Opis:
The present paper proposes a CFD model to study sulphur dioxide (SO2) absorption in seawater. The focus is on the treatment of marine diesel engine exhaust gas. Both seawater and distilled water were compared to analyze the effect of seawater alkalinity. The results indicate that seawater is more appropriate than distilled water due to its alkalinity, obtaining almost 100% cleaning efficiency for the conditions analyzed. This SO2 reduction meets the limits of SOx emission control areas (SECA) when operating on heavy fuel oil. These numerical simulations were satisfactory validated with experimental tests. Such data are essential in designing seawater scrubbers and judging the operating cost of seawater scrubbing compared to alternative fuels.

Opis:
The high efficiency of industrial wet scrubbers is the result of a simultaneous formation of dust particle collectors. Collectors can be understood as droplets of atomised liquid, bubbles formed in the conditions of intensive barbotage, liquid surface and wet surfaces. All collectors are formed during the operation of a circulating unit. The efficiency of dust collection process also depends on the ability of dust particles to be absorbed by collectors. The study provides an experimental analysis of the effect of the increasing concentration of a dust collection liquid in the conditions of full liquid recirculation on the efficiency of dust collection process in the examined types of collectors.

Opis:
In the article, legal norms regarding the reduction of sulphur content limits in exhaust gases in special areas were presented. Then an overview of various solutions for supplying the marine engine with heavy fuel, distillation fuel and gas was made. In addition, the problem of using low-sulphur fuels in internal combustion engines was described. The presented solutions are a response to the latest provisions being part of the VI Annex of the MARPOL Convention, which entered into force on 01.01.2015. These provisions constitute that sulphation of fuel used in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) may not exceed 0.1%. Then, to meet the requirements, the conditions of using heavy fuels for supplying diesel engines were presented. Individual solutions such as the use of low-sulphur fuels, exhaust gas scrubber assembly, and the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the technical side were shown. Besides, the advantages and disadvantages of each of them were also indicated. In the following part, the economic analysis of the selected ship was made. Its purpose was to evaluate economically in the assumed time of operation, and then select the optimal solution for a given unit. For the comparative analysis, the use of low-sulphur fuels was used; the assembly of the scrubber, as well as the adaptation of the unit to use liquefied natural gas (LPG). The article was finished with conclusions; the most important of them is that the use of fuels with reduced sulphur content is the most expensive solution for the selected ship. The cost of the remaining solutions is at a comparable level, but they require greater interference in the ship’s construction.

Opis:
Open-loop sulphur scrubbers must be switched off, and the fuel must be changed to low-sulphur fuel before entering German inland waters. Immediately after the scrubbers are turned off, warm exhaust gases cause the residue left in the scrubber to vaporise, leading to the increased sulphur content of the exhaust gas. The momentary increase in sulphur emissions immediately after the open-loop scrubbers are turned off has received little attention in research. This paper presents the onboard measurement results of exhaust gases and examines the effects of sulphur compounds released into the air. In this case, the observed sulphur emission peak is problematic due to the geographical location. The ship sails to the river port, passing the coastal town of Travemünde, where the exhaust gases are released. Due to this, the emissions are more harmful when compared to emissions generated in the open seas.

Opis:
The article contains provisions on the prevention of sea pollution by ships, including, inter alia, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, developed in 1973 (MARPOL). The convention aims to protect the marine environment from oil and its derivatives. Special areas, where extraordinary measures have been taken to prevent sea pollution, due to the intensity of ship traffic and the greater threat of damage to the marine environment have also been presented. In the further part of the article, the applicability of various pro-ecological solutions, i.e. the use of catalysts, low-sulphur fuels, and in the case of using residual fuels – exhaust gas scrubbers were described. In the main part of the article, a technical and ecological analysis was made. In addition, difficulties resulting from the use of pro-ecological solutions were described. The costs of using low-sulphur fuel meeting the emission standards, installing the scrubber and modification of the natural gas combustion unit were compared with the assumption of ten years of passenger-car ferry sailing. Then the problems that individual solutions create were shown. In the final part of the article, alternatives to those described, i.e. the liquefied natural gas (LNG) power supply, electric and hydrogen drives were presented.

Opis:
The changing climate, constantly increasing industrial development, and developing economy force the legislator to raise air protection requirements. However, it is important not only to remove toxic compounds, but also those that reduce the quality of life. Such pollutants include, among others, odor-producing compounds. For the process to be both effective and have an ecological effect, it seems most reasonable to conduct these processes using biological methods. Biofilters and bioscrubbers are gaining popularity because they provide excellent results, are simple and relatively cheap methods, and are part of closed-circuit technologies.

Opis:
The article presents legal regulations, together with the characteristics of Emission Control Areas (ECA). It is connected with the new limit sulfur emissions in those areas. In this article the advantages and disadvantages of various solutions, i.e. switching to low sulphur distillates, installing the marine scrubber device and using of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as ship’s main fuel have been considered. Each of these solutions was described in respect of technological review, by the possibility of reducing harmful compound from exhaust gases, to investment costs. In another part of this thesis, there are the calculations of costs of fuel and necessary modifications for a selected passenger-car ferry. Costs were assessed for all of the mentioned solutions. The article was completed conclusions indicating which way is the most cost-effective.
