Scientist organizational identity orientations

Researchers' professional pathways can be characterized by the multidimensionality of decisions and internal reasons for them. That is why we asked ourselves a question relevant to this problem: Do scientists have different identity orientations in organizational scientific professions? We prepared an EDA (exploratory data analysis) online questionnaire (n=109). The target respondents consisted of scientists with the Polish academic scientific titles of dr, dr hab., Professor Assistant, Professor. We have developed a measuring instrument for the various model constructs by adapting validated questionnaires established in management and cognitive psychology. Pioneering typology grid was created: six types of scientist organizational identity orientations - prestige, economic, carrier, science, power and human variables. The results of the analysis were statistically significant for the "science" variable. Scientists in the field of humanities achieved significantly higher results on the "science" orientation scale than those involved in social sciences. The results of the analysis were also statistically significant for the "power" variable. The results of the analysis were also statistically significant for the "power" variable, although the group of 31-40-year-olds achieved lower scores than the group of respondents aged 51 and over. The results, therefore, reflect the importance of fields and age differences in organizational meanings scientists' identity orientations.

Despite a high number of studies on students’ images of scientists, there is a lack of research on gifted students’ perceptions of scientists in the research literature. The aim of this study was to investigate gifted students’ perceptions of scientists and stereotypical images of scientists. The participants were 42 gifted students. The Draw-a-Scientist Test (DAST) was used to collect data. The findings demonstrated that gifted students had a variety of stereotypical images of scientists. The findings also showed that students’ drawings included fewer indicators of the stereotypic model on average. The drawings of fourth-grade students included more elements when compared to fifth-grade students’ drawings. As a result, it was found that there are some findings different from previous research. Considering the findings obtained from this study, this study has provided findings for teachers and science educators.

Scientist organizational identity : the diversity of perspectives

Objective: The purpose of this article is to show the diversity of possibilities for interpreting identities in the context of the academic profession by showing the different dimensions of participation in the academic community and personality transformations associated with the capture of certain attitudes and behaviors of the scientists. Methodology: The article is based on a critical analysis of the literature dealing with the sense of organizational identity in the scientific context. We expanded the characteristics associated with this issue to the recognitions arising from the complexity of participating in the life of science on many levels. The work provides an overview of the research approaches of potential detectable factors shaping the investigator’s personality in organizational terms. Provided a theoretical background on scientist identity in an organizational context in this paper provides the directions of the research that brings diagnosis in management sciences. Findings: Scientist organizational identity is the concept that provides a few interpretational directions that can be explored in the management context. The empirical views on this subject provide two levels of meaning. On the first level, it raises questions about individual needs related, on the one hand, to the factors of participation in this profession’s life, like prestige, carrier, and power. On the other hand, the second level’s meaning is connected with the scientist’s personality and compatible with his professional choices like scientific orientation on life choices and creative disposition of high professionalism. The multi-mentality of participation, both physical, emotional, and life academism discourse, brings many recognitions of the concept of scientific organizational identity. Value Added: Attention has been paid to the critical discourse on the theory of an organization’s influence on its scientific members’ identity. Also, an indication of the role of these processes in the power and hierarchy context. In the other context, we try to understand the role of individual human dispositions and professional socialization processes in the academic profession. Recommendations: Scientists’ organizational identity is an interesting direction to explore, that brings many reflections about the influence that brings the academic profession area to scientific senses of being. These processes also influence factors like bureaucracy, hierarchy, career politics, evaluation processes, and academic organizational narratives.

Opis:
Results from a series of five surveys among five groups of international climate scientists about their evaluation of elements of climate models and of climate change are presented. The first survey was done in 1996, the latest in 2015/16. Thus, our snapshots of the opinions of climate scientists cover 20 years. The results describe a strong increase in agreement concerning issues of manifestation of climate change, i.e., that the warming is real and not influenced by changing measuring and reporting practices, and concerning attribution of this ongoing climate change to ongoing anthropogenic causes. On the other hand, the evaluation of the climate models has changed little in the past 20 years. There are still significant reservations with the models ability to incorporate clouds and to describe rainfall. Obviously the growing conviction of ongoing man-made climate change is based on a variety of explanations, with modelling not being the predominant line of evidence. We suggest that it may be the repeated assessments by the IPCC, based on paleoclimatic evidence and stringent statistical analysis of the instrumental record which have led to the growing consensus of the warming and its causation. We stress that the presented results concern the opinion of climate scientists with a rather broad background. Our results do not assess if the opinions of the surveyed scientists are “valid” or “right”, but they recognize the character of science being a social process.

Permanent Way is a term covering the design, construction and maintenance of railroads, including both the structure and geometric layout of the track. Under the current classification, permanent way issues fall within the field of engineering sciences, in the discipline “civil engineering, surveying and transport” [34]. This discipline combines the design, construction and operation of railways and includes issues related to earthworks engineering, railway superstructure, geometric layout of tracks and their connections, as well as any track-related facilities like bridges, flyovers and tunnels. On the other hand, a subject of research under the same discipline is the problems of rail traffic and transport organisation.

The aim of this article is to analyse the vision of science and scientists presented in his dark materials by Philip Pullman. In the first part of the text, the author concerns on the relations between science and the Church in the mentioned trilogy, focusing on the difference in technological development between Lyra’s and Will’s worlds. The second part of the paper focuses on the scientists themselves and the explorers described in His Dark Materials: unethical characters represented by Marisa Coulter and Lord Asriel, who are portrayed in contrary to ’noble scientists’– John Parry and Dr. Mary Malone. In the last part of the text the ideas of multiverse and Dust are analysed. The whole article focuses especially on the topic of how Pullman unites the typical scientific issues with the elements of philosophical and theological nature.
