Opis:: This article begins with a delineation of the context of contemporary professional journalism, particularly its market-driven, technologically advanced and discursively diverse character. Journalism studies scholars trace media evolution with the aid of content analyses. On the other hand, linguists, including stylisticians, try to capture recent changes in media language with the use of qualitative methods, e.g., with categories derived from discourse analysis, which enable them to see how hegemonic discourses are (re)constructed in journalistic texts. This article elaborates on the category of rhetorical style and shows its applicability to the studies of various media “rhetorics.” Following a review of literature and of author’s own projects, the article illustrates possible applications of and results of the analyses with the use of rhetorical style as a functional analytical category to delimit generic, register and stylistic variations of media discourse including its subgenres (e.g. headlines).

Opis:: The paper presents Wiersz na powrót z Sejmu Warszawskiego Jaśnie Wielmożnego Ferdynanda Dąbrowy Ciechanowskiego … (Poem for the Return from the Warsaw Sejm of the Most Honourable Ferdynand Dabrowa Ciechanowski...), an unquoted in references example of informal commemorative political poetry of the Duchy of Warsaw era. Published in the form of an ephemeral print, probably in Lublin in 1812, it was discovered in the collection of Hieronim Lopacinski Provincial Public Library. The poem, written in the high rhetorical, panegyric and laudatory style is a document of primarily historical value which depicts an important moment in the political (the Second Sejm of the Duchy) and religious (Uniates) life of the era.

Tytuł:: Declarative questions in Polish student conversations

Opis:: This paper focuses on the contextual factors influencing the status of declarative polar (information seeking) questions in Polish. The study is based on the two tailor-made corpora of Polish student conversations, specially collected in Kraków and Krosno from 2015 to 2017, out of which 28 examples of declaratives are analysed (out of 200 identified in the corpora). Polish question research tradition, contrary to English, does not recognize the notion of a declarative question, but it does recognize the issue in other terms. Declarative questions in Polish conversation corpora are here defined as statements requesting or demanding some information from the hearer (B-events in Labov's terminology), who actually responds or reacts to them, usually cued by rising intonation (with notable exceptions of e.g. ironic declaratives), and some emotive “bias” (rhetoric, irony, humour etc.); they are analysed in the article in accordance to the cognitive linguistic methodology, involving language-thought-communication continuum, advanced by Gerard Steen, broadly applied throughout this special issue. Major conventional markers (such as a/i and ale) occurring with declaratives are identified and analysed, followed by more extended, contextual usages (referred to here, as in the whole special issue, as ‘deliberate’, following Steen's approach to metaphors). Among the markers attention is also paid to various combinations of forms, including particle sequences and question clusters, all characteristic of Polish conversational declaratives. The analysis draws attention to the functions of declaratives, including the broad repair function established in other languages, as well rhetorical usages of declaratives (esp. repetitive, emphatic or ironic), which tend to be the non-canonical A, AB or D-events, typical of Polish communication style.

Opis:: Figurative language. Stanisław Kostka Potocki on tropes and rhetorical figures In this paper, the author presents a critical edition of three chapters on rhetorical de-vices excerpted from the treatise O wymowie i stylu (On Eloquence and Style, Warsaw 1815) written by Stanisław Kostka Potocki (1755–1821), an enlightened man of letters. He begins with a brief introduction to a reading of Potocki’s text on some figurative uses of language. The author explains the circumstances in which Potocki wrote his rhetorical manual (the request of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Learning) and discusses its most important sources, both classic (Aristotle’s On Rhetoric, Cicero’s On the Ideal Orator, Quintilian’s Institutions of Oratory) and modern (César Chesneau Dumarsais’ Traité des Tropes, Paris 1730, Hugh Blair’s Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, Dublin, Edinburgh 1783). With a few explanatory remarks on the three chapters presenting the nature of figurative language (in particular metaphor, personification, hyperbole and apostrophe) the author examines the connection between the rhetorical considerations on style and the Enlightenment philosophy of language. According to Stanisław Kostka Potocki, the tropes and rhetorical figures, being almost natural expressions of emotions, passions and imagination, should be regarded as the primordial origin of the human language. Thus the Enlightenment, the triumph of analytical (‘pure’) reason over imagination tinged with emotionality, is a period when authors intentionally limited the use of figurative language (although never totally rejected it) in order to reach the simplicity of the linguistic expression.

Opis:: The paper examines the rhetorical use and function of a provocative “rebel” persona in argumentative texts, collected from the youth column in Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten and the national speech contest for high school students, Ta ordet!, seeking to influence the audience’s attitudes towards green lifestyles. Approaching “the rebel” as a persona construction and a rhetorical appeal, I explore how young people engage with and participate in environmental debates and how their rhetorical intervention invites the audience to experience and perform environmental citizenship.
W artykule przedstawiono retoryczne zastosowanie konstruktu prowokacyjnej persony buntownika. Funkcje tego zabiegu zostały odtworzone na podstawie analizy tekstów argumentacyjnych z kolumny prowadzonej przez młodzież w norweskim dzienniku „Aftenposten” oraz materiały z konkursu krasomówczego dla uczniów szkół średnich Ta ordet!. Ich celem było nakłonienie odbiorców do przyjęcia zielonego stylu życia. Analiza posłużyła również do zbadania, jak młodzi ludzie angażują się w debatę publiczną o środowisku i jak ich retoryczne zaangażowanie włącza odbiorców do współuczestniczenia w ekologicznym obywatelstwie.

Opis:: Every year selected leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) speak to large audiences for regular devotional meetings at Brigham Young University, a private religious college in Provo, Utah. This study investigates the possibility that a rhetorical analysis of devotional speakers could be an effective way to observe typical language features in English public speaking that would be especially helpful for advanced English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students in improving their comprehension and expression skills. Using published transcripts and cassette tape recordings of these Latter-day Saint discourses, the analysis includes lexical, figurative, syntactic, schematic, tonal, and semantic aspects of each devotional speech. The results suggest that such religious discourses contain language details and rhetorical patterns in English that ESL students could learn to recognize, understand, and use persuasively.
Co roku wybrani liderzy Kościoła Jezusa Chrystusa Świętych w Dniach Ostatnich przemawiają do wielu uczestników zgromadzonych na regularnych nabożeństwach na Brigham Young University, prywatnej uczelni religijnej w Provo, w stanie Utah. W artykule przedstawiono hipotezę, iż retoryczna analiza mów głoszonych na nabożeństwach może być skutecznym sposobem poznania typowych cech językowych w angielskich wystąpieniach publicznych a jako taka może być pomocna zaawansowanym uczniom języka angielskiego jako drugiego języka (ESL) w rozwijaniu umiejętności rozumienia i mówienia. Na podstawie opublikowanych transkrypcji i nagrań nabożeństw, przeanalizowane zostały leksykalne, metaforyczne, składniowe, schematyczne, tonalne i semantyczne aspekty każdej mowy. Wyniki sugerują, że religijny dyskurs tego typu zawiera w sobie elementy i wzorce retoryczne typowe dla języka angielskiego, uczniowie mogliby uczyć się ich rozpoznawać, rozumieć i używać w praktyce perswazyjnej.
