Opis:: The main goal of the article concerning the parliamentary election in 2015 in Poland was to study the way the quality press presented the Razem/Together Party in the election campaign, the least (in terms of social support) the national electoral committee. Based on content analysis of Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita considering exposure, forms, context and themes of the party presentation there were some conclusions presented referring to the qualities of the presentation in the light of the media functions resulting from the liberal democratic model.

Opis:: The study deals with the issue of news values and their application in two typologically different print groups, in serious and tabloid newspapers. We assume that different print categories work with different values because they access the reader differently. On the other hand, economic problems, especially a loss of readers and the subsequent loss of advertisers, also lead serious newspapers to follow topics and process them in a way that is closer to the segment of tabloid journalism. The differences between typologically different groups of the press are wiping out, which, in particular, is considered a shortcoming in the case of serious titles. Through content analysis results, the authors explore news values and themes of the daily Plus Jeden Deň and the daily Denník N within a defined time period to find out what values the typologically different newspaper prefer, and therefore what topics they offer to readers.

Opis:: This research proposes the comparative analysis of the symbolic representations of Maidan in the Ukrainian and Polish media outlets that comprise tabloid and quality publications. Different types of symbols are identified in the news analysis, reports, and feature stories on Maidan. The typology of symbols is worked out on the basis of the Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms and Langer’s symbol theory. The coded types of symbols include symbol-products, symbol-concepts, symbol-slogans, symbol-situations, symbol-processes, and symbolic actions. With the help of the content analysis it is found that some most visible symbols in the media coverage of Maidan coincide in the Ukrainian and Polish print media. These are the symbol-concept “barricade”, the symbol-concept “Berkut”, and the symbol-process “dispersal of Maidan”. However, there are symbols that have either quantitative or qualitative significance in the Polish press and are absent in the Ukrainian media at all, namely, the symbol-product “blood”, the symbol-concept “solidarity”, the symbol-concept “freedom”.
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy porównawczej reprezentacji symbolicznych Majdanu w prasie ukraińskiej oraz polskiej, w tym reprezentacji obecnych zarówno w tabloidach, jak i w tygodnikach opinii. Przedmiotem badania stały się różne typy symboli (tj. symbole-produkty, symbole-koncepty, symbole-slogany, symbole-sytuacje, symbole-procesy, działania symboliczne), wyodrębnione w oparciu o filozofię form symbolicznych Ernsta Cassirera oraz teorię symboli Susanne Langer, identyfikowane w reportażach i artykułach publicystycznych poświęconych wydarzeniom, jakie miały miejsce na Majdanie Niezależności w Kijowie w czasie Rewolucji Godności. Dzięki analizie zawartości tych tekstów udało się ustalić, że najbardziej widoczne symbole są, i w prasie ukraińskiej, i w prasie polskiej, podobne. Wśród nich należy wymienić: „barykadę” (symbol-koncept), „Berkut” (symbol-koncept), „rozpędzenie Majdanu” (symbol-proces). Ponadto w prasie polskiej dostrzeżono symbole, jak też idee i pojęcia je wyrażające, nieobecne w prasie ukraińskiej, w tym: „krew”, „solidarność” i „wolność”.

Opis:: Celem badań przedstawionych w niniejszym artykule była analiza tekstów związanych z tematyką koronawirusa opublikowanych przez „Gazetę Wyborczą”, tj. polską gazetę opiniotwórczą. Zastosowano metodologię językoznawstwa korpusowego, która pozwala przeprowadzić analizę ilościową dużych zbiorów danych (korpusów językowych). Metodologia ta jest używana w językoznawstwie, jednak – jak pokazuje niniejsza analiza – można ją z powodzeniem zastosować do badań ilościowych dyskursu prasowego i politycznego. Dane analizowane były automatycznie przez programy komputerowe opracowane dla języka polskiego (Korpusomat) oraz przez narzędzia dostępne w systemie Sketch Engine, które pozwalają analizować dane w języku angielskim. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że w publikacjach prasowych w marcu i kwietniu koncentrowano się głównie na opisie wirusa i konsekwencjach zakażenia (hospitalizacja), natomiast artykuły publikowane między majem a lipcem zawierają informacje o potencjalnych szczepionkach i – w przeciwieństwie do faktów – podkreślają malejący trend zachorowań.
The aim of the study presented in this paper was to analyse how the topic of coronavirus was described by the Polish quality newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza” in the period between the 1st of March and the 12th of July 2020, i.e. the day of presidential elections in Poland. The methodology used in the investigation follows a corpus-assisted analysis, which allows one to conduct a quantitative study of large collections of data (language corpora). The methodology is typically used in linguistics, yet the study shows that it can be successfully employed in a quantitative analysis of press and political discourse. The data were analysed automatically by computer software dedicated to Polish language (Korpusomat) and by tools available in the Sketch Engine system that allow one to examine English language data. The study demonstrates that the theme of coronavirus presented in March and April focused largely on the description of the virus and the consequences of being infected (hospitalization), whilst the articles published between May and July contain more information about possible vaccines and, contrary to facts, they emphasise a declining trend in morbidity rates.

Opis:: Lnianka siewna (Camelina sativa L.) jest drobnoziarnistą rośliną oleistą. Mała średnica jej nasion, stanowi duże utrudnienie przy wytłaczaniu z nich oleju najczęściej spotykanymi prasami ślimakowymi. Wychodząc naprzeciw temu problemowi Przemysłowy Instytut Maszyn Rolniczych w Poznaniu we współpracy z Uniwersytetem Przyrodniczym w Poznaniu, opracował konstrukcję zestawu urządzeń przeznaczonych do wytłaczania oleju z nasion lnianki siewnej i innych oleistych roślin drobnoziarnistych. W pracy przedstawiono porównawcze wyniki badań procesu wytłaczania i jakości oleju oraz wytłoków z nasion lnianki siewnej.
Camelina sativa is a fine-grained oil plant. The small diameter of the seeds causes real troubles with oil extrusion by most often met screw presses. To get off this problem, the Industrial Institute of Agricultural Engineering in Poznań in cooperation with the Poznań University of Life Sciences worked out the construction of the set of devices designed for the optimum oil embossing from Camelina seeds and other fine-grained oil plants. The paper presents comparative results of the extrusion process and quality of camelina seed oil and marc.

Opis:: Newspapers and journalism are experiencing a serious crisis, primarily economic, but also a crisis of their social role and credibility. It is visible in the decline in expenditure and revenue, including advertising, in the decreasing number of journalists and loss of public confidence. This pushes the further tabloidization of journalism, by which I mean using all means, themes, and forms that could attract readers. The result is a simplification of the content, a neglect of journalistic ethics, and - worst of all - numerous errors, from spelling mistakes to false information. This further decreases the credibility of the press. To brake this vicious circle a renewed appreciation of the importance of confidence in journalism is needed. This article describes the Total Quality Management project which was prepared by The Media and Society Foundation.
