Opis:
The format of mental representation is the way information is organized in the mind. The discussion surrounding the format of representation addresses the problem of what representational primitives are and the rules of information processing. In philosophy, the discussion is dominated by the distinction between analog and digital representational systems. It is thought that this distinction can bring us closer to an understanding of the nature of perceptual and discursive representations. I argue that the analog-digital distinction cannot meet that expectation. The analog-digital distinction is neither sufficient nor necessary to explain the distinction between perceptual and discursive representations (and perception and thinking, respectively). I propose an alternative interpretation of the concept of representational format which provides us a better understanding of the difference between iconic and discursive representations. I explain the differences between formats of representations in terms of differences in information processing. I demonstrate, how this alternative interpretation of the concept of the representational format can explain the constraints put on the contents of representational systems.

Opis:
Since early 2000s, various modal ensembles (verbo-gestural utterances, feature films, animations, political cartoons, printed advertisements, television commercials, comics, picture books, computer games, pieces of music, corporate trademarks and logos, medieval textiles, etc.; cf. Forceville and Urios-Aparisi 2009; Pinar Sanz 2015) have been the subject of scholarly exploration in multimodal cognitive linguistics — a burgeoning research field situated at the intersection of multimodality studies and cognitive linguistics — with a view to explicating how general cognitive mechanisms shape meanings communicated across modalities and providing additional evidence for the psychological reality of various theoretical and descriptive notions put forward by cognitive linguists. Given the goals of multimodal cognitive linguistics, it is not surprising that research in this field has not only highlighted certain characteristics of the analyzed modal ensembles, but has also de-emphasized or altogether hidden others. In this article, an attempt is made to examine a number of contributions to the strand of multimodal cognitive linguistics that focuses on the cognitive underpinnings of various static planar ensembles (printed advertisements, cartoons, comics, corporate logos, etc.) with regard to what these contributions tacitly assume to be included in the scope of the pictorial and the verbal — two key concepts of multimodal cognitive linguistics that have never been explicitly characterized by researchers in this strand. This attempt is undertaken in order to demonstrate that in the examined contributions the two concepts are implicitly made to subsume representations that are qualitatively so different that there is little reason for bundling them together, which is in turn intended to alert researchers and readers alike to the problems caused by the imposition of a binary construal (‘either verbal or pictorial’) onto a continuum of qualitatively diverse static planar signs. This article further shows that an alternative characterization of this semiotic continuum — one that is free of the problems engendered by construing the continuum in binary terms — has for a long time existed in the field of comics scholarship. In conclusion, it is suggested that a more interdisciplinary approach may help multimodal cognitive linguists avoid unwarranted oversimplifications in the future.

Problem krótkowzroczności strategicznej
The strategic myopia problem
Autorzy:
Czakon, Wojciech
Opis:
The paper explains the strategic myopia concept, grounded in managers' cognitive assumption. The concept is rooted in marketing myopia. The learning myopia concept captured three dimensions restraining the efficiency of learning in organizations. Selective perception, narrow options and resulting actions describe the broadest concept of managerial myopia. This paper proposes a view of strategic myopia as an imperfect environment perceptions: competitive and network, referring to two established generic categorizations of the firm's strategic environment.

Opis:
The presented research concerns 11-year-old Greek students’ mental representations of the mechanisms of vision in conditions of natural and artificial light, as well as the persistence of those representations in terms of the two different states of lighting and the expression form of the provided answers (oral speech; sketches). The study consisted of two phases: test interviews and an interview process, where personal interviews were conducted with 30 participants. The results showed that the 11-year-old pupils employed the majority of the vision schemes that are included in the international bibliography; however, they tended to use the Sea of Light mechanism and a new scheme the researchers called Illumination of the Object. The schemes employed, however, are not consistent, either throughout the different states of lighting, or in the 3-D and 2-D world.

Opis:
Many travelers-writers have described the characteristics of the areas visited from a critical point of view, with wit and sense of observation. One of the most significant and unknown works concerning this literary current is the tale of the trip from Paestum to Policastro made in 1828 by C.T. Ramage: his sketchbooks are not only a description of the evidence of the past and of the archaeological remains of the Ancient Greece, but a small geo-history of the Cilento (shortly before its insurrection of that same year), as the first stage of a journey that returns a fresco of the South of Italy as it was before the process of Italian unification, respect to its agricultural landscapes, customs and dietary habits, attitudes, superstitions, society, culture, religious and political afairs, comparable with the present context of the same territories.

Opis:
While political scientists and communication scholars have long been interested in the relationship between democracy, media and public opinion, still too little attention has been focused on how these concepts and institutions are perceived by different actors functioning in the public sphere. This paper argues that the kind of idea of public opinion persists in society depends on the model of democracy adopted by various public actors, the historical context of the idea and the agendas measuring public opinion. Based on in-depth (n = 32) and focused group (n = 36) interviews this study shows that the way people look at different theoretical concepts depends not only on their different representations but also on the roles they play in the public sphere. Representations of public opinion expressed by lay people, politicians and journalists seem to be mutually exclusive. The paper explores the way Polish democracy persists despite these controversies.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to identify social representations of inclusive school from the point of view of Slovak education actors. Q-methodology (Stephenson, 1953) was used for the purpose of mapping. A set of 57 items was compiled, representatively representing associations with the meaning “inclusive school”. The items were sorted by 32 participants aged from 25 to 58. Five significant factors were identified, which represented various inclusive school representations linked to: 1) tradition of integration, 2) institutional processes of education quality assurance, 3) priority in declaration of pro-inclusive setting, 4) community co-existence, and 5) needs of a modern society. Preliminary interpretation of the representations from the viewpoint of participants’ additional characteristics is described in the discussion.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to examine the perception of diabetes and the knowledge about this disease. Participants were divided into two groups: the first one consisted of family members of diabetic patients (56 individuals; M age = 54) whereas the second one comprised those who had no family experiences with diabetes (104 individuals; M age = 55). In order to examine the perception of diabetes modified version of IPQ-R (The Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire), enabling examination of healthy individuals was applied. Additionally, participants were to decide whether certain given information on diabetes was true or false. Participants in both groups considered diabetes as a serious chronic disease which can be successfully treated and the course of which is largely dependent on a patient’s behaviour. In both groups there were false assumptions regarding the causes of the disease and opinions discordant with medical knowledge. It would be advisable to organize educational campaigns and screening programmes for the family members. As a result, family members would be able to provide better support for the patient and could also recognize dysfunctions of their own organism early enough.
