Opis:
The article discusses selected problems related to both principal component analysis (PCA) and factor analysis (FA). In particular, both types of analysis were compared. A vector interpretation for both PCA and FA has also been proposed. The problem of determining the number of principal components in PCA and factors in FA was discussed in detail. A new criterion for determining the number of factors and principal components is discussed, which will allow to present most of the variance of each of the analyzed primary variables. An efficient algorithm for determining the number of factors in FA, which complies with this criterion, was also proposed. This algorithm was adapted to find the number of principal components in PCA. It was also proposed to modify the PCA algorithm using a new method of determining the number of principal components. The obtained results were discussed.

Opis:
The article attempts to find an algebraic formula describing the correlation coefficients between random variables and the principal components representing them. As a result of the analysis, starting from selected statistics relating to individual random variables, the equivalents of these statistics relating to a set of random variables were presented in the language of linear algebra, using the concepts of vector and matrix. This made it possible, in subsequent steps, to derive the expected formula. The formula found is identical to the formula used in Factor Analysis to calculate factor loadings. The discussion showed that it is possible to apply this formula to optimize the number of principal components in Principal Component Analysis, as well as to optimize the number of factors in Factor Analysis.

Opis:
This article presents the performance of a new approach to determine the model order for the modified Prony method applied to swath acoustic mapping. Key requirements for any mapping application are depth determination accuracy and angular resolution. Depth determination accuracy is strictly related to angular accuracy and geometrical relations between receiver and sources of the backscattered signal. Angular resolution determines detection capabilities of targets laying on the seafloor. Performance of the proposed method, in terms of these two parameters, is tested against a simulated signal in a number of generic configurations, and compared to the results of other methods applied to the same signal.

Opis:
The aim of this research is to determine the minimum number of uncorrelated dimensions which can describe national competitiveness (NC). NC is thought of as the ability of a nation to provide a conducive environment for its firms to prosper. It is shown that the environment affects national productivity catalytically through the interactions with the production factors while itself remaining unchanged. Selected World Economic Forum’s indicators are used for determining the components of the environment. The Principal Component Analysis has revealed three orthogonal dimensions of NC. Countries are represented by the points in the three-dimensional space. The weighted Euclidean distance from the origin to the ith point is proposed as a novel measure of the ith country’s level of NC.

Opis:
A new type of discriminant space for functional data is presented, combining the advantages of a functional discriminant coordinate space and a functional principal component space. In order to provide a comprehensive comparison, we conducted a set of experiments, testing effectiveness on 35 functional data sets (time series). Experiments show that constructed combined space provides a higher quality of classification of LDA method compared with component spaces.

Opis:
This article presents a new approach to determine the model order (number of principal components) in the modified Prony method applied to swath acoustic mapping. Determination of the number of principal components is a crucial step in the modified Prony method. In the proposed approach the model order is chosen based on the underlying physical model of the underwater acoustic environment, and utilised signal processing operations. This data-driven approach, attempts to make use of all available information to assess the number of signals arriving at the receiver using pipeline processing in lieu of iterative processing.

Opis:
Chinese calligraphy is one of the most important Chinese arts: a form of entertainment as well as an embodiment of figurative thinking. In this paper, a statistical model-based approach to generating new styles of Chinese character strokes is proposed. Original calligraphy samples are aligned in a common co-ordinate frame and a training set consisting of landmarks is generated semi-automatically. The most significant features of the training set are extracted and a statistical model is built in order to generate strokes in new styles. The Bezier curve is used to fit the discrete contour data.

Opis:
Effective interpretation of the data on breeding programs is important at all stages of plant improvement and the genotype by trait (GT) biplot was used for two-way wheat dataset as genotypes with multiple traits. For this propose, 18 rye genotypes with specific characteristics were evaluated in randomized block design with four replications. The GT biplot for rye dataset explained 61% of the total variation of the standardized data (the first two principal components explained 40 and 21% respectively). The polygon view of GT presented for 11 different traits of rye cultivars showed six vertex cultivars as G1, G3, G6, G8, G11 and G13 whose genotype G8 had the highest values for most of the measured traits. Generally based on vector view, ideal genotype and ideal tester biplots, it was demonstrated that the selection of high seed yield will be performed via seed number per spike, first internode weight, number of spike per area and harvest index. These traits should be considered simultaneously as effective selection criteria evolving high yielding rye cultivars because of their large contribution to seed yield. The genotypes G8 and G7 following to genotypes G3, G18 and G19 could be considered for the developing of desirable progenies in the selection strategy of rye improvement programs.
