Opis:

Opis:
The article presents a characteristics of several contemporary communication phenomena transforming religious discourse in its Catholic version. The author understands discourse as the entirety of communication practices specific to a particular community of believers, which in the course of various interactions fixes and agrees relevant to this community content, preserves appropriate scenarios of communication behavior and rules for their completion by utterances and/or non-verbal means. The author emphasizes the peculiarity of the religious discourse that is open to transcendence. She limits the scope of the presented communication phenomena to the catechetical discourse, which now focuses on participation of the catechized people in the process of catechesis. The methods of catechesis should therefore take into account the spiritual needs of the believers. Catechesis formulated in this mode promotes communication experiments, especially the processes of movement, i.e. translocation of speech genres from the secular to sacred realm. According to the author these translocations are accomplished in new genre forms that maintain the memory of their basic genre code, but at the same time are subject to processes of transformation conducive to the creation of new genre patterns. Some of them do not have genre identifiers in the form of special names and are only a beginning of new conventions. Such status is attributed by the author to evangelization visiting card analyzed in the article. Some of them gain names and create a series that preserves the innovative principles of the genre. As an example, the author discusses messages called the heaventels. They are an adaptation of the SMS convention for simulated (stylized) communication of God as the sender to the man. Translocations are favourable to launching of the adaptation processes and formation of genre duplicates that make the input (secular) genre form more capacious and communicatively catchy.

Opis:
The article is devoted to sublimity as one of the rule shaping religious discourse (especially in Christian religious tradition). In the first part the author presents three ways of understanding of the term sublime/sublimity, which have developed during historical reflection on this category: sublimity as a grand style (one of the three rhetoric styles); as a grand (high) speech (Pseudo-Longinus); as an ambivalent experience of dread and fascination (Rudolf Otto), that arouses in the believer feelings of numinous. The second part examines the lexis (vocabulary) as a mean to achieve sublimity in religious texts. The author points out however, that the effect of sublimity is achieved not only by means of lexis, hence further research is needed.

Opis:
The main object of this article is to study the role of terminology within the French epistemology called Discourse Analysis. The author examines the nature of the religious discourse and focuses on its specific denotations. She studies the pope’s message (of Benedict XVI) for 2011 World Day of the Sick to show how the French theory enhances the value of the self-constituting discourse in signs interpretation. Such a vision allows to understand interdependence between discourse and its specific meanings.

Opis:
Gender as a category of cultural gender and gender identity appears not only in scientific discourse as a topic of research, but also in public discourse, as a subject of various debates and disputes. This concept was also included into the discourse of the Catholic Church. Its creators – church leaders – embarked upon a public reinterpretation of the concept of gender, thus inserting their point of view into the broader political and ideological dispute. The aim of this paper is to review the postulates of the church concerning gender in the Pastoral Letter on the Feast of the Holy Family, which seems to be a leading programme paper concerning this issue. In this paper, gender as a research and scientific category is isolated from the scientific discourse and appropriatedby the educational discourse of the church, where it functions as a scare tactic. Structural modifications in the text and style of the letter, stylistic and rhetorical tricks, as well as pragmatic mechanisms, make the text of the pastoral letter a persuasive political argument.

Religious vocabulary in an experimental network of lexical links, fifty years ago and today
Autorzy:
Gatkowska, Izabela
Wydawca:
Wydawnictwo Wyższej Szkoły Filologicznej
Opis:
There is no lack of academic works dedicated to religious vocabulary; however, there has never been an analysis of religious vocabulary in the empirical network of lexical links. An analyzed network arose as the result of an experiment taking advantage of a mechanism of verbal associations that was conducted cyclically on a group of 900 university students of Jagiellonian University (UJ) and of the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy (AGH) in Kraków, Poland. Religious vocabulary is the basis for an empirical subnet of a network of lexical associations. We also used words from the Kent-Rosanoff list as an incentive, as these words were used in an earlier test by Ida Kurcz. This list allowed us to compare the lexical links for such words as "Bible", "religion" and "priest" as used by 1000 people in the test conducted in 1964/1965 (Kurcz 1967) with our results obtained in 2011-2014. This comparison shows a stability of meaning obtained over the course of the past 50 years. At the same time, a comparison of the research results showed the appearance of various stereotypes and conviction systems linked with the referent of the words being researched.

Opis:
The article presents a formal scheme of the analogy of proportionality formulated by Józef Maria Bocheński. Bocheński applies his theory to religious discourse in order to claim that the meaning of this discourse does not have to be established exclusively in a negative way, in opposition to the claims made by negative theology. The aim of this article is to show that the application of analogy to religious discourse does not work. Bocheński’s theory is criticized in three aspects.Firstly, by adopting the assumptions of the theory of analogy, one can easily prove that some relations considered within religious discourse are indistinguishable, thus leading to confusion. Secondly, analogy as utilized by Bocheński takes only the formal properties of relations into account, making religious discourse almost materially empty. Thirdly, any attempt to treat analogy as an isomorphism of relations results in difficulties with defining the domains of these relations. The conclusion emphasizes one more fact: the analogy of proportionality offered by Bocheński and applied to religious discourse is simply impractical and useless since nobody uses it.

Opis:
The paper discusses the strategy of translation of Marcin Czechowic’s New Testament translation (1577). The authoress applies the theoretical categories of so called global translation strategy such as scopos, the potential reader, religious attitude as Czechowic’s New Testament was devoted to the unitarian communities. It was arranged as a multifunctional book for religious formation which contained institutionalized transmission of God’s Word. Denominational assumptions are manifested in the selection of translation strategy, style, and method of organizing the text in the book. Both the choice of the specific method of translation and the linguistic form of translations such as Iōannēs Baptistēs – Jan Ponurzyciel were marked by denominational optics of interpretation. The development of humanism broadened the general cognitive horizon. Czechowic’s translation was based on humanistic Greek editions of the time. It is not without reason that we find translators’ assurances as to the method of translation on title pages and in introductions, which were expressed by the concept of “diligence” (Lat. diligentia, Pol. pilność), as well as assurances with regard to the translator’s relationship with the source text – faithfulness to the Greek and Hebrew (veritas graeca, hebraica), or following of an “approved” text (Lat. textus probatus, Old Pol. doświadszony) or “contribution” by confronting different records. Marcin Czechowic, like most Protestant translators, declared faithfulness to the Greek source, however his translation of the Holy Scripture ware also in line with the postulate of veritas confessionis, which was interpreted in various ways depending on doctrinal foundations.
