Opis:
To establish the need for individual monitoring of air crew, exposure of air-crew members of Polish airlines LOT to cosmic radiation has been determined and several dosimetry methods tested in flight. Passive radiation dosimetry (using thermoluminescent LiF and chemically etched CR-39 track detectors) was supported by calculations with the CARI computer code. We found that the air crew of most of the LOT aircraft studied (with the exception of those flying ATR propeller aircraft) may somewhat exceed or, in certain conditions (depending on solar activity), may considerably exceed the effective dose level of 1 mSv per year. For crew members flying regularly on B-767 aircraft, the estimated yearly effective dose ranged between 2 mSv and 5 mSv, depending mainly on flying frequency and solar activity. During periods of enhanced intensity of cosmic radiation (i.e. during minimum solar activity) the effective doses could be close to the level of 6 mSv per year.

The aim of the study was to characterize latitudinal changes in the radiative microclimate of small forest openings (artificial gaps) under Polish conditions. The global, direct and diffuse radiation on the forest floor in gaps was modelled using the Solar Radiation tool in ArcGiS 10.2 Esri. The gaps were modelled as holes of elliptical shape (60 m x 40 m diameters) in flat terrain and with a depth of 20 to 30 meters to mimic the height of a surrounding tree stand. The range of global radiation diversity on an open and flat surface predicted by our model was comparable with findings of empirical studies. Theoretically, the investigated gaps in the northern-most part of Poland receive only 82% of global solar radiation, 74% direct and 90% of diffuse radiation compared to gaps in the most southern part of the country. The comparison with empirical data indicates that local values of the transmittance parameter of the atmosphere may have a large influence on the actual values of solar radiation and may partially mask the latitudinal impact. Nevertheless, the model constitutes a valuable tool for characterising solar radiation diversity in a gap and supports silvicultural decision-making.

Opis:
Objectives The aim of the study was a survey-based assessment concerning parents of children undergoing CT examinations and their knowledge of detailed information about procedures involved in imaging diagnostics. Material and Methods A statistical analysis of 108 surveys of parents of children undergoing CT studies in the Department of Pediatric Radiology in Poznań, Poland was done, with the use of Statistica software. Results In result of the evaluation of all subsections of the substantive question number, the majority of answers were incorrect (68–98%). No correlation between the number of CT examinations conducted for a child and the number of correct answers to substantive questions was observed. No correlation between the number of CT examinations conducted for a child and the fact of noting the examination with the use of ionizing radiation down in a child’s health certificate was stated. The statistical analysis showed that children of parents who declared that the aim of the CT examination had been explained to them better underwent more of them. Conclusions Parents are poorly informed about a radiation dose and risk related to a CT examination procedure. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(1):65–73

Opis:
Background: The common access to imaging methods based on ionizing radiation requires also radiation protection. The knowledge of ionizing radiation exposure risks among the medical staff is essential for planning diagnostic procedures and therapy. Evaluation of the knowledge of radiation safety during diagnostic procedures among the medical staff. Material and Methods: The study consisted of a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire consisted of seven closed-ended questions concerning the knowledge of the effects of exposure to ionizing radiation as well as questions related to responder's profession and work experience. The study group included a total of 150 individuals from four professional groups: nurses, doctors, medical technicians, support staff. The study was carried out in the three largest hospitals in Gdańsk between July and October 2013. Results: The highest rates of correct answers to questions related to the issue of radiation protection were provided by the staff of radiology facilities and emergency departments with 1-5 years of professional experience. The most vulnerable group in terms of the knowledge of these issues consisted of individuals working at surgical wards with 11-15 years of professional experience. Conclusions: Education in the field of radiological protection should be a subject of periodic training of medical personnel regardless of position and length of service.

With the discovering atomic nucleus, nuclear science started to be used in different fields and researcher focused on radiation protection as it is dangerous for human cell. Thus radiation physics and materials development becomes one of the important subject in science for this purposes. The developed material should be used for radiation shielding. In this work gamma ray shielding properties of some composite materials produced by polymer have been investigated.

Opis:
The mutual radiation grafting of acrylic acid (AAc) onto polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) films was performed. At first stage of investigations, the influence of ionizing radiation on the trunk polymers was studied, i.e. the level of radicals stable at room temperature and radiation yield of evolved hydrogen were estimated for each polymer. The measurements were carried out using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC), respectively. Radiation yields of radicals as well as hydrogen emission increased in the following order PS < PP < PE. Under comparable conditions, the same relationship was found for the yield of radiation-induced grafting of AAc. A distinct correlation between content of radicals generated by ionizing radiation in polymeric matrices and grafting degree was confirmed for the studied materials. The effect of monomer and inhibitor concentrations on the efficiency of processes were studied as well.

Opis:
After the major accidents in “Chernobyl” NPP, located on the territory of present-day Ukraine, and then in the USSR in April 1986, in Bulgaria, as well as in most European countries a lack of systems for a continuous measurement of gamma radiation was reported, which have to provide reliable real-time information on radiation status. Consequently, in the European Union, construction of automated systems for continuous monitoring of gamma radiation has begun. Observations on the state of the radiation background in Bulgaria are carried out in parallel in two ways. A serious problem can cause people to cross a state border in random unregulated places and not at a checkpoint.

Opis:
DNA is the universal primary target for ionizing radiation; however, the cellular response is highly diversified not only by differential DNA repair ability. The monitoring system for the ionizing radiation-inflicted DNA damage consists of 3 apparently independently acting enzymes which are activated by DNA breaks: two protein kinases, Atm (ataxia telangiectasia mutated) and DNA-PK (DNA-dependent protein kinase) and a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, PARP-1. These 3 enzymes are the source of alarm signals, which affect to various extents DNA repair, progression through the cell cycle and eventually the pathway to cell death. Their functions probably are partly over-lapping. On the side of DNA repair their role consists in recruiting and/or activating the repair enzymes, as well as preventing illegitimate recombination of the damaged sites. A large part of the nuclear signalling pathway, including the integrating role of Tp53 has been revealed. Two main signalling pathways start at the plasma membrane: the MAPK/ERK (mitogen and extracellular signal regulated protein kinase family) "survival pathway" and the SAPK/JNK (stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun N-terminal kinase) "cell death pathway". The balance between them is likely to determine the cell’s fate. When DNA break rejoining is impaired, the cell is unconditionally radiation sensitive. The fate of a repair-competent cell is determined by the time factor: the cell cycle arrest should be long enough to ensure the completion of repair. Incomplete repair or misrepair may be tolerated, when generation of the death signal is prevented. So, the character and timing of the signals are, to a large part, responsible for the cellular intrinsic radiation sensitivity and depend on the characteristics of the cellular signalling web.
