Opis:
Professor Sheynin was born on November 29, 1925, in Moscow. In 1932−1942 he attended the high school, typical “ten-year” high Soviet school. In 1951 he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Geodesy. He also worked as a geodesist in the field, and taught geodesy at a geodetic technical college, was subeditor of the journal of abstracts, Astronomy and Geodesy, and a teacher of mathematics in a school. For six years he worked as a lecturer at the Plekhanov Institute of National Economy, in Moscow. In 1959 he graduated from Moscow State University, the Faculty of Mechanics. where he defended a dissertation about the error theory. In May 1991 O. Sheynin moved with his family (wife and the son) to Germany (Cologne, then to Berlin). Now he lives in Berlin. He has been a German citizen since 2005.

Opis:
Aim: To present own thoughts on the processes that accompany fulfilling professorial careers at universities. Methods: Referring to personal experiences both at and out of the university, and drawing on own achievements. Results: Based on own experience, the author presented forecasts related to the “profession” of professor. The author puts forward the thesis that education has a special role to play and therefore should be independent, with less bureaucracy, giving opportunities for creative work and devoting more time to students. Conclusions: The analysis of the topic shows that there is a need to review and suggest assessments to be applied by students of pedagogy and related fields. It also provides an opportunity to generate new topics, especially concerning recent research.

Professor Doctor habilitatus h.c.h.c. Z.H. Hellwig was born on 26 May 1925 in the small town of Dokszyce, not far from Wilno. Both of his parents were teachers. His father, Henry Hellwig, taught German and his mother taught Mathematics. Prof. Z. Hellwig was educated at King Zygmunt August Gimnazjum in Wilno. However his secondary school graduation certificate (’matura’ in Polish) he only obtained after the Second World War in Wrocław, in 1947. In the same year he enrolledin the Wyższa Szkoła Ekonomiczna (University of Economics) in Wrocław, from which he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Opis:
Aim: The aim of the article is to show that the ideology of commercialization cannot affect all areas of a human life, and the society and its indispensable part, which is the academic community, should have the right to decide on the directions of scientific development. The central figure of a university should be the professor, not the university’s administration. Methods: The comparative historical research was applied. It belongs to the social sciences which make it possible to study and examine historical events in order to create explanations that are valid beyond a particular time and place, either by a direct comparison to other historical events, theory building, or a reference to the present day. Results: The conducted research shows that a professor ceases to be a key person for the decision-making processes that are fundamental to the functioning of the university. The professor loses the possibility of fulfilling his/her historically conditioned role, because today this role is undergoing rapid and radical transformations. Conclusions: The processes that are taking place (including the commercialization of science) certainly have a negative impact on the academic community, and thus on the entire society. It is necessary to radically change the narrative about the university (intercepting the narrative).

Assosiate Professor Jerzy Prochorow was born and brought up in Siedlce. He connected his scientific thesis with the Institute of Physics of Polish Academy of Science, where he obtained the degree of PhD and PhD with habilitation, later the academic title – Professor of Physical Science. He worked as a director of Institute of Physics (PAS), the chairman of Scientific Council (IF PAS). He was also a member of Scientific Council IF PAS for a long time. He received scientific awards for his work and activity.

Opis:
Freedom for every human being is what allows him to behave and act as a person, and simultaneously it is in the centre of his life. It makes up his asylum, mysteries, and heart at the same time, and also is the sense of values professed by him and the whole sense of his life. Due to it, it also becomes one of more important and key problems of every man irrespective of how he approaches the issue of freedom and in what way he perceives it. Professor Słomski believes that although personalism is philosophy based on man, it unceasingly also draws from different currents which help to perceive man in a decidedly wider context. Due to it one can also assume that practically every philosophy which considers individuals can be treated as personalistic, even if this current will be Marxism. Such an approach caused that also in Professor Słomski’s philosophy there are present references to Marxism and existentialism, which are collated with Christian personalism.

Opis:
Taking up Jacques Derrida's concept of „the university without condition”, we try to argue that the fundamental role of the university in the history of Europe has consisted in a specific kind of radicalism which, on the one hand, allows the individual for the exploration and pursuit of his/her interests and vocation, and, on the other, makes it mandatory to realize that the development of the individual always takes place in the space of conjoint communicative experience. Thus, what is at stake in any discussion of the university education is a future of democracy and citizenship. Using the works of, among others, Hanah Arendt, Immanuel Kant, Plato, Dewey, and Friedrich Hölderlin the essay makes a point that to save what holds between people, i.e. to redeem the human bond in the society, the university always aims at the acts of Deweyan deliberation thus discussing and thus determining appropriate significance to the public and the individual.
