Opis:: Paleoart can be defined as all the original paleontological and paleoenvironmental reconstructions containing interpretations of the appearance of extinct organisms, constructed on the basis of current knowledge and scientific evidence present at the time of its creation. Paleoart’s purpose is to visualize the organic life in the past geological periods. The word paleoart is also used in other informal sense, as a name for prehistoric art, most often cave paintings. Alternative concept of this term is the domain of archeological society. The basic illustrations in paleoart are: 1) simple line arts, showing the remains of the organisms with the lining of the body and/or muscles and tissues, 2) skeletal reconstructions where the bones are usually depicted as white while the black background represents the body profile of the specimen when it was alive. Dominating in the popular scientific field, "life appearance” or "life restorations” illustrations shows how an extinct organism or biocenosis looked like during life. Life appearance models in paleoart split into two categories: material and virtual. The material models are made in a variety of scales, from small figurines to massive 1:1 scale sculptures. Virtual models are computer generated images of extinct animals. They are made mostly for the purpose of films and sometimes for studies. In Poland, paleoart is a small-scale activity for specialized artists and scientists. Despite the problems derived from the progress of interpretation in paleontology, paleoart has a major significance because it is a perfect manner of spreading knowledge to the society. It inspires and develops hypotheses of scientists concerning extinct organisms.

Opis:: W tekście rekonstruowane jest i analizowane krytycznie Ronalda N. Giere’ego ujęcie modeli osadzone w jego modelowej koncepcji nauki. Wykazuje się, że Giere’ego koncepcja nauki ma braki, które powodują, że nie określa ona niektórych postulowanych w niej właściwości modeli, przede wszystkim ich niejęzykowego, abstrakcyjnego charakteru, a także czteroargumentowej relacji reprezentacji, która ma łączyć modele z rzeczywistością.
The paper reconstructs and analyzed critically Ronald N. Giere’s view on scientific models situated within his model conception of science. It is demonstrated that Giere’s conception of science is too poor: it is not capable of determining certain properties of models postulated in it. First of all, it does not present clearly their status of non-linguistic, abstract entities, nor the 4-ary relation of representation.

Opis:: Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest model wyborcy racjonalnego zaproponowany przez Anthony’ego Downsa w An Economic Theory of Democracy (1957). Zgodnie z ujęciem modelowym Downsa wyborca racjonalny to „maksymalizator” użyteczności oczekiwanej, zorientowany na cele polityczne i ekonomiczne oraz kierujący się wąsko (ekonomicznie) pojętym interesem własnym. Wyborca racjonalny jest więc konstruktem teoretycznym, który reprezentuje wyborców rzeczywistych jedynie w pewnych aspektach. Prostota i daleko idąca kontrfaktyczność modelu stały się przedmiotem licznych dyskusji, w których podnoszone są zarówno argumenty teoretyczne, jak i empiryczne. Krytycy zwracają przede wszystkim uwagę na nierealistyczność założeń psychologicznych modelu oraz jego niską moc eksplanacyjną i predykcyjną. W artykule przyjmuję odmienną optykę. Moim celem jest analiza wyborcy racjonalnego jako wyborcy modelowego. Koncentruję się więc na metodologicznych aspektach powstawania modelowej postaci wyborcy racjonalnego i na roli, jaką postać ta odgrywa w teoretycznych badaniach partycypacji wyborczej. Omawiam główne cechy metodologii budowy modelu oraz konsekwencje poznawcze jej użycia. Przeprowadzona przeze mnie analiza pozwala formułować ostrożne wnioski dotyczące nie tylko budowy teorii w politologii, ale także międzydyscyplinarnych podobieństw metodologicznych.
The subject of this article is the model of the rational voter proposed by Anthony Downs in An Economic Theory of Democracy (1957). According to Downs’ model, the rational voter is an “expected utility maximiser,” oriented toward political and economic goals and guided by a narrowly (economically) defined self-interest. The rational voter is thus a theoretical construct that represents real voters only in certain aspects. The simplicity and significant counterfactuality of the model have been the subject of much debate, involving both theoretical and empirical arguments. Critics mainly point to the model’s unrealistic psychological assumptions and its low explanatory and predictive power. In this paper, I take a different perspective, aiming to analyse the rational voter as a model voter. Therefore, I focus on the methodological aspects of constructing the rational voter model and the role this model plays in theoretical studies of electoral participation. I discuss the main features of the methodology of model construction and the epistemic consequences of its use. My analysis allows me to draw cautious conclusions not only about the construction of theories in political science but also about methodological similarities across disciplines.

Opis:: DSGE models (Introduction) have recently been criticized by P. Romer (2016) as pseudoscientific (Section 1). Their dominance is attributed to the uncritical “deference to authority” that has dominated macroeconomics “for the last 30 years”. In contrast, the paper aims to support the widespread view that – their problems notwithstanding – DSGE models meet the epistemic standards of scientific research. The argument turns on the recent advancements in theories of scientific representation (Section 1) and of empirical grounding (Section 2). The latter is illustrated with a historical case, which also substantiates Romer’s constructive point on the role of theory in design of measurements.

Opis:: The main purpose of this paper is to investigate and reconstruct the philosophical thoughts in Marian Smoluchowski’s papers (in his publications and in unknown manuscripts as well). He was an outstanding Polish physicist, who lived at the turn of the XIX and XX century. Smoluchowski was particularly interested in theoretical physics. His achievements in this discipline, some even very significant, have caused him to be perceived mainly as a physicist. His work in the theory of fluctuations and kinetic theory of gases, especially in the theory of Brownian motions, is well known to physicists. My attention in this paper is focused on the metascientific problems which dominated his philosophical reflections. His analysis in the fields on philosophy of science (the concept of hypothesis, theory) ought to be perceived in light of physics. Philosophical reflections were at the margins of science which he practiced – physics was always the background to his deliberations. An important limit to our deliberations was set by concentrating on issues typical of the philosophy of science. In Smoluchowski’s case, however, it is difficult to say that his branch of philosophy is characterized by systematic reflection. It is difficult to classify his reflection in the framework of any given philosophical trend.

Opis:: This article examines quantitatively the patterns of research phenomena being observed during last years in the field of cultural studies basing on the data acquired from Scopus – one of the biggest scientific bibliographic databases. The authors of the article were inspired to undertake such research from the recent amendment of Polish legislation called the Constitution for Science, which promotes inter-institutional and international research. Therefore, the results of the investigation were prepared for all countries publishing in Scopus indexed literature, but with particular emphasis on Polish participation. The conducted research allowed to identify the dominant publication languages in the studied field, the quantitative publication share of individual countries, the average number of authors per one publication from a given country, but also made it possible to identify countries willing to cooperate with each other, which was visualized on the so-called cooperation maps. In addition, Polish and global scientific productivity measured by the number of articles was embedded in the so-called Polish “ministerial list” of journals, which may give Polish scientists of the field of cultural studies hints on the choice of a journal dealing with relevant topics and being indexed in the Scopus database.

The plot of article consist on following questions: result of scientific research as product, process models of scientific research conducts, and also ethics questions in choice of scientific research and introduction to practice. Discussed questions have important role in farthest conduct of research and development, and so in this article take attempt to presentation of scientific research result of as product in connection between existing conditionality of demand and supply, and also indications ways of improvement these products.

Opis:: The article provides an overview of the Technology Assessment (TA) methods and procedures that have been used over the last forty years. Two typologies of methods are presented: the first is based on the project targets, the second reflects the origin of the method. Within the first group heuristic methods, methods of the future prediction and evaluation methods are discussed. The second group involves the economy derived methods, politically oriented methods and methods that come from the tradition of systems theory and systems analysis. Advantages and disadvantages of the methods in both groups are outlined. Finally the author presents optimal ways of methodological adjusting a technology assessment process to a problem, the order profile and the situation of the project contractor. A universal scheme integrating various methods and allowing to compensate their weaknesses is also discussed.
