Opis:: The article analyses two dramas by Jarosław Jakubowski: Dożynki and Nowy Legion (New legion), which their author designed as attempts at updating the political frame of Mickiewicz’s Dziady (Forefathers’ Eve), (especially ‘Warsaw salon’), read in the context of the ‘Smoleńsk romanticism.’ The right-wing approach to Mickiewicz’s archdrama offers a diagnosis of the social and political divide (‘two Poland’) in the aspect of the clash between two worldviews: left-wing and liberal versus right-wing. Mickiewicz’s authority is supposed to strengthen the right-wing diagnoses, hence it is easy to spot the numerous attempts at instrumental and anachronic reading of the romantic legacy. At the same time, the analysed dramas show the importance and the textual and ideological productivity of the romantic paradigm.

Opis:: With far right-wing ideologies coming to prominence in both Europe and the USA, we should ask to what extent the process is stimulated by the right-wing media whose discourse is based on Strict Father morality, grounded in the ancient concept of the Great Chain of Being. The application of such morality in politics and politically-biased media leads to the emergence of language of oppression, with the Other being stigmatised just for being the Other. This is seen as a threat to sustainable development, which aims at reducing inequalities based on disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion.
Nawrót popularności ideologii skrajnie prawicowych po obu stronach Atlantyku skłania do refleksji nad tym, w jakim stopniu proces ten jest stymulowany przez dyskurs prawicowych mediów, których oceny oparte są w dużej mierze na moralności Surowego Ojca. Ideologia ta ma korzenie w starożytnej koncepcji Wielkiego Łańcucha Bytu, na którym miała opierać się wszelka hierarchizacja świata. Zastosowanie takiej moralności w polityce i politycznie nastawionym dyskursie prowadzi do powstania języka opresji, skierowanego przeciwko Innemu, i stanowi zagrożenie dla idei zrównoważonego rozwoju.

Opis:: The article combines methods pertaining to Rhetorical Genre Studies and Discourse-Historical Approach in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of Krzysztof Bosak’s nomination acceptance speech which he delivered during the 2020 Confederation presidential primaries. The discussed genre of political speech is rarely realized in European contexts. Given various differences between the American and the Polish political systems, Bosak did not follow every pattern of the standard variant of the genre. Rather his speech appears to be more similar to a nomination acceptance speech of a third-party candidate. Overall, Bosak emerged as the leader of a divided and heterogeneous party, which was not given much attention by mainstream media. The paper investigates how these factors contributed to the structure and content of the speech. Moreover, recent decades have seen a rapid rise in significance of (far) right-wing movements in Europe. As Confederation is a relatively new political formation, there is a gap in research regarding the properties of its discourse. Thus, the present paper compares the discourse of the coalition with practices of politics of fear (Wodak, 2021).
Artykuł łączy metody z zakresu retorycznych studiów gatunkowych oraz podejścia dyskursywno-historycznego w celu przeprowadzenia kompleksowej analizy przemówienia Krzysztofa Bosaka, wygłoszonego podczas prawyborów prezydenckich Konfederacji w 2020 r. Omawiany gatunek jest rzadko realizowany w kontekście europejskim. Biorąc pod uwagę różnice między amerykańskim i polskim systemem politycznym, Bosak nie zastosował się do wszystkich wzorców standardowej odmiany tego gatunku. Jego przemówienie wydaje się raczej przypominać mowę akceptacyjną wygłaszaną przez kandydata reprezentującego pomniejsze formacje (third-parties). Zasadniczo Bosak przyjął rolę lidera podzielonej i niejednorodnej partii, której media głównego nurtu nie poświęciły zbyt wiele uwagi. W artykule zbadano, w jaki sposób czynniki te wpłynęły na strukturę i treść przemówienia. Co więcej, w ostatnich dekadach w Europie nastąpił gwałtowny wzrost znaczenia ruchów (skrajnie) prawicowych, do których można zaliczyć także Konfederację. W artykule porównano dyskurs tej stosunkowo nowej formacji politycznej z retoryką polityki strachu (Wodak, 2021).

Opis:: Although almost fourteen years have passed since Poland’s accession in the EU, a debate about the sense of membership and pros and cons of such state is still being held. Within different discourses that discussion takes different forms, is characterized by distinctive vocabulary and stylistic devices. Nowadays that debate has a post factum character, because since May 2004 Poland has been a member of European Union. That is why, wanting to study the debate on European Union, it is best to make an analysis of public discourse that was going on at the critical moment, which was directly before expressing the willingness to continue (or at that time not to continue) the integration in the EU-membership referendum in June 2003. The following work is on the attempt to make such analysis. The starting point for the study were two titles of Polish everyday press: the left-wing “GazetaWyborcza” and the right-wing “Nasz Dziennik”. The content analysis of them from the period directly anteceding the referendum allowed to describe the elements characteristic to both left and right discourse in the context of European subject matters.
Choć od czasu przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej minęło prawie piętnaście lat, nadal toczy się debata na temat sensu członkostwa oraz wad i zalet takiego stanu. W obrębie różnych dyskursów dyskusja ta przybiera różną formę, charakteryzuje się innym słownictwem oraz środkami stylistycznymi. Dziś owa debata ma jednak charakter post factum, ponieważ od maja 2004 roku Polska jest członkiem Unii Europejskiej. Dlatego chcąc badać charakter unijnej debaty, najlepiej jest przeprowadzić analizę publicznego dyskursu toczącego się w momencie krytycznym, a mianowicie bezpośrednio przed wyrażeniem przez naród woli (lub potencjalnie wówczas jej braku) dalszej integracji w referendum akcesyjnym, które odbyło się w czerwcu 2003 roku. Niniejsza praca stanowi próbę tego typu analizy. Punktem wyjścia do badań stały się dwa tytuły polskiej prasy codziennej: lewicowa „Gazeta Wyborcza” i prawicowy „Nasz Dziennik”. Analiza zawartości wydań tych pism z okresu bezpośrednio poprzedzającego referendum pozwoliła na opisanie elementów symbolicznych charakterystycznych dla dyskursu tak lewicowego, jak i prawicowego w kontekście tematyki unijnej i europejskiej.

Opis:: References to fear are often associated with narratives created by right-wing parties and media, especially while talking about issues such as gender, LGBTQIA+ or abortion. However, similar practices can be found in centre-liberal discourse, proving that the creation and reproduction of the dialectic of fear can apply to all agents, no matter their political affiliation. The article aims to challenge popular academic perceptions of the sources of fear by proposing a counterperspective that means to shift perception on agents of polarisation. Used examples focus on contemporary Polish mainstream centre-liberal newspapers which reproduce fear in their narrative, adding to both local and worldwide phenomena of political polarisation and radicalisation.

Opis:: This paper examines the discourse of four Polish right-wing news and political commentary services on religion and the Roman Catholic Church. The aim of this text is to identify the contexts in which references to religion occur. It is assumed that media representations of religion, religious practices, and religious institutions demonstrate the social significance and the role of religion. At the same time, those representations either sustain or redefine it. The study is exploratory in nature. It covers the period of the campaign before the 2020 presidential election. The analysis shows that in the discourse of right-wing news portals in the period covered by the study, religion was presented as marginalized in the political, cultural, and social dimensions.

Die Datenbasis besteht somit aus verschiedenen sprachbasierten und multimodalen Einheiten. Ziel ist es, zu zeigen, wie rechte Diskursgemeinschaften in Deutschland durch Wir-Sie-Relationen, Benennungspraktiken und visuelle Muster im Zeitverlauf und plattformübergreifend konstruiert werden.
The article examines how right-wing discourse communities are linguistically and visually constituted in social media in the context of flight, migration and Islam. The PEGIDA Facebook Corpus covering user comments (2014–2015), the PolRrA Corpus containing right-wing populist speeches (2016–2017) and the Instagram Corpus of the hashtag #identitäre (2019–2020) with postings and user comments are the data basis. Thus the corpus consists of different language-based and multimodal entities. The aim is to show how right-wing discourse communities in Germany are constituted by us-you relations, naming practices and visual patterns across time, platform and organization.
