Opis:: In the first half of 19th century in Russia, being a child of parents from upper class, was not enough to earn the name of true nobleman. It was only a beginning of the arduous process. From the cradle the offspring was taught that the aristocrat should excel in courage, Western manners and languages, general education, artistic talents and athletics. A true Russian nobleman could not differ in any way from his Western European counterpart. In this paper we analyze the childhood reminiscences of Alexander Pushkin as well as his works understood as an example of the influence of the Western model of upbringing on the personality and development of a Russian noble’s child.

Opis:: Despite recent research on home-based education and teaching of children in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, the subject of home and private tutors has yet not been properly addressed. Though there are more or less extensive mentions on the subject in question in articles devoted to home tutors or home tutelage, they do not, however, delve deeper into the investigation of the problem. Therefore, the present work attempts to characterize this position of appointed, or hired, teachers who were involved in the process of education of children in Polish families in time of partitions. The main problem is approached from the two following perspectives – the aim of the article is to: 1) indicate more precisely the status of private tutors, their social background, goals to be attained by them, their duties, responsibilities and conditions of work, i.e. a determination of their real participation in the education of children from Polish families during the time under scrutiny; and also 2) to show the contemporary standpoint expressed by the then educational columnists and journalists on the very idea of private tutoring and private tutors, as well as their postulates, recommendations to be followed and advice concerning hired teaching staff. The source material for the present analysis of the capacity and function of private tutors has been provided by relevant educational literature for professionals and parents written in the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, professional educational periodicals and women’s and family magazines of the time. The source materials provide an excellent base for a determination of the extent and the scope of the interest of the contemporary columnists and journalists in this group of private tutors and private tutelage at the time, but also present the attitude towards the phenomenon manifested by the general public. The analysis is supplemented with additional material excerpted from contemporary memoirs and diaries that serve here as a useful illustration of the reality and practice in the actual teaching process of appointed tutors in the times of national freedom struggle in Poland.

Opis:: W zbiorach rękopisów przechowywanych w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Poznaniu znajdują się trzy tomy wspomnień Claude’a Antoine’a Pocharda – francuskiego księdza, żyjącego w czasach rewolucji francuskiej, należącego do prêtres réfractaires i w roku 1792 zmuszonego do opuszczenia ojczyzny. W latach 1792–1796 pozostawał on na emigracji w Szwajcarii, później przyjął posadę guwernera synów Józefa Skórzewskiego, starosty gnieźnieńskiego, i Heleny z Lipskich Skórzewskiej. Zapiski księdza Pocharda prowadzone w latach 1792–1833 dotyczą obu tych okresów. Ich lektura daje możliwość śledzenia losów duchownego w trudnych czasach rewolucyjnych, a także zagłębienia się w relacje naocznego świadka wydarzeń z życia rodzinnego Skórzewskich, wydarzeń ukazanych w szerszym kontekście historycznym – polskim i europejskim. Artykuł jest wprowadzeniem do badania tych rękopisów jako wielowątkowego materiału mogącego zainteresować zarówno literaturoznawców, jak i historyków, pozwalającego weryfikować wiedzę i stawiać hipotezy dotyczące dziejów jednego z najznamienitszych rodów wielkopolskich.
The manuscript collection of Poznań University Library holds three volumes of the memoirs of Claude Antoine Pochard, a French Roman Catholic priest who lived during the times of the French Revolution and belonged to prêtres réfractaires and who, in 1792, was forced to leave his homeland. Between 1792 and 1796 he emigrated to Switzerland and later accepted the post of a private tutor to the sons of Józef Skórzewski, the then starosta (royal official) of Gniezno, and Helena Skórzewska née Lipska. The notes made by Father Pochard between 1792–1833 cover both mentioned periods in his life. Pochard’s notes give an interesting insight into the life history and the vicissitudes of their author in the difficult times of the revolution, as well as provide the reader with Pochard’s observations of an eyewitness of the family life of the Skórzewskis viewed in a wider historical context of the history of Poland and that of Europe. This article forms an introduction to the study on these manuscripts that are a unique combination of multi-faceted research material on different levels of analysis that is of interest not only to specialists in literature but also to historians. The material provided by the memoirs makes it possible to verify our present knowledge on the times in question and to set forth hypotheses concerning the history of the one of the most prominent families of the Wielkopolska region.

Opis:: Private tutoring has become the norm in the education sector in many parts of the world. Some data show that this trend has been increasing. Despite its significance, the problem has received very little attention in education research. The aim of this paper is to discuss this controversial phenomenon. The research problem focuses on finding answers to the following questions: What is the nature and the scale of this problem? Do private tutors increase students’ learning autonomy or do they develop passivity? Why do parents employ private tutors for their children? The research method is a critical literature review.
Korepetycje są znaną i powszechną formą dodatkowej nauki w wielu krajach. Dane pokazują, że trend ten nasila się z roku na rok. Pomimo eskalacji zjawiska jest ono przedmiotem tylko niewielu badań. Przedstawiony w pracy problem badawczy dotyczy odpowiedzi na następujące pytania: Jaka jest natura oraz skala korepetycji? Czy prywatne lekcje rozwijają autonomię w zakresie uczenia się? Dlaczego rodziny decydują się na współpracę z korepetytorem? W niniejszej publikacji zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa literatury przedmiotu.
