Opis:
The centrifugal magnetic fluid seals have important advantage over the conventional centrifugal seals. They maintain very good sealing capacity at static, medium and high speeds of shaft rotation, with the increased seal lifetime, and minimum torque and static friction. These seals are particularly useful in cases when the angular shaft velocity varies and sometimes decreases to nearly or exactly zero, such as in flywheel applications, ship propeller main shafts, etc. Unique properties of the magnetic fluid give rare opportunities for application in marine design, where perfect sealing together with reliable lubrication are required. The paper presents a typical design and operation principle of a centrifugal magnetic fluid shaft seal, along with new design solutions. Not only in ocean technology and underwater robotics. Some cases of application of centrifugal magnetic fluid seals in modern sealing technology are included.

Opis:
The paper presents a method for determination of static characteristics of a gas lubricated face seal on the basis of experiment performed on the test bench. It has been developed a mathematical model QN=f(tg, pg, n) depicting effect of temperature of the gas tg, pressure of the gas pg and rotational speed of the shaft n on flow rate value of the gas QN. This dependency was used to determine pressure of the gas required for a selected operational parameters of the machine. To asses correctness of functioning of the seal it has been performed measurements of a selected 3D roughness parameters of the sealing rings. Slight changes in values of the 3D surface roughness of stationary and rotating rings before and after 25 working hours allow for conclusion about nearly contactless character of operation of the seal.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of scientific research of the blade-type piston compressor which were conducted on the test rig built especially for this purpose. The construction concept of the compressor, design calculation of its main elements and tests of contact- and contactless sealing types were discussed in papers published at subsequent KONES-symposia 2009 and 2010. The results shown in present document are focused on studies of compressor having the piston equipped with labyrinth or contact seals. When testing on test bench, the intake air flow to the compressor as well as temperature and pressure of air compressed in the tank of 0.1 m3 were measured. Quick-changing pressure in the compression chamber and air temperature at the compressor's outlet were recorded and analyzed, also. The research was carried out for contact-type seals made of various materials which do not require lubrication and for contactless-type seals (labyrinth). In the course of studies the proper backlash between the piston and the cylinder wall was matched to ensure trouble-free operation of installation. The results of compressor power demand were presented in this article, too. This research work is performed under the framework program "Inicjatywa Technologiczna I" No 12218.

Opis:
The article reports the course of preliminary examination of a ferrofluid seal applied in liquid environment. A newly built research rig is described, and results of pressure tests performed for different shaft rotations are discussed. Other studies carried out in the past only referred to the gas environment, while the present examination aims at finding an answer to the question whether magnetic liquids can be successfully used in underwater applications. The obtained answer is positive, but further, more comprehensive investigations of the problem are necessary.
