Opis:: The aim of this article is to highlight the positive role that Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Walter Benjamin attribute to retranslation in their essays. Despite some differences in their way of understanding poetry, both authors claim that retranslating helps us recognize the “life” and the transformation of a poetical work behind its apparent fixity. Thus, according to them, the process of (re)translation sheds light on the way the meaning of a work unfolds.
Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu wskazanie pozytywnej roli, którą Hugo von Hofmannstahl i Walter Benjamin przypisują retranslacji w swoich esejach. Pomimo różnic w ich rozumieniu poezji, obaj twierdzą, że retranslacja pomaga w rozpoznaniu “życia” i transformacji poetyckiego dzieła, ukrytego za jego pozorną stałością. Zatem według nich, proces (re)translacji rzuca światło na sposób, w którym objawia się znaczenie dzieła.

Opis:: Characters with split personalities in Nessuno torna indietro by Alba de Céspedes and the German-Polish history of the novel – This paper focuses on the Polish reception of Nessuno torna indietro, a novel by Alba de Céspedes. In Italy the novel was a bestseller between 1938 and the eighties, however it was impossible to publish it in Poland due to the fact that negotiations failed. Nevertheless, the book was translated into Polish on the basis of the German version and published in a newspaper in 1947. The presentation of the Polish history of this novel will be based on archival materials.

Opis:: This article is a review of Jolanta Wawrzycka and Erika Mihálycsa’s edited volume Retranslating Joyce for the 21st Century (European Joyce Studies 30, Brill/ Rodopi, 2021). It discusses a number of core issues raised in the book, starting from the observation that 21st century translations of Joyce’s work are by necessity retranslations, and that this necessarily makes them qualitatively different from first translations. The chapters discuss many features of retranslation in the context of Ulysses in particular, ranging from the notion of retranslation hypothesis and comparisons between versions to issues of dealing with many voices and the creativity this requires; the necessity of contextualising the different versions; and the roles of the retranslator, reviser and editor. The review also makes some suggestions for future research on retranslating Joyce.

Opis:: The two versions of Flaubert’s Un cœur simple, both signed by writer and translator Lalla Romano, prompt a reflection on a practice which lies in the hybrid space between revision and retranslation. Mainly due to extratextual reasons, two often conflicting dynamics emerge from Romano’s interventions in the text and in the paratexts: the tendency to get closer to the source text and, at the same time, the translator’s unusual independence from its stylistic features.
Dwie wersje Un coeur simple Flauberta zrealizowane przez pisarkę i tłumaczkę Lallę Romano skłaniają do refleksji nad praktyką znajdującą się na pograniczu pomiędzy rewizją a retranslacją. Głównie ze względu na pozatekstowe przyczyny, z interwencji Romano w tekst i w parateksty wyłaniają się dwie dynamiki zwykle ze sobą sprzeczne: tendencja przybliżania tekstu docelowego do tekstu źródłowego i nietypowa niezależność tłumacza w stosunku do stylistycznych cech tekstu.

Opis:: This paper sets to analyse the hermeneutical process of highlighting at work in the preface written by the North Irish poet Seamus Heaney to his retranslations of Beowulf (1999). My analysis takes into account the generic identity of the preface by considering it as a textual subgenre where the translator becomes a metatranslator to voice herself out of invisibility, engages in a (self-reflexive) hermeneutical analysis and “justification” by commenting on the choice of the translated work and their translation choices. The analysis is carried out with the help of two concepts elaborated by Gadamer: situatedness and self-understanding to show how Seamus Heaney fuses different horizons in the process of his retranslation.

Tytuł:: The online afterlife of a Polish modernist classic : John Curran Davis’s fan translation of the fiction of Bruno Schulz

Opis:: The paper discusses John Curran Davis’s English retranslation of the works of Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), a highly acclaimed Polish-Jewish author of short stories. Available to all Internet users at schulzian.net, a website managed by Davis, the translation is a fully independent, bottom-up initiative of the British fan of Schulz. Not only was Davis working without commission or institutional patronage but by sharing his translations online around 2005-2006, he actually infringed the copyright, which protected Schulz’s work until the end of 2012. Focusing on contextual factors rather than textual properties of Davis’s version, this paper discusses the theoretical and practical implications of its dubious legal status, as well as its positioning with respect to divisions between elite and popular culture, academic readership and online communities, and institutionalised and unofficial circulation systems of literature. It is argued that Davis’s translation project stands out not only from traditional practices from before the digital age, but also varies from the most typical, collaborative forms of fan, crowdsourced, or participatory translation.

Opis:: Artykuł poświęcony jest praktyce retranslacji w odniesieniu do polskich przekładów dramatów Williama Shakespeare’a w XX i XXI wieku. Jego celem jest: 1) próba zdefiniowania retranslacji w warunkach wielowiekowej recepcji dramatów z kanonu europejskiego, charakteryzujących się intensywną recepcją teatralną i krytyczną; 2) przegląd polskich zasobów tłumaczeń Shakespeare’a w XX i XXI wieku, z uwzględnieniem strategii (re)translacji oraz specyfiki promocji/upowszechniania retranslacji w docelowej przestrzeni kulturowej; 3) refleksja nad współistnieniem przekładów Shakespeare’a w warunkach rozproszonego mecenatu, z rosnącym znaczeniem zasobów cyfrowych. W szczególny sposób rozpatrywana jest kwestia wyodrębnienia się praktyki retranslacji w warunkach pełnej asymilacji dramaturgii Shakespeare’a w polskiej kulturze literackiej i teatralnej, uzależnienie dynamiki retranslacji od uwarunkowań teatralnych i ideologicznych, a także powiązań retranslacji dramatu z twórczością własną tłumaczy. Konkluzję artykułu stanowią uwagi o wpływie zasobów cyfrowych na wyznaczniki kanoniczności przekładów, a także o potencjalnym schyłku logocentrycznych doktryn przekładowych.
This article deals with retranslation practice on the example of Polish Shakespeare translations in the 20th and 21st century. The aim of the article is (1) to define retranslation in the context of centuries-long, intense critical and theatrical reception of European canonical drama, (2) to discuss the profile of Polish Shakespeare translations in the 20th and 21st century, particularly with regards to (re) translation strategies and modes of promotion/dissemination of translations in the target culture, (3) to account for the co-existence of numerous retranslations given the strong diversification of patronage and the growing importance of digital resources. Special attention is given to the specificity of retranslation practice when Shakespeare’s plays are fully assimilated into Polish literary and theatrical culture, the retranslation dynamics depends on theatrical and ideological factors, and translators combine retranslation with their own literary agendas. The article concludes with a discussion of the impact of digital resources on translation canonicity and possible decline of logocentric drama translation theories.

Opis:: Drawing on the results of research into the scale and distribution of Polish translation activity with regard to the Shakespeare an canon in the 19th century, the article discusses the various roles assumed by both professional and informal editors working with Shakespeare translators over time. Understandably enough, the editorial efforts serve to ensure the quality and reception of the text, and range from publisher’s pressure and copyediting to aesthetic (or societal) patronage and complementary efforts to append the text with critical commentary. The article juxtaposes the intimacy of the translation process with the inherently intrusive role of an editor, foregrounding the fragile psychological balance which preconditions effective collaboration and longterm commitment. Finally, the article discusses the need for editorial policies attuned to Shakespeare in translation, which would take into account both the literary intricacy of the original(s) and the specificity of retranslation dialectics, with the necessary positioning of new rewritings against past canon(s).

Opis:: The article shows the history of the Spanish and American editions of the novel Dalla parte di lei by the Italian-Cuban author Alba de Céspedes and the process of its retranslations starting from the several English versions of the text used as “text-pivot”. Through the investigation of the author’s intense correspondence with her publishers and taking into account Berman’s “Retranslation hypothesis” and Venuti’s approach within the Translation Studies, this work demonstrates how, in the 1950s, one of the most popular Alba de Céspedes’ novel used to be translated in other languages through different editing, revision and retranslation practices depending on the public of readers. In particular, Francoism censorship was decisive in editorial choices for the Spanish edition of the text.
Artykuł przedstawia historię hiszpańskiego i amerykańskiego wydania powieści Dalla parte di lei włosko-kubańskiej autorki Alby de Céspedes oraz proces jej retranslacji, poczynając od różnych wersji anglojęzycznych stosowanych jako “tekst-pivot”. Analizując korespondencję autorki z jej wydawcami i nawiązując do “hipotezy retranslacji” Bermana oraz podejście Venutiego w obrębie przekładoznawstwa, niniejszy artykuł dowodzi o tym, jak w latach 50. jedna z najpopularniejszych powieści Alby de Céspedes była tłumaczona na inne języki za pomocą różnych procesów edycji, rewizji i retranslacji w zależności od jej odbiorców. Zwłaszcza frankistowska cenzura odgrywała decydującą rolę w procesie wydawniczym hiszpańskiego wydania tekstu.
