wielowymiarowy charakter tego zjawiska perspektywy. Opierając się na danych Europejskiego Sondażu Społecznego dla Polski w 2006 roku, badaniach przeprowadzonych przez IFiS PAN w 1987 roku oraz danych z Generalnego Sondażu Społecznego przeprowadzonego w Stanach Zjednoczonych w 1989 roku, szukam wymiarów oceniania prestiżu zawodów. Przynajmniej trzy zgodne wymiary ocen prestiżu można znaleźć w różnych punktach czasowych i przynajmniej w dwóch społeczeństwach. Są to: wymiar pracy wykonawczej, kluczowej roli w organizacjach i użyteczności dla społeczności. Ponadto, jeżeli chodzi o polskie społeczeństwo w 2006 roku, wykrystalizował się wymiar funkcji publicznych. Prezentowane ujęcie daje możliwość trafniejszej interpretacji hierarchii prestiżu niż klasyczne teorie. W dalszej części badam zgodność nadawania prestiżu w czterech wymiarach ocen w Polsce w roku 2006 ze względu na zmienne społeczno-ekonomiczne oraz postawy charakteryzujące światopogląd respondentów. Nie licząc wymiaru funkcji publicznych, stwierdzam silną zgodność nadawania ocen prestiżu. Dalej analizuję różnicę między wzorami prestiżu i dzięki niej próbuję zrozumieć zmiany, jakie nastąpiły między 1987 a 2006 rokiem w polskiej hierarchii prestiżu. Analiza wzorów prestiżu pokazuje, jak zmiana percepcji pozycji zawodowych wpływa na ich położenie w hierarchii prestiżu. Ustalenia zawarte w tym artykule można traktować jako nowy głos w sporze – który w pewnym momencie ucichł, ale nie został jednak rozstrzygnięty – dotyczącym odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, czym jest prestiż zawodów i jakie mechanizmy za nim stoją.

Occupational prestige is one of the most explored research problems in history of sociology. However, the concept of prestige remains blurred (and in many questionnaires this word is replaced with other). In the research for my PhD thesis I aimed at constructing social definition of occupational prestige. I was mainly interested in individual perspective of members of occupational groups that are considered prestigious. My research plan was based on triangulation of methods and sources of data. In this paper I present results of my quantitative research and qualitative (IDI interviews) research.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the role of honoris causa doctorate in academic culture. The history of the honorary doctorate is reconstructed to a certain extent and the difference between the research doctorate and honoris causa is considered. Furthermore, the author focuses on the controversial issues connected with the honoris causa, including cases of buying or rejecting the honor as well as various political contexts of the relevant decision-making process. The analysis of the honorary doctorate focuses on the conviction that it is the topmost acknowledgement of the values and contribution of the society of the person thus honored.

The goal of this study is to identify whether PESCO can be one of the tools for future projects in medicine and whether it can be used to strengthen the military medicine of the EU and, simultaneously, be in synergy with the civilian sector by providing support to the civilian field, and, finally, can EU member states increase their prestige through PESCO. The study, which is based on qualitative research methods, shows that based on Latvia’s case, strengthening the medical field by participating in PESCO can lead to countries promoting their prestige on the international stage, as well as strengthening civil-military cooperation to build much stronger policies within the EU member states. Firstly, the findings showed that from all 47 PESCO projects, only two are related to the field of medicine. Secondly, with the whole world being affected by COVID-19, PESCO can be used for new projects related to the field of medicine. Thirdly, different types of projects can be initiated under PESCO, for example, a new kind of transport for evacuation, new types of medical devices, the creation of new regional laboratories and research centres, development of new analytical and biotechnological equipment, improvement of logistic chains, the establishment of unique and specific training institutions for civilian and military medics, and the development and use of robotic technologies or drones. Finally, countries that engage in epidemiological security measures during COVID 19 are clearly enhancing their prestige by not only demonstrating their readiness to react to the current situation, but also by taking practical action.

Fame studies are a well-developed and acknowledged branch of academic reflection on culture, and celebrity authors have recently been more and more often the subject of these analyses. The problem is that the category of famous writer is quite capacious and may include professional and unprofessional authors representing opposing sides of cultural production. Different disciplines interested in literary fame focus on specific examples of celebrity authors that may seem obvious from their point of view but from a wider perspective they are not. Consequently, it is not clear who the celebrity author is, which leads to confusion and the merging of separate phenomena, making the elitist critique of star authors easier. This article presents an attempt at the typology of literary fame which aims at clarifying the problem and distinguishing a very specific category of famous writer who is theoretically, structurally, and functionally most complicated and to whom the most advanced studies are devoted. The typology proposed includes three types of literary fame along with their characteristics. The first refers to celebrities of non-literary fields (politicians, athletes, singers, stars of the internet etc.) who happen to publish a book. The second includes professional authors of bestsellers in genre literature whose names are as famous as their titles and may be used in marketing practices. The last and most important type refers to authors who enjoy both popularity and cultural prestige. They combine fields, forms of social recognition and kinds of capital that should be mutually supplanting. Going further, these authors fall outside the traditional division into high art and popular art as they smoothly move between a number of fields, gathering both the cultural and the economic capital. In short, they straddle the divide between autonomy and heteronomy, which distinguishes them from stars operating in historical mass culture and from writers who, despite the popularity, do not enjoy cultural prestige.

The main aim of this article is an attempt to trace the social meaning and ways of perceiving the representatives of the musical profession in Poland by using the category of occupational prestige. The analysis is based on the results of a research on the dynamics of musical professional careers in Poland conducted in the years 2015-2016 (a research grant awarded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage). The article consists of five parts. The first part provides an analysis of the various ways of defining and researching prestige in social sciences. The methodological framework of the research is presented in the second section. Parts three and four cover the results of the research on the occupational prestige of musical professions in Poland. The last section – summary contains the main conclusions derived from the research, as well as proposals for potential topics of further inquiry.

Two Genders, Two Varieties of Prestige: Fulfilling Cargo As a Way of Gaining Esteem

Mexican cargo systems are a very popular topic of anthropological reflection. This article belongs to that current; however, its author attempts to show the cargos not as the axis of the social structure (as it is done in classical ethnographic studies), but as an individual career path available to both men and women. On the basis of material from the village of Tócuaro in the Michoacán province of Mexico, she demonstrates how one of the most difficult cargos, organising the feast of the Virgin Mary of the Candlemas, facilitates the process of gaining prestige. Interestingly, this prestige is different in the case of men and women. Despite that difference – which to some would certainly corroborate how unequal are the social opportunities for men and women – this prestige constitutes huge motivation to undertake the equally huge task of organising a feast for the entire community.
