Opis:
A new plesiadapiform primate, Phoxomylus puncticuspis gen. et sp. nov., is described based on an isolated but well−preserved upper molar from the early Tiffanian (late Paleocene) Cochrane 2 locality, southwestern Alberta, Canada. Although possessing a robust postprotoconal fold, an unambiguous synapomorphy of primates, Phoxomylus differs from other plesiadapiforms in its retention of primitive molar features, including acutely pointed major cusps and sharp crests, deep trigon basin, and lack of the bunodont coronal specializations that purportedly marked the transition from insectivorous non−primate ancestors to omnivorous/frugivorous basal primates. Coronal features of the holotype of P. puncticuspis imply that during mastication the mandible was adducted in a near−vertical plane, with little capacity for the transverse movement that is already seen in molar morphology of the earliest and most basal plesiadapiform, Purgatorius. Instead, molar morphology in P. puncticuspis implies emphasis on vertical piercing and shearing, specializations for insectivory unlikely to have been derived via reversal from plesiadapiform ancestors having more bunodont molars adapted for omnivory/frugivory. If that is the case, a long “ghost lineage” must link P. puncticuspis to other, basal plesiadapiforms that have yet to be discovered but that had not yet evolved omnivorous adaptations of the dentition.

Opis:
Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, in his teaching paid special attention to such notions as Church and Homeland. He focused on the value of the event, which was the Baptism of Poland in 966. Masovia was one of the stops on which the Nation’s faith was awakened, as well as the awareness of free and responsible man, creating history based on law and morality of the Decalogue. Primate was visiting Płock many times, during different occasions. He was preaching a word, which like the biblical grain was supposed to fall on the soil of human hearts and bring fruit. Historical and cultural role of Masovia, as a borough constituting an integral part of Polish state since its beginning and its contribution to culturalreligious development of Poland, was particularly emphasised during two Primate’s speeches: during millennial solemnities in 1966 and during the jubilee of a diocese in 1975. Primate Stefan Wyszyński, while talking about Masovia, emphasised its high position in building the State and the Church. Invoking figures, important for Masovia (bishops, priests, princes), he always pointed to the values, which they represented, and which were timeless. What Primate of Poland Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński said in Płock Masovia and about Masovia was fully reflected in the words of the Saint John Paul II uttered on 7 VI 1991 during his stay in Płock – “Płock has profoundly rooted in the history of Poland and the Church” – emphasising the role of this city, the capital of historical Masovia, in the millennial history of our Homeland.

Opis:
A second species of the microchoerine omomyid genus Melaneremia, M. schrevei sp. nov. is described. It has been collected from the upper shelly clay unit of the Woolwich Formation, earliest Ypresian, Eocene, of Croydon, Greater London, UK. Phylogenetic analysis shows M. schrevei to be the most primitive member of the main clade of the Microchoerinae and demonstrates the initial dental evolution that separated this European subfamily from other omomyids. Calibration of the Woolwich upper shelly clay unit to the later part of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum shows that speciation leading to the Microchoerinae took place within 170 ky of the beginning of the Eocene. Tentative identification of M. schrevei in the Conglomérat de Meudon of the Paris Basin suggests close time correlation with the upper part of the Woolwich Formation.

Opis:
Archbishop Antoni Kazimierz Ostrowski was the primate of Poland in the years 1777-1784. In older historiography Ostrowski was praised for his deep inner life, ascetical practices, exemplary life, works of mercy, approachability and hospitality. However, some new investigations put in doubt his exemplary priestly conduct. Primate Ostrowski who was sick then spent last two years of his life (1782-1784) abroad where he underwent medical treatment. We have a large correspondence from this period between the primate and the cathedral chapter of Gniezno. The author of the article analyzes these correspondences and clearly shows that archbishop Ostrowski, even when abroad, he really cared for his archdiocese’s affairs. Among his particular interest were the construction of a new seminary building, the renovation of the metropolitan cathedral of Gniezno and the expanding of the Primate’s palace in Warsaw. The article wants to prove that – despite numerous opinions about the Primate’s weaknesses – till the end of his life he strove to be a good shepherd, doing a lot of good things for his archdiocese and for the Church.

Opis:
The article contains an analysis of family and genealogical connections of one of the most prominent historical figures of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 17th century – Andrzej Olszowski, Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland – politician, clergyman, writer and intellectual. He was a descendant of a middle-class gentry who settled in the land of Łęczyca, sealing himself with the Wilczekosy (Wolf Scythes) coat of arms, attesting to the origin of Clan Prusy (the medieval refugees from Pruthenia attacked by Theutonic Order). Despite this modest pedegree he had such outstanding figures among his ancestors as Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski – a Renaissance writer and humanist, and his nepoties included the famous brothers Załuscy – bishops, patrons of art and science, the creators of the library, which became the leaven of the polish National Library.

Opis:
In the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church the primate is a jurisdictional rank between the pope and one or more metropolitan archbishops. It would be rather difficult to define the exact role or enumerate the powers of the primates in general as their prerogatives differ widely in different eras, and besides canon law, they are heavily influenced by papal or royal privileges and regional customs. A future summary of the medieval history of the primates would, therefore, require the independent analysis of every single national primacy that has ever existed in western Christianity during this period. The present study analyses the process how the archbishops of Esztergom consolidated their dominant position in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. Although the dignity of the Primate of Hungary was only conferred to the archbishops at the end of the fourteenth century, several sources indicate that many of their powers existed centuries before the official papal appointment to primate. After a short review of the institution’s history in the Early and High Middle Ages, based on the jurisdictional conflicts between the two Hungarian archbishops, I present the powers and privileges that belonged to the prelate of Esztergom. Finally, based on the results of previous studies and the critical analysis of primary sources-among them a document that has never been discussed before in Hungarian historiography-I reconstruct the early stages of the evolution of the primatial role of the Archbishop of Esztergom.
