Opis:
In dinosaurs and other archosaurs, the presence of foramina connected with internal chambers in axial and appendicular bones is regarded as a robust indicator of postcranial skeletal pneumaticity (PSP). Here we analyze PSP and its paleobiological implications in rebbachisaurid diplodocoid sauropod dinosaurs based primarily on the dorsal vertebrae of Katepensaurus goicoecheai, a rebbachisaurid from the Cenomanian–Turonian (Upper Cretaceous) Bajo Barreal Formation of Patagonia, Argentina. We document a complex of interconnected pneumatic foramina and internal chambers within the dorsal vertebral transverse processes of Katepensaurus. Collectively, these structures constitute a form of PSP that has not previously been observed in sauropods, though it is closely comparable to morphologies seen in selected birds and non-avian theropods. Parts of the skeletons of Katepensaurus and other rebbachisaurid taxa such as Amazonsaurus maranhensis and Tataouinea hannibalis exhibit an elevated degree of pneumaticity relative to the conditions in many other sauropods. We interpret this extensive PSP as an adaptation for lowering the density of the skeleton, and tentatively propose that this reduced skeletal density may also have decreased the muscle energy required to move the body and the heat generated in so doing. Given that several rebbachisaurids inhabited tropical to subtropical paleolatitudes during the extreme warmth of the mid-Cretaceous, increased PSP may have better enabled these sauropods to cope with extraordinarily high temperatures. Extensive skeletal pneumaticity may have been an important innovation in Rebbachisauridae, and perhaps also in saltasaurine titanosaurs, which evolved an even greater degree of PSP. This may in turn have contributed to the evolutionary success of rebbachisaurids, which were the only diplodocoids to survive into the Late Cretaceous.

Opis:
In this report we present ablations of complex left atrial arrhythmias in 3 male patients using the bi-directional steerable transseptal sheath (Visigo) which is visualizable by the 3D electro-anatomical system. Ablations of complex left atrial (LA) arrhythmias were performed in 3 patients. In the first 2 patients typical transseptal punctures were performed, followed by mapping with the LassoNav catheter and PVI (one patient also had isolation of the posterior segment). The last patient had a residual atrial septal leak, therefore ablation without fluoroscopy was attempted. An anatomical map of the right atrium was made. The ablation catheter and the Vizigo sheath were introduced into the LA through the leak in the septum. LA, pulmonary veins and 3 tachycardia loops were mapped. Lines were made in the roof of LA, in the mitral isthmus and within the atrial septum, restoring the sinus rhythm. Times of procedures/fluoroscopy were: 185, 185, 205min / 5.5; 3.8 and 0min. In the group of the last 10 previous ablations, these times were respectively: 209±48min/5,6±1,8 min. We conclude that the Vizigo sheath reduces the risk of electrode and sheath dislocation into the right atrium and the need for fluoroscopic verification during maneuvers performed with the sheath. It is also a step towards simpler left atrial ablation without the use of fluoroscopy.

Opis:
Microparticles (MPs) made of fast biodegrading biomaterials, loaded with drugs, are considered a superior treatment method for pulmonary infections. One of the promising biomaterials for obtaining such a drug delivery system (DDS) is poly(sebacic anhydride) (PSA) due to its favourable degradation kinetics and mechanism. In this paper, we present a study of manufacturing MPs from PSA loaded with curcumin (CU) for pulmonary purposes. MPs were manufactured by oil-in-water emulsification; their morphology and size distribution were evaluated using optical microscopy, while the encapsulation efficiency and drug loading were obtained by the fluorometric assay. The cytotoxicity of the MPs, both the empty ones and loaded with CU, was analysed by in vitro tests with BEAS-2B human lung epithelial cells. To this end, metabolic activity by AlamarBlue assay and fluorescent staining (DAPI/ eosin) of the cells were performed. The MPs produced were round, regular in shape with diameters in the range of 1-5 µm and of yellow colour originating from CU. The CU encapsulation efficiency ranged from 42% to 55% and decreased with a higher CU ratio. The drug loading ranged from 4% to 11% and increased at a higher CU ratio. Both empty and CU-loaded MPs did not show a cytotoxic effect at concentrations up to 10 µg/ml.
