Opis:: Public space is an important element of urban structure, playing various spatial, social and economic roles in towns/cities. Its quality influences the quality of life of the inhabitants and the attractiveness of the town as a whole. Public space located in town center is the most representative of its identity and image, and also serves multiple functions and activities. The quality of urban space depends on different factors, which have been discussed in professional literature for the last few decades. The author of this paper developed a model for assessment of the quality of public space in town centers based on studies of methods already used in Poland and abroad, and the analysis of trends and ideas which should be taken into consideration while constructing a set of criteria for assessment methods. The main goal of this paper is to present the methodology of research on the quality of public space in town centers using this model. An important element of the model is the proposed method of delimiting the research area – the town center – based on identification of key public space of a town. The model comprises three methods, which can provide valuable information on the quality of public space, and also serve as a basis for constructing ratings of towns in each of these methods and the model as a whole. The research conducted using this model in chosen medium-sized towns of the Łódź region showed that the results of ratings obtained using particular methods and the whole model coincide with subjective opinions on public space in town centers given by its users and professionals evaluating it.

Opis:: The concept of beauty in the landscape of the city has become relative; the aura of the place, attractiveness, value to attract customers regardless of the time of the day and year became important. Not always the public space gives good energy to the recipient. Sometimes, contrary to the expectations of the originators of consumer offer for this space, it is even considered to be repulsive. The phenomenon of generating good or referred to as bad energy by urban public spaces existing in reality, is an interesting research topic. It can accommodate both the newly created public spaces, old, historic spaces currently being reformed and iconic space. The way to create new successfully cases of public spaces is relying on multidisciplinary studies of the sociology and psychology of architecture.

Opis:: Przestrzeń publiczna w Polsce w ostatnich latach podlega postępującej prywatyzacji i fragmentaryzacji. Jest to zjawisko bardzo niekorzystne ze względu na funkcje, jakie przestrzeń ta pełni w strukturze przestrzennej miast i wsi, decydując o możliwości zaspokojenia różnego rodzaju potrzeb, w tym przede wszystkim społecznych, mieszkańców, i wpływając tym samym na jakość ich życia. Nasilaniu się tych niekorzystnych procesów sprzyja z pewnością odreagowanie polskiego społeczeństwa na realny socjalizm w nowo ukształtowanych warunkach neoliberalizmu i gospodarki rynkowej, ale także polskie prawodawstwo w zakresie planowania przestrzennego ułatwiające komercjalizację przestrzeni miast i wsi oraz zawłaszczanie przestrzeni publicznej w różnej formie. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie różnych sposobów pojmowania i znaczenia przestrzeni publicznych, mechanizmu kształtowania takich przestrzeni w Polsce, a także miejsca, jakie przestrzeń publiczna zajmuje na nowo budowanych osiedlach w strefie podmiejskiej Poznania.
Public space in Poland has seen advancing privatisation and fragmentation in the recent years. This is a highly undesirable development because of the functions that this space performs in the spatial structure of towns and villages, offering their residents a possibility to fulfil a variety of needs, primarily social, and thus affecting their quality of life. What favours those harmful processes is certainly Polish society’s wish to get over feasible socialism in the new conditions of neo-liberalism and a market economy, but also Polish physical planning legislation, which makes it easy to commercialise urban and rural space and to appropriate public space in a variety of manners. The article presents various ways of understanding public spaces, the mechanism shaping such spaces in Poland, and the place that public space is given on newly built housing estates in the Poznań suburban zone.

Opis:: Cultural space revitalisation is a specific kind of city centre renewal. It especially aims atimproving a degradad urban structure in the aspect of spatial and social attractiveness. In the paper, the author deals with questions of directing a city centre revitalisation process in the right way. In author’s opinion it is needed to prove the necessity of the search for solutions to the current spatial problems within a city centre simultaneously considering some extra questions. Having reached the proper level of social and economic stabilization, other kinds of problems will be addressed subsequently. Therefore, it is necessary to think about the future right now, and programme long-term and interdisciplinary strategies for the city downtown development. In conlusion, it is essential to provide the right spatial politics to stimulate the realization of a compact city idea.

W kolejnej części omówione zostały funkcje przestrzeni publicznych. W zasadniczej części tekstu przedstawiono funkcje, które spełnia wobec nowych mieszczan katowicka ulica Mariacka.
The author, individually or as a member of a team, has been conducting research on functioning of the public space in Upper Silesia towns for a few years now. The text presents a few reflections which have arisen as a result of these studies. The author concentrates on the problems of new bourgeois and functions which public space performs toward them. Showing the Katowice Mariacka street as the space for new bourgeois is the main aim of this article. At the beginning the author attempts to present issues related to the formation of new bourgeois in Poland. Then he describes the specific character of the analyzed Mariacka street and defines functions of the public spaces in general. The main part of the text is dedicated to the relations between Mariacka Street and new bourgeois. As a result it has become possible to define the exact meaning of that street for new bourgeois in Katowice.

Opis:: Artykuł podejmuje problem funkcjonowania miejskiej przestrzeni publicznej. W części pierwszej wskazano sześć społecznych znaczeń przestrzeni publicznych: użytkowe, interakcyjne, obywatelskie, aksjologiczne, symboliczne i tożsamościowe. W ich przedstawieniu przyjmuje się perspektywę kulturalistyczną związaną z procesem doświadczania przestrzeni przez jej użytkowników. Empirycznym kontekstem do analizy są wnioski z badań nad miejskimi przestrzeniami publicznymi realizowane w miastach Polski w drugiej dekadzie XXI w. W drugiej części artykułu analizowane są zagrożenia dla funkcjonowania miejskich przestrzeni publicznych. W tym kontekście wskazuje się ryzyka modernizacyjne, poczucie zagrożenia, prywatyzację przestrzeni, turystyfikację, wzrost znaczenia technologii informatycznych w procesach relacji społecznych. Artykuł kończy się konkluzjami podkreślającymi wzrost znaczenia terenów zielonych dla mieszkańców miast, przywrócenie politycznego znaczenia przestrzeniom miejskim, wykorzystywanie rozwiązań ekologicznych w kreowanych przestrzeniach publicznych. Akcentuje się także fakt, że dobre przestrzenie publiczne przyciągają użytkowników przestrzeni miejskich, umożliwiając im realizowanie aktywności opcjonalnych.
The article deals with the problem of the functioning of urban public space. The first part of the text focuses on six social meanings of public spaces: functional, interactive, civic, axiological, symbolic and identical. Their presentation adopts a cultural perspective related to the process of experiencing space by its users. The empirical context for the analysis is research projects on urban public spaces carried out in Polish cities in the second decade of the 21st century. The second part of the article analyzes the threats to the functioning of urban public spaces. The following processes are referenced in this context modernization risks, a sense of security, privatization of space, touristification, and the growing importance of information technologies in social relations processes. The article ends with conclusions indicating the increased importance of green areas for city dwellers, the restoration of civic meanings of urban spaces, and the introduction of sustainable solutions in the created public spaces. It is also emphasized that suitable public spaces attract users of urban spaces enabling them to carry out optional activities.

Opis:: Crowdfunding is a form of funding projects (business, scientific, social, artistic, etc.) based on small but numerous payments, collected mainly through Internet communities. The article presents the current state of interest in this form of public art funding, both in Poland, and abroad. The analysis of crowdfunding websites shows several features of this mechanism used for public art funding. It encourages artists to engage in more active participation on the Internet, especially on social networks’ level, which is particularly important in the all-or-nothing financing system. Crowdfunding also encourages people to be more active citizens, as financial support for specific projects in the field of public art is not only an endorsement, but also a real act of participation in the processes of creation of public space. On the other hand, crowdfunding has very limited ability to control and influence the artistic and social value of projects. Reliance on the “wisdom of the crowd” may therefore lead to the promotion of mediocre initiatives, neither presenting a high aesthetic value, nor bonded to the space in which they are to be found. There are also other risks associated with crowdfunding of public art, such as the risk of rollover of such initiatives from public institutions (e.g. local governments) solely on the shoulders of citizens, or the lack of intellectual property protection.
