Opis:: The common problems of learners that contribute to absenteeism in school include malaria, cough/catarrh, typhoid, headache and stomach ache. This led to the formulation of national school health policy in Nigeria to promote health services in schools. In view of the foregoing, this study assesses principals’ perception of health services in secondary schools. The study population consists of 551 principals of secondary schools (public and private) in Kwara State, Nigeria. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were employed to select 20 principals. Instrument tagged “Interview Protocol on Health Services (IPHS)” was used to elicit data from the participants. Data collected was transcribed and analysed via thematic approach. Findings revealed that majority of the schools does not have school clinic to dispense health services to learners. Our fidings also show that most of the schools lack health personnel and equipment. This study concludes that comprehensive health services were not provided for learners. The study recommends that the government should come up with policy statement on school health services that will help to provide quality health services to the learners. Adequate budget should be made by the government for the implementation of the policy. Lastly, the study provides practical and methodological contributions to the body of knowledge in the fild of education.

Opis:: The social and geographical mobility, including international migration, interlink and interplay but are approached by different research methods. This article makes an effort to combine these approaches of researching mobility. The studies on social and occupational mobility of migrants may relate to, at least, three dimensions: (1) between sending and receiving countries (a comparison of the pre-departure and during migration socio-occupational positions of migrants); (2) in the receiving country (socio-occupational positions of migrants are compared to those of natives); (3) in the sending country (a comparison of the pre-on-post migration socio-occupational positions of migrants). The article considers the third approach. First part relates to the critical analysis of various approaches of researching social mobility and international mobility. In the following, as based on the nearly two decades of studies of Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw, various options of analyses of occupational careers of international migrants have been presented. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches have been taken into account in this article. Therefore, this article made possible an analysis of pros and cons of both approaches and brought an evidence that they complement each other while studying occupational careers of migrants.

Opis:: In the current paper chosen interrelations of psychoanalysis and scientific research are presented. The main focus of the study was on the significance of psychoanalytic inspiration in conducting research interviews, creating the conditions of data gathering (projective situation), and drawing on interpersonal relationship between an interviewer and an interviewee. As a result of qualitative research literature review, three areas of the interview development were proposed: 1) to go beyond simple verbatim transcript (to collect non-verbal information as a source of emotional-relational aspect of the interviewee’s speech); 2) to go beyond the perspective of the research participant’s perspective as the source of information (to collect the introspective data form the interviewer about the relationship that was experienced during the interview); 3) to compare the information from different sources and the readiness to search for well justified patterns of data (especially comparing the data derived from the interviewee and interviewer both in verbal and non-verbal aspects). The preliminary attempt was to discuss such issues as: ways of non-verbal data collection, transference and countertransference analysis in research interview, the specificity of diagnostic and research interview.

Opis:: This article investigates the subjective life satisfaction of Russian immigrant physicians in Finland. It focuses on how life satisfaction is subjectively experienced and interpreted post migration in a bid to identify the resources which influence it in both work and family domains. The advantage of life satisfaction is taking it as a unifying cross-disciplinary conceptual framework and as a multidimensional analytical approach, including macro-societal, meso-relational, and micro-personal levels. We use the concept of the migratory career to analyse work and family life on migration journeys. These life evaluations are analysed using a sociological conception of subjective life satisfaction and a psychological conception of wellbeing as guiding principles in theory and analysis. Based on 26 semi-structured qualitative interviews, the study finds that an interplay between societal-structural and personal-relational resources makes the interviewees satisfied with their work and family lives. Societal-structural resources included the work environment, income, life security and stability, while personal-relational resources included social support, social trust, and family relationships. Beyond the classical income and job security, we find our participants’ experienced and interpreted life satisfaction is essentially associated with outcomes of family-friendly and supportive work conditions. Moreover, social and personal security and family stability are important for their quality of life in a characteristic Nordic social environment.

Opis:: Autorka przedstawia założenia badań biograficznych jako badań interpretatywnych w nawiązaniu do sposobu ich uprawiania we współczesnej andragogice. Twierdzi, iż stały się one popularne, ze względu na powszechne przekonanie, że nie trzeba posiadać wyrafinowanych kompetencji, by je uprawiać. Tymczasem zidentyfikowane przez Autorkę praktyki badawcze, które nazywa: wiernością procedurze, wyczarowywaniem wyników badań czy traktowaniem badań biograficznych jako dyskursywnych wymagają zaawansowanej wiedzy dotyczącej epistemologii oraz wysokiej świadomości metodologicznej.
The author shows assumptions of biographical research as interpretative research with reference to the way it is conducted in modern andragogy. She states that it attracted general attention due to the popular belief that this kind of research does not require sophisticated competence. Meanwhile, research practices identified by the author, which she calls – faithfulness to the procedure, conjuring up research results or treating biographical research as discursive ones requires specialist knowledge of epistemology, as well as increased methodological awareness.

W pierwszym rozdziale zaprezentowane są podejścia metodologiczne zastosowane w obu dziedzinach badań oraz omówione są wyzwania metodologiczne związane z podejmowaniem tego typu analiz. Trudności te wskazują na konieczność stosowania różnych podejść metodologicznych, w szczególności podejścia ilościowego i jakościowego. W rozdziale 2 przedstawione zostały wyniki analiz ilościowych wykorzystujących dane zastane, przede wszystkim zbiory danych OBM UW. Analizy te pozwalają określić charakter karier zawodowych polskich migrantów międzynarodowych w podziale na kariery zmienne i stabilne oraz wskazać na różnice między migrantami i osobami niemigrującymi. W rozdziale 3 zostały zaprezentowane wyniki badań jakościowych, przede wszystkim wywiadów biograficznych. Dane te zostały zanalizowane na dwa sposoby: poprzez analizę kluczowych zdarzeń i analizę historii życia. Oba te podejścia pozwalają lepiej zrozumieć zarówno obiektywne, jak i subiektywne znaczenie migracji dla karier zawodowych migrantów. To znaczenie może być bardzo zróżnicowane ze względu na obiektywną sytuację migrantów, jak i postrzeganie przez nich roli pracy zagranicą w całości kariery zawodowej
The Working Paper discusses the relations between two kinds of mobility: socio-occupational mobility and international mobility. The first chapter relates to the methodological challenges both of qualitative and quantitative nature. The challenges demand application both, hand in hand, qualitative and quantitative methods. The second chapter presents results of quantitative approach based on data extracting from CMR datasets, collected throughout the time of political and economic transition in Poland. The analyses conducted in this chapter allows for distinguishing two paths of occupational careers, in dichotomy: stable and changing/ ranging. The third chapter discusses qualitative findings of the analysis allowing to understand the role of migration in the occupational paths of migrants. The qualitative approach undertakes two ways of analyses: critical events in people’s lives and life history. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches presented in this paper allow for better understanding of both objective (quantitative) and subjective (qualitative) meanings of migration in occupational paths. The meanings can be differentiated, pending on the objective situation of migrants, e.g. structural conditions and migrants’ own perception of the role of migration in their lives.

Opis:: W artykule dokonano przeglądu wybranych badań psychologicznych, w których jako źródło danych wykorzystano teksty pisane, w tym dokumenty osobiste. Scharakteryzowane zostały procedury badawcze i rezultaty w ramach dwóch podejść: ilościowego i jakościowego. Rezultaty badań ilościowych zostały wybrane pod kątem ich przydatności dla interpretacji tekstu (zależności między formą wypowiedzi a stanem psychicznym lub trwałą dyspozycją psychiczną) ukierunkowanej na osobę narratora. W ramach podejścia jakościowego przedstawione zostały badania dotyczące ustalania znaczeń (sensów) podmiotowych konstytuujących tożsamość osobistą (narracyjną lub dialogową) lub sens życia. Punktem wyjścia są klasyczne badania biograficzne Ch. Buehler, następnie omówione są psychologiczne badania dzienników z getta, wybrane strategie i ustalenia w ramach ponad 20-letnich badań nad tożsamością narracyjną w ujęciu D. McAdamsa oraz badanie wykorzystujące teorię dialogowego Ja H. Hermansa w klinicznej psychologii stosowanej.
This article reviews some selected psychological studies, the source of which are written texts, including personal documents. The test procedures and its results were described in two ways: the quantitative and the qualitative one. The results of the quantitative research were selected depending on their use for the text interpretation, with the focus on the narrator (the relationship between the form of expression and a mental state or permanent mental disposition). The research on fixing meanings of personal identity (narrative or dialogue), or the meaning of life, is set as the qualitative approach. The starting point is a classic biographical study of Ch. Buehler, then a psychological study based on diaries from the ghetto, then some selected results of over 20-years’ study on the narrative identity of D. McAdams and finally the study using H. Hermans’s Dialogical Self Theory in clinical psychology.

Opis:: The article describes the process of designing a mixed strategy – from the qualitative approach to the quantitative approach. Important in this approach is the idea of integrating both research strategies, which is supposed to foster more effective cognition of the studied phenomenon. The authors describe the stages of the conducted qualitative research (theoretical assumptions, methods of collecting and analyzing empirical data) and the planned stages of quantitative research aimed at constructing a psychometric tool based on the cognitive effects of qualitative research. The article presents the results of qualitative research (the first stage of the mixed strategy) – the Model of Life Re-Decisions (four stages of self-relation) and Biographical Orders. The model depicts breakthrough life changes in the context of self-realization, from the perspective of broad humanistic psychology. The authors’ intention is to draw attention to the value of teamwork and to inspire readers to break through research patterns (searching for new research solutions).
Artykuł zawiera opis procesu tworzenia projektu badań w strategii mieszanej. Autorki prezentują swoją drogę przejścia od metod jakościowych do ilościowych oraz swój pomysł ich twórczej integracji. Projekt badawczy opisany jest nie tylko od strony metodologicznej, ale zawiera także autorską koncepcję teoretyczną w postaci Modelu re-decyzji życiowych. Autorki podejmują wątki przełomowych zmian życiowych w kontekście samorealizacji, z punktu widzenia szeroko rozumianej psychologii humanistycznej, oraz tego, jak połączenie różnych typów danych sprzyja bardziej efektywnemu badaniu danego zjawiska. Intencją autorek jest inspirowanie do przełamywania własnych schematów naukowych oraz ukazanie wartościowości współpracy i zespołowości.

Scharakteryzowano również dwie podstawowe metody badawcze, na których oparto procedurę badawczą: analizę bibliometryczną oraz jakościową analizę dokumentów. Rozdział kończy dyskusja na temat potencjalnych trudności i ograniczeń w studiach prowadzonych zgodnie z zaproponowaną metodyką.
The universal nature of grounded theory methodology enables its wide application across various research domains. To ensure methodological consistency in conducting and reporting research by authors from diverse academic disciplines, a unified research approach was developed. This chapter is dedicated to describing this purpose. It presents a schematic representation of the research process and discusses its individual stages. Furthermore, two key research methods forming the basis of the research procedure are outlined: bibliometric analysis and qualitative document analysis. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the potential challenges and limitations associated with studies conducted using the proposed methodology.
