Opis:: How did Tertullian regard the apostles? This article investigates the references to them scattered through his writings both as individuals and as a collective. It reveals that individually the apostles were remote figures who appear in the pages of the New Testament simply as interlocutors of Jesus. Even Peter, significant as he was, was someone whose role was personal to himself and not a pattern for future leadership. Yet collectively the apostles performed an important function in Tertullian’s ecclesiology; they were the first receivers and transmitters of the regula fidei, and their fidelity to that responsibility distinguished authentic Christian communities from heretical associations. The regula fidei was important to Tertullian. As a synthesis of the essentials of faith as preached and lived by Jesus, it provided the measure against which passages of Scripture and Christian belief and practice were to be interpreted. The regula relied upon the accurate and complete transmission of the message of Jesus via the apostles to the church and its leaders. The apostolicity of the church is at the heart of why Tradition is central to Christian theology.

Opis:: The article is a voice in the discussion on the doctrine of Scripture, that is, the theological reflection on the nature, attributes and mission of Scripture. The text shows the close link between the regula fidei and Scripture and, at the same time, the impossibility of identifying the rule of faith with the biblical canon. The rule of faith has played a role in establishing the Christian canon and throughout the Church’s time serves to protect the message of Scripture. The content expressed in the rule of faith is not derived from hidden Tradition, and Tradition has become the internal principle of the New Testament and the regula fidei. The key to Scripture is the faith of the Church, one expression of which is the rule of faith. It allows us to grasp the order of the truths of faith (harmonia veritatum) and their hierarchy (hierarchia veritatum). The original rule of faith was born out of the reception of divine revelation and, together with Scripture, remains at the service of the New Covenant.
Artykuł jest głosem w dyskusji na temat doktryny Pisma Świętego, czyli teologicznej refleksji nad naturą, atrybutami i misją Pisma Świętego. W tekście ukazano bliski związek regula fidei z Pismem Świętym, a zarazem niemożliwość utożsamienia reguły wiary z kanonem biblijnym. Reguła wiary odegrała rolę w ustaleniu chrześcijańskiego kanonu i w całym czasie Kościoła służy ochronie przesłania Pisma Świętego. Treści wyrażone w regule wiary nie pochodzą z ukrytej Tradycji, zaś Tradycja stała się wewnętrzną zasadą Nowego Testamentu i regula fidei. Kluczem do Pisma Świętego jest wiara Kościoła, której jednym z wyrazów jest reguła wiary. Pozwala ona uchwycić porządek prawd wiary (harmonia veritatum) oraz ich hierarchię (hierarchia veritatum). Pierwotna reguła wiary zrodziła się w wyniku recepcji objawienia Bożego i razem z Pismem Świętym pozostaje na służbie Nowego Przymierza.

Opis:: During the second and third centuries A.D., challenges from various gnostic groups forced mainstream Christianity to deepen its understanding of its core message. Partially reacting to gnostic teachings, Irenaeus of Lyon, Clement of Alexandria, and Origen all contributed to establishing the methods and contents of the authentic “gnosis,” i.e., the orthodox doctrine of faith, in its relationship to historical knowledge and its moral and spiritual endeavor. The importance given to the regula fidei as criterium veritatis manifests the fundamental desire to be faithful to the original experience of Jesus Christ.
W II i III wieku n.e. wyzwanie, jakim była działalność różnych grup gnostyckich, skłoniło przedstawicieli głównego nurtu chrześcijaństwa do pogłębienia rozumienia swojego najważniejszego przesłania. Po części w reakcji na nauczanie gnostyków Ireneusz z Lyonu, Klemens Aleksandryjski oraz Orygenes przyczynili się do opracowania metod i treści prawdziwej „gnozy”, czyli ortodoksyjnej doktryny wiary, w jej relacji do wiedzy historycznej, a także wysiłków moralnych i duchowych. Znaczenie nadawane regula fidei jako criterium veritatis świadczy o fundamentalnym pragnieniu pozostania wiernym pierwotnemu doświadczeniu obecności Jezusa Chrystusa.

The article presents the views of the author of the monograph The Doctrine of Scripture on the issue of the Reformation principle sola Scriptura. Brad East criticises the Protestant axiom from what he calls a catholic perspective. He wants to take as broada view as possible, taking into account patristic and medieval thought and the theology of many Christian denominations, including the Roman Catholic one. Among the many arguments against the “Scripture alone” principle, the following ones have been pointedout: the impossibility of establishing the canon on the basis of Scripture alone, the formal insufficiency of Scripture, its perspicuity only in the Church, the silence of inspired books on matters requiring answers, the distinction between the word of God and Scripture, and the limited authority of the Holy Bible. The conclusions of the assistant professor of theology in the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University help as well to justify the Catholic belief in the necessary connection of Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church.
