Tytuł:: Varieties and transformations in emic interpretations of Catholic rituals in contemporary Podhale : a semiotic perspective on religious change

Opis:: In this paper, I examine intergenerational differences in emic interpretations of various types of ritual references in the religious culture of the Podhale region (Poland), which is known for its lavish celebrations of Catholic holidays and rites of passage. Drawing on Roy Rappaport's theory of ritual communication, particularly the distinction between self-referential and canonical messages, I analyze Podhale highlanders' attitudes toward the self-referential messages communicated by ritual participants. The analysis of my respondents' narratives revealed that a change in attitude toward ritual messages considering individual social status correlates with a change in the conceptualization of the ritual's reference to its transcendent object. This paper presents this phenomenon through the lens of the basic concepts of Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of semiosis and demonstrates that some changes in the religious culture of Podhale can be interpreted as changes in the dynamics between the components of the sign.

Opis:: In Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, a holiday is a ritual understood as a particular social structure. It has elements such as time and ritual space, objects and interactions, as well as a body and a language. Describing and analysing the dynamic of social celebratory rituals allows the role they play in social life and culture to be revealed. It emerges that on the one hand, the integrating nature of rituals strengthens the social structure and maintains cultural values and norms, while on the other it influences the shaping of the habitus and its transformation. Bourdieu takes into account traditional and contemporary aspects of celebration - (1) religious and magic, etc., rites of passage in the society of Kabylia in Algeria, and (2) French culture, which is familiar to him. Celebratory rituals are subject to institutionalisation, differentiation and individualisation. A change in the meaning of the idea of the sacrum in celebrating entails new traits that are characteristic of lay rituals. Ritual - ‘the structuring structure’ and the ‘structured structure’ - reflects social transformation, as is captured in Bourdieu’s analysis of different cultures’ experience of celebrating, in different times and locations.

Opis:: CEL NAUKOWY: Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zjawiska fenomenu rytuału rodzinnego w perspektywie jego funkcji oraz znaczenia dla życia rodziny i jej trwałości. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Prezentowany problem badawczy odnosi się do odpowiedzi na pytania: Czym są rytuały rodzinne? Jakie jest ich znaczenie dla życia rodzinnego i jego jakości w perspektywie stałości i trwałości? Zastosowano metodę analityczno‑syntetyczną literatury przedmiotu. PROCES WYWODU: Odwołując się do interdyscyplinarnych opracowań naukowych, dokonano analizy rytuału i rytuału rodzinnego z uwzględnieniem szerszej kategorii pojęciowej – tradycji. Wskazano też na fundamentalne funkcje celebrowania rytuału w rodzinie i korzyści, jakie można czerpać z tych wydarzeń w wymiarze jednostkowym i rodzinnym. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Pielęgnowanie rytuałów rodzinnych (bez deformacji bogactwa i wymowy rytuału) przyczynia się do harmonijności i zintegrowania systemu rodzinnego, kształtowania podmiotowych relacji i bliskich więzi małżeńsko‑rodzinnych, występowania elementów stałości, wierności i konsekwencji oraz reguł porządkujących funkcjonowanie rodziny. Rytuały rodzinne mogą zatem odgrywać rolę specyficznych niezmienników w zmiennym świecie oraz czynników więziotwórczych i integracyjnych rodziny. WNIOSKI, INNOWACJE REKOMENDACJE: Cechą konstytutywną współczesności jest dynamiczna zmiana, która wpływa na życie człowieka, wywołując nowe zagrożenia i szanse. Wskazuje się na wzrastający rozpad rodziny oraz osłabienie relacji rodzinnych. W dobie wszechobecnej konsumpcji i cyfrowo‑informacyjnej rewolucji rytuały rodzinne mogą stanowić swoiste remedium na zachowanie bliskich więzi w rodzinie, a przez to jej stałości i trwałości. Potrzebna jest w tym zakresie edukacja wszystkich pokoleń oraz promocja rytuałów rodzinnych i ich wartościowego celebrowania (działalność profilaktyczna), a także naukowa eksploracja tego pola problemowego.
Research objective: The aim of the article is to present the phenomenon of a family ritual from the perspective of its function and significance for the quality of the life of a family and its permanence. The research problem and methods: The research problem focuses on finding answers to the following questions: What are family rituals? What is their significance for family life and its quality from the perspective of its stability and permanence? The study is conducted using the analytical and synthetic method of the analysis of subject literature. The process of argumentation: Referring to interdisciplinary scientific studies, the article presents the analysis of the ritual and family ritual, taking into account a broader conceptual category - tradition. It also indicates fundamental functions of celebrating rituals in the family and the benefits that can be derived from these events in both individual and family dimensions. Research results: Adhering to family rituals contributes to the harmony and integration of the family system. Family rituals may therefore play the role of specific constants in the changing world and serve as factors which bond and integrate the family. Conclusions, innovations, and recommendations: The constitutive feature of the modern world is a dynamic change that affects human life, causing new threats and offering opportunities. Family breakdown and the weakening of family relations are frequent phenomena. In the era of ubiquitous consumption and the digital-information revolution, family rituals may be seen as a kind of remedy helping to preserve close ties in the family, and thus its stability and permanence. What is needed in this respect is education of all generations and promotion of family rituals and their valuable celebration (preventive measures) as well as scientific exploration of this problem area.

Opis:: The article is devoted to a single ethnographic phenomenon in its two geographically distant variants - the Tajik "mahak" and the Polish "Easter palm". Both, being associated with agricultural rituals, serve as magical items that allow the peasant to stimulate the coming growing season and to increase future crops, in a broader context, to ensure the happiness and health of animals as well as household members. The conclusions gatherted in the text are supported, inter alia, by A. K. Pisarchik’s research, as well as the author’s own. The article, however, does not exhaust the issue, on the contrary, it serves as a voice in the discussion on comparative research in ethnography.
Статья посвящена единому этнографическому феномену в двух его географически удаленных вариантах – таджикскому "махаку" и польской "пасхальной пальме". Оба, связанные с сельскохозяйственными ритуалами, служат магическими предметами, которые позволяют крестьянину стимулировать наступающий вегетационный период и увеличивать будущие урожаи, чтобы обеспечить счастье и здоровье животных, а также членов семьи. Выводы, собранные в тексте, подтверждаются публикациями А. К. Писарчик, а также собственными авторскими исследованиями проблемы. Статья, однако, не исчерпывает проблему, она требует развития дискуссии о сравнительном исследовании данного вопроса в этнографии.
Artykuł poświęcono pojedynczemu zjawisku etnograficznemu w jego dwóch odległych geograficznie odmianach - "mahakowi" tadżyckiemu i polskiej "palmie wielkanocnej". Obydwa artefakty, związane z rytuałami rolniczymi, pełnią funkcję magicznych przedmiotów, które pozwalają rolnikowi pobudzić nadchodzący sezon wegetacyjny i zwiększyć przyszłe zbiory, zapewniając szczęście i zdrowie zwierzętom, a także członkom rodziny. Wnioski zebrane w tekście potwierdzają wnioski przedstawione przez A. K. Pisarczyk, a także badania własne autora nad tym problemem. Artykuł nie wyczerpuje jednak problemu, wymaga rozwinięcia dyskusji na temat porównawczego badania tego zagadnienia w etnografii.

Tytuł:: Trance as the culmination of performance actions
Trans jako kulminacja działań performatywnych

Opis:: The aim of the text is to examine the performance theories of ritual from the point of view of their usefulness in analysing the ceremonial life of Shaman hunter-gatherer communities. The main thesis of the article states that whereas the performance concept of ritual shines an accurate light on selected aspects of the ritual life of hunter-gatherers, the methods used by such luminaries of performance studies as Richard Schechner and Erving Goffman are not sufficient to grasp the crux of the ceremonial life of a community whose religion is concentrated around the figure of the shaman. Using selected examples, the author attempts to explain the cause of this state of affairs, pointing to trance as above all a characteristic defining the model shaman ritual. The culminating moment of the trance is the end of the opposition analysed by proponents of performance studies between the individual and the stage. This fact forces us to revise some of the key premises postulated by the representatives of this paradigm.

Opis:: The article concerns a hitherto little known Sanskrit text called Karikas of Yogiyar a medieval commentary to Baudhayanaśulvasutra (ca. 5th century BC). The text in question deals with the construction of the Vedic altars specific to the Keralan sacrificial tradition. It is attributed to the ascetic Yogiyar from the village Taikkat Mana (Edappal), who probably lived around 16th or 17th century. Karikas of Yogiyar are presumably the only known independent śulvasutra commentary in Sanskrit of the post-Vedic period.
