Opis:
In recent years increased attention has been given in applied linguistics to the learning processes of various groups of special needs (SN) students, especially to those whose achievement is impeded by dyslexia or other learning difficulties. However, students with sensory impairment, particularly those who are Deaf or severely hard of hearing (HOH), seem to have remained on the periphery of second language acquisition (SLA) research although they constitute a highly interesting group both from a linguistic as well as a cultural point of view. Since the best approach to understanding how this special minority handles foreign language learning is by first exploring their so-called individual differences, a nationwide research project was launched in Hungary to investigate students’ language learning beliefs, motivation, strategy use and motivated learning behavior. As part of that project, the present paper intends to detail how self-related concepts of hearing impaired students at eight different SN schools  an be described. In order to gain an in-depth understanding, a mixed-method research design was employed. First, a barrier-free instrument was used to measure learner variables among 105 14-19-year-old Deaf and HOH learners. Then 31 individual interviews were conducted with selected students using maximum variety sampling. The quantitative data indicate that Deaf and HOH (D/HH) learners lack pronounced, well-developed and detailed future ideal L2 selves and corresponding visions to guide their learning. Another important finding is the paramount importance of language learning experience for our D/HH participants. Based on the analysis of the qualitative data, we can conclude that students’ language learning experiences are largely shaped by the choice of language used as the medium of education, the intensity and content of the English classes as well as how far students internalize extrinsic motives.

Opis:
The subject matter of the paper is motivation for second language learning under specific conditions of military service in the Czech Armed Forces. Motivation is the fundamental source of any human action, influencing goals and objectives, attitudes and efforts but also results achieved by each individual. As such, motivation belongs to the most important factors of learners´ success. The paper is based on an explanatory research perspective, aiming at identifying the relative importance of different factors of motivation in second language learning. The presented paper methodology consists of a questionnaire survey, followed by an analysis and interpretation of gathered data. The research material, covered by the survey, is the motivation of the Czech Armed Forces personnel attending foreign language courses to learn second foreign language at the University of Defence Language Centre in 2022. This survey has been designed to enable language educators to identify and further analyse relative significance of individual motivational factors and their perception by second language learners as either internal, or external. As the survey outcomes show, the Czech military personnel motivation to learn second foreign language is not primarily generated by their current job needs and requirements. At the same time, the Czech military personnel attending foreign language courses perceive their learning motivation as predominantly internal.

Motywacja do studiowania filologii szwedzkiej jako filologii rzadkiej
Motivation to study swedish philology as a rare philology
Autorzy:
Oczkowska, Karolina
Opis:
The aim of the bachelor thesis is to research, indicate and compare the motivation before starting undergraduate studies and then before continuing graduate studies on Swedish philology. First in the theoretical part concepts such as the mother tongue, the second language, foreign language, language policy and less commonly taught languages are explained, followed by a definition of motivation and its types and importance of motivation while learning second language. The second part showcases a research method and the third presents the results of the analysis in which we can become familiar with students' motivation to start and continue studies.

Opis:
This study investigated the consistency of a measure of integrative motivation in the prediction of achievement in English as a foreign language in 18 samples of Polish school students. The results are shown to have implications for concerns expressed that integrative motivation might not be appropriate to the acquisition of English because it is a global language and moreover that other factors such as the gender of the student or the environment of the class might also influence its predictability. Results of a hierarchical linear modeling analysis indicated that for the older samples, integrative motivation was a consistent predictor of grades in English, unaffected by either the gender of the student or class environment acting as covariates. Comparable results were obtained for the younger samples except that student gender also contributed to the prediction of grades in English. Examination of the correlations of the elements of the integrative motivation score with English grades demonstrated that the aggregate score is the more consistent correlate from sample to sample than the elements themselves. Such results lead to the hypothesis that integrative motivation is a multi-dimensional construct and different aspects of the motivational complex come into play for each individual. That is, two individuals can hold the same level of integrative motivation and thus attain the same level of achievement but one might be higher in some elements and lower in others than another individual, resulting in consistent correlations of the aggregate but less so for the elements.

The authors present the results of research carried out in 2017/2018 academic year and compare them with the results obtained in 1999/2000 academic year. The aim of the study was to find out the changes in students’ motivation for learning English as a second language in general and changes in hierarchy of motives which have a strong positive effect on learning English as a second language from diachronic point of view. The methods of mathematical statistics and computer data processing as well as discursive reflection for making conclusions were used in the research. 97 Law, Economics and Agro-ecology students of National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine completed a questionnaire for collecting data and evaluating motives. The results of the research have shed light on motives and motivation of present-day Law, Economics and Agro- -ecology students who learn English as a second language at higher educational institution.

Przegląd polskich badań nad motywacją w nauce języka angielskiego jako języka obcego
Autorzy:
Guzek, Gabriela
Opis:
The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the role of L2 motivation as a key element in the language learning process and show how it affects the students. The paper focuses on L2 motivation in the educational context and Polish research on L2 motivation. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part describes in chronological order the various theories on L2 motivation. The second part presents research on motivation in Polish schools in order to find out which approach is the most popular among Polish researchers. The analysis of the studies is conducted and the factors that motivate students to learn a language are described. In Polish studies, the division into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation turned out to be the most popular, and the important motivational factors proved to be integrativeness, a positive self-image, the classroom atmosphere, the role of the teacher, and attitude towards L2.
