Opis:: This paper investigates the mean reversion in household consumption expenditure in 38 African countries; the expenditure series used were the percentage of nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP), each spanning 1990 to 2018. Due to a small sample size of time series of household expenditure, with possible structural breaks, we used the Fourier unit root test approach, which enabled us to model both smooth and instantaneous breaks in the expenditure series. The results showed non-mean reversion in the consumption expenditure pattern of Egypt, Madagascar and Tunisia, while mean reversion was detected in the remaining 35 countries. Thus, the majority of African countries are on the verge of recession once shocks that affect the growth of GDP are triggered. Findings in this paper are of relevance to policymakers on poverty alleviation programmes in those selected countries.

Opis:: In this essay I present culture as a realm constituted by a circular movement where progress is constantly confronted (and questioned) by different forms of reversions. By progress I mean specifically oriented changes we observe in culture. Many of them are rooted in the development of technology and science, or stem from demographical changes and intercultural influences. Reactions to these changes frequently involve returning to certain forms of behavior or responses that were common in the past but have been later abandoned. I intend to present examples of this phenomenon observed in culture.

Opis:: The Escherichia coli AlkB protein encoded by alkB gene was recently found to repair cytotoxic DNA lesions 1-methyladenine (1-meA) and 3-methylcytosine (3-meC) by using a novel iron-catalysed oxidative demethylation mechanism that protects the cell from the toxic effects of methylating agents. Mutation in alkB results in increased sensitivity to MMS and elevated level of MMS-induced mutations. The aim of this study was to analyse the mutational specificity of alkB117 in a system developed by J.H. Miller involving two sets of E. coli lacZ mutants, CC101-106 allowing the identification of base pair substitutions, and CC107-CC111 indicating frameshift mutations. Of the six possible base substitutions, the presence of alkB117 allele led to an increased level of GC→AT transitions and GC→TA and AT→TA transversions. After MMS treatment the level of GC→AT transitions increased the most, 22-fold. Among frameshift mutations, the most numerous were -2CG, -1G, and -1A deletions and +1G insertion. MMS treatment appreciably increased all of the above types of frameshifts, with additional appearance of the +1A insertion.

Opis:: Equity release services are becoming increasingly popular nowadays. They are a remedy for the financial problems of seniors who do not have enough money to support themselves and cannot count on family support. In practice, these services are provided under a sales model and the entrepreneurs offering them (mortgage funds) treat their business activities commercially as a way to increase their profits. The credit model, despite its regulation, does not work in practice. At the same time, the basis for the economic activity of these funds are the regulations governing annuity (Pl: renta) and life annuity (Pl: dożywocie) contracts – legal institutions with a maintenance function, whose aim is to help with maintenance. The importance of this function means that the debtor, as a party to annuity contracts, should not focus on making a profit, but on the material or personal support of the recipient. A discrepancy has therefore arisen between the maintenance function of annuity and life annuity and the commercial nature of the business of home reversion service providers, which distorts the essence of the former. Therefore, the legitimacy of invoking Articles 903-916 of the Civil Code to home reversion services should be questioned and the aim of this paper is to examine such legitimacy. The analysis leads to the conclusion that annuity and life annuity contracts, due to their maintenance function, are not an appropriate legal basis for a reverse mortgage. The discussion is based on the theoretical method, in particular on a causal and critical analysis.

Opis:: The use of stochastic differential equations offers great advantages for statistical arbitrage pairs trading. In particular, it allows the selection of pairs with desirable properties, e.g., strong mean-reversion, and it renders traditional rules of thumb for trading unnecessary. This study provides an exhaustive survey dedicated to this field by systematically classifying the large body of literature and revealing potential gaps in research. From a total of more than 80 relevant references, five main strands of stochastic spread models are identified, covering the ‘Ornstein–Uhlenbeck model’, ‘extended Ornstein–Uhlenbeck models’, ‘advanced mean-reverting diffusion models’, ‘diffusion models with a non-stationary component’, and ‘other models’. Along these five main categories of stochastic models, we shed light on the underlying mathematics, hereby revealing advantages and limitations for pairs trading. Based on this, the works of each category are further surveyed along the employed statistical arbitrage frameworks, i.e., analytic and dynamic programming approaches. Finally, the main findings are summarized and promising directions for future research are indicated.

Opis:: In this study, we present investigations of morphological changes in the inflorescence of bolting Allium sativum L., which forms umbel-like inflorescences with small, inconspicuous flowers, bulbils, and leaf-like membranous bracts. Particular attention was focused on the architecture of a single flower, and the full sequence of developmental events and the differentiation of flower elements and inflorescence were traced. During the several-year long investigations of the garlic species, we observed that all inflorescence elements emerged chaotically, taking a completely random place in the inflorescence receptacle and it was impossible to identify the sequence of formation of the individual inflorescence elements. The absence of regular phyllotaxis and the specific sequence of formation of inflorescence elements are characteristic for inflorescence reversion. Since domesticated garlic has lost the capacity for sexual reproduction, it has probably evolved alternative reproduction modes in its developmental strategy, which is reflected by the formation of numerous bulbils (vegetative buds, topsets) in the inflorescence. This is one of the forms of reproductive strategy of the species, which through domestication progresses from sexual to asexual reproduction.

Opis:: In his Commentaries, Proclus (Neoplatonic philosopher, 5th century A.D.) describes the ways in which a teacher can awaken the desire for knowledge and philosophy in a given soul, and help this soul to make cognitive and moral progress. He considers such an intervention to be a case of providence, analogous to both the action of divine Pronoia and the care of one's personal daemon. As the soul being thus educated is still unaware of the merits of rational thought, the teacher needs to use the emotions of his student to stimulate him; he might even want to generate desirable emotions in his soul. I focus here on two emotions: wonder and shock. The first serves to stimulate interest while preserving autonomy. The second allows deeper commitment at the price of reduced autonomy of the pupil. Both are complementary aspects of philosophical perplexity.

W pracy zostało zawarte omówienie rozwiązań prawnych dotyczących odwróconego kredytu, analiza wybranych zagadnień odnoszących się do struktury polskiego społeczeństwa oraz zwięzłe przedstawienie funkcjonowania tej instytucji za granicą. Przedstawione zostały wady i zalety odwróconego kredytu, a także korzyści i zagrożenia płynące z wprowadzenia tej instytucji.
Reverse mortgage is a new financial service introduced to Polish law in response to increasing problems of social security system and the need to fulfil financing requirements of senior citizens. The thesis includes elaboration on Polish reverse mortgage regulation, the analysis of selected issues concerning Polish society and a brief presentation on reverse mortgage market in foreign countries. The thesis also includes advantages and disadvantages of this financial service, benefits and threats resulting from this institution.
