Opis:
The subject of analysis is the old printed Cyrillic editions of the 16th – first quarter of the 17th century books, acquired by the Central Science Library of NAS of Belarus from Old Believers M.S. Sevastyanov and N.M. Sorokin. Based on a study of handwritten notes, stamps and other book signs, the author reveals the history of these copies. The owners of the books were representatives of various social groups. All the features of the exemplars are represented in the catalogues of the Cyrillic editions of the Central Science Library of NAS of Belarus.

Susceptibility of Polish provenances and families of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) to colonization by Phytophthora cambivora

Opis:
Phytophthora cambivora (Straminipila, Oomycota) causes root rot and stem canker on several deciduous tree species in Europe. However, very little is known about the variation in susceptibility to P. cambivora colonization among provenances and families of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). We studied variation in susceptibility of one French and 16 Polish provenances, representing 62 families. Samples were taken from three test plots located in the Brzesko Forest District. Oak susceptibility to P. cambivora was assessed by measuring lesion length following inoculation of excised shoots with two isolates of P. cambivora. There was significant variability in susceptibility among the 17 provenances tested. The highest susceptibility to P. cambivora was apparent in several provenances including Tronçais, Zaporowo, Runowo, Opole, and Krotoszyn; while the most resistant provenances originated from Chojnów, Siedlce, Płock, Krotoszyn-90 and Wioska. There was also significant within-provenances variation in susceptibility to P. cambivora.

Opis:
Species with continuous distribution area will be impacted by climate change in different ways. That is related to the population’s geographical position and climate features of the population formation. Short-term response of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) was studied with taken into consideration intraspecies features of populations. Provenance tests in the Arkhangelsk (62.60 N, 39.98 E) and Vologda (62.60 N, 39.98E) regions located in the north of the Russian Plain were used. Provenances collection (23 provenances from the northern, middle, and southern taiga subzones and mixed forest zone) from areas with different climate characteristics was considered. Clinal variability and a reaction norm of vegetative and generative response to various levels of temperature change and seed transfer were studied. Average actual height and diameter values for 31-year provenances and calculated values for provenances were compared using ‘latitudinal growth coefficient’ proposed by I.V. Volosevich (1984) for the north of the Russian Plain. Provenance reproductive ability response was assessed using seed-bearing trees’ numbers in provenances of the 1st class of age. Pine growing in the north of the Russian Plain would respond to warming by productivity increasing more significantly than pine growing in the south. Response of pine from the northern and middle taiga subzones on climate warming can be expected on 1.01 m and 1.12 cm to temperature rise by 100°C for height and diameter, and 0.85 m and 0.93 cm for seeds transfer to 1 degree of northern latitude to southward. Probable reaction norm for pine reproduction potential under temperature change by 100°C of the sum of the temperatures above 10ºС and seed transfer by 1 degree of northern latitude can be expected about 6%.

Opis:
The publication presents a source study review of the provenances of the early printed books from the library of the Berdychiv Monastery of Discalced Carmelites, which functioned from the 17th up to the first half of the 19th century. Nowadays the historical collection “The Library of the Berdychiv Monastery of Discalced Carmelites” is preserved in the V.I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, it amounts to 4852 volumes and is the largest one among the book collections of the Roman Catholic monasteries, which are stored in the libraries in Ukraine. The article emphasizes the importance of source studies and the role of provenances in the historical library science research. The main types of provenances (handwritten notes, exlibrises, superexlibrises, seals), found in the books of the Berdychiv collection are presented, and their informative content is highlighted in relation to the ways of reconstruction of the monastic book collection.

Opis:
Omawiany zbiór obejmuje liczne dysertacje akademickie wydane w czołowych ośrodkach ortodoksji luterańskiej, głównie w Jenie i Wittenberdze, teksty z zakresu filozofii, historii Kościoła, polemiki z innymi wyznaniami chrześcijańskimi. Teksty niereligijne stanowią margines.
The article presents Jeremias Hentschel (1662–1709), the deacon of the Lutheran parish in Leszno, his own writings and the collection of books that he handed over to the parish library, also endowed by him. The deacon endowed the sum of 940 guilders for the construction of the building of the library as well as 144 works in 25 volumes that had been purchased by him between 1682–1687. The volumes have distinctive provenance marks: the acronym JHLP, standing for Jeremias Hentschel Lesna Polonus, embossed on parchment bindings of the books. The collection includes numerous academic treatises and dissertations published in Orthodox Lutheran centers, notably in Jena and Wittenberg, as well as philosophical texts, materials on the history of the Church and polemics with other Christian denominations. Non-religious texts are scarce.

Opis:
The subject of the article is the phenomenon of handwritten notes on the pages of old prints. Due to their astonishing variety, these notes constitute source material with great research potential, well beyond the history of reading and the history of the book as such. Using the previous observations obtained in the autopsy research with the use of the provenance method, the author presents a study of three examples and conclusions regarding the types of writing activity of owners and users of an antique book in the context of their individual approach to the book and reading. The issues were presented based on old prints materials from the collections of the Polish Academy of Sciences of the Gdańsk Library, taking into account the methodological issues related to obtaining provenance information from the collection of old prints, which in the discussed aspect are still insufficiently developed source data resources.
