Opis:
The main purpose of this research is to find out how foreign terminology effects on Polish terms in the field of typography and book publication process. The author focuses on etymological aspects of specialist terminology used by printers, type-setters and nowadays desktop publishers. Mentioned terms travelled between European countries along with the technological transfer. To track down all etymological threads and borrowings from foreign languages, author analyzed lexical data from many specialist and professional dictionaries and on-line lexicology bases. Research might be helpful to put in order and understand terms which are often misused according to terminological chaos caused and fixed by careless or literal translations, especially in computer environment. Presented words are only selection from the most popular terms used in publishing process, and should be considered as contribution for further research.

Opis:
There are several causes of vibration of off set printing presses. Major are cyclic work of feeders and deliveries, gaps with mechanisms for fixing plate and blanket in cylinders of printing pair and inappropriate stress between those cylinders. All mentioned above causes increased exploitation of bearings, gears driving cylinders and other parts of the printing press. The consequences of vibration are also breaking of paper web and such artefacts as doubling and streaking on the prints. In this paper printing pair cylinders of lithographic printing press are described as a two-degree of freedom model. Solution of a system of differential equations, which describes this model shows influence of vibration of printing unit cylinders on the fluctuation of the ink film thickness on the prints (magnitude of streaking phenomenon).

Opis:
Vibrations in offset printing presses are serious problem, which beside influence on machines’ parts, are also source of problems with printing process and achieving prints of right quality. In this paper construction of offset printing unit is presented. Reasons of vibrations and their types in printing units are shortly described. Moreover, this article shows the role, which some of printing unit’s elements play in resisting of vibrations appearance. There is model of printing unit of sheet-fed offset printing machine presented in here. Model is described by the system of differential parametric equations. There were computer simulations realized, that pointed conditions, which should be fulfilled, so the parametric vibrations occurred.

This book discusses the printers’ devices used in Poland-Lithuania in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The compositions that served to identify the products of individual printers are explored here as previously unacknowledged research material for cultural studies: they allow for the reconstruction of the mentality of contemporary printers as well as their co-workers and reading public. The book investigates relationships within early modern intellectual communities and shows that the textual and visual discourses of the printers’ devices were pan-European, reflecting the networked communities of European centres of learning and commerce. It documents the broad range of the output of Polish Lithuanian presses as well and is therefore also a study of book culture in a multinational and multilingual state, whose inheritance is poorly recognised internationally.

This article develops issues addressed in a letter written by Wacław Anczyc. The content of the letter presents the opinions of the Association of Owners of Printing Houses of Western Galicia and their views on the problems of Galician printing at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These problems include irregularities in granting licenses for running a printing house, compliance with the price list for printing works, and unfair competition in printing.

Opis:
The article presents the results of archaeological and architectural investigations that have been carried out within a former printing house at the Lubrańskiʼs Academy in Ostrów Tumski in Poznań, together with a collection of lead pieces of type collected between 2002 and 2014. Archaeological evidence serves as a pretext for revising the history of printing houses operating in the area since the turn of the seventeenth century towards the end of the eighteenth century.

Opis:
The Communists started to take control of the typographical industry already in 1944. Printing presses were taken over by various institutions, administrative units, and political parties. Some companies were included in the group run by the Central Administration of State Typographical Plants, which was reorganised several times, and subsequently placed under supervision of various ministries. During the years 1951-1956, typographical plants were administered by the Central Office for Publications, Typographical Industry and Bookselling. The war losses, estimated at 85% of the pre-war potential, combined with the difficulties constructing the presses and related machinery, lack of trained personnel quality of the printing materials (paper, ink, glue, cardboard), and with introduction of central planned economy into the typographical production processes, all resulted in poor quality of the printed books and other publications.
