Opis:: DEFINITION OF THE TERM: security is the absence of threats; it guarantees the certainty of existence and the preservation of one’s values, and it enables the pursuit of one’s goals. this state is achieved through the creative activity of a security actor in his attempts to eliminate threats and to enhance the mechanisms that provide him with a sense of security. HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TERM: Modern security systems and systems of social control began to emerge in the 19th century as a result of industrialisation, urbanisation, increased mobility, and the emergence of mass society. DISCUSSION OF THE TERM: today, new academic concepts such as securitisation theory, ontological security, and critical security studies are influential within the theoretical dimension of security theories, while in the practical dimension the old freedom-security dilemma is more acute than ever before. Moreover, mastering the tools of social control, which are based on technological developments, is a great contemporary challenge. SYSTEMATIC REFLECTION WITH CONCLUSIONS AND RECOM MENDATIONS: the issue of security is currently at the heart of public and private life. In this context, the question that needs to be answered is whether the implication ‘the more secure the better’ holds true.

Opis:: The effectiveness of any scientific research depends on the correct preparation of the research project. This cannot be done without the practical capability of applying scientific methodology. In the research process, the way of defining certain facts or the operationalization of concepts is of great importance. A key issue is the accuracy and reliability of research, as well as the construction of a theory based on an axiomatically structured layout of empirically verified theorems. The article is an important voice in a broader discussion of identity building in security science. The author is convinced that the empirical dimension of the identity of security sciences will find its application in the research procedure, as well as in the implementation of qualification work in this area.
Efektywność wszelkich badań naukowych uwarunkowana jest prawidłowym przygotowaniem projektu badawczego. Nie da się tego zrobić bez praktycznych umiejętności stosowania naukowej metodologii. W procesie badawczym duże znaczenie ma sposób definiowania określonych faktów czy też operacjonalizacja pojęć. Istotną sprawą jest kwestia trafności i rzetelności badań, jak również budowy teorii opartej na aksjomatycznie ustrukturowanym układzie twierdzeń weryfikowanych empirycznie. Artykuł jest ważnym głosem w szerszej dyskusji dotyczącej budowania tożsamości nauk o bezpieczeństwie. Autor jest przekonany, że empiryczny wymiar tożsamości nauk o bezpieczeństwie znajdzie swe zastosowanie w procedurze prowadzonych badań, a także w realizacji prac kwalifikacyjnych z tego obszaru.

Opis:: For Henry Kissinger, a stable international order is not only based on a balance of power, but also on a balance of identities, of “visions of itself ”. How do our observational theories of international relations come to understand this practical maxim? This article shows that rationalist theories, methodological underpinnings fall short of satisfactorily addressing the issue, while constructivism’s and post-structuralism’s social ontology and relational understanding of identity provide a better starting point. And yet, when we return from the level of explanatory theory back to foreign policy practice, constructivist theorizing, precisely for its focus on identity, risks of being abused for the purpose of nationalist apologies of the very kind that makes a balance of identities impossible.

Opis:: Jako przedmiot i temat publicznego dyskursu bezpieczeństwo Polaków zwykle jest zredukowane do bezpieczeństwa militarnego państwa. Tymczasem badania pokazują, że większość z nas myśli o bezpieczeństwie inaczej (troszcząc się głównie o swój byt i sprawy socjalne w kontekście bliskiego otoczenia), zgodnie zresztą z podzielanym systemem wartości prywatnych i zbiorowych. Artykuł ilustruje, jak bardzo sposób rozumienia bezpieczeństwa przez zwykłych ludzi odbiega od oficjalnego języka, którym posługują się generałowie, politycy i inni eksperci. Przeprowadzona analiza wybranych przykładów oficjalnego dyskursu o bezpieczeństwie prowadzi do wniosku, że składają się nań trzy składowe odmiany języka, przyczyniające się do zasadniczych problemów komunikacyjnych. Są to: dominujący żargon środowiska zawodowego oficerów-dowódców i oficerów-pedagogów, odmiana języka administracyjno-urzędowego oraz abstrakcyjny język akademickich ekspertów badających stosunki międzynarodowe. Artykuł napisany jest z perspektywy krytycznej teorii bezpieczeństwa i opiera się na danych pochodzących z reprezentatywnych dla ogółu Polaków badań społecznych
Polish security as a subject and object of public discourse is typically reduced to the military security of the state. Research has indicated, however, that a majority of Poles have a different approach to security (primarily caring for their well-being and social matters within their immediate surroundings), which actually conforms to the system of private and collective values. This paper illustrates the extent to which the way the ordinary people understand security differs from the official language employed by generals, politicians and other experts. The analysis of selected samples of the official security discourse conducted in this paper leads to the conclusion that this discourse uses three different language variations producing fundamental communications obstacles. These variants include the dominant jargon of professional officers in command and officers-instructors, an administrative and official language and an abstract language of academic experts who examine international relations. The paper is written from the point of view of critical security theory and is based on the results of representative surveys of Poles

Tytuł:: Between realism and social constructivism : "region" in regional security complexes theory and security communities theory

Opis:: Abstract: The main goal of the article is to present the core opportunities as well as problems of the Regional Security Complex Theory (RSCT) by Barry Buzan and Ole Wæver and the security communities theory referring to Karl Deutsch's assumptions and developed by Emanuel Adler and Michael N. Barnett. The research question the paper tries to answer is whether the position between realism and social constructivism of these two theories enriches them or makes them even more problematic by maintaining the dichotomy between objective and ideational factors. The structure of the article is as follows. First, after a brief introduction to the new "region defining" according to social constructivism, the main assumptions and limitations of the RSCT will be presented. Secondly, the paper draws attention to security communities theory also focusing on its main assumptions and problems stemming from its "between position". The conclusion shows the problems that scholars may experience with both theories, which are a result of their situation between realism and social constructivism. Consequently, neither the concept of security communities nor RSCT can be examples of theoretic syntheses or propositions for conducting research in the spirit of analytic eclecticism, but are rather examples of integrative pluralism.

Opis:: Problems related to social security can be seen as a particular type of security in various aspects. In the literature of political science, economics, sociology or security studies there are different concepts of characterizing this category. The issue of social security is a complex and ambiguous, because this phenomenon is dynamic and depends on many factors. This work is an attempt to answer the question of what are the theoretical basis of social security on the basis of the security studies and whether it can enter the other, closely related to national security category concept, eg. social security of the nation. The reference point for discussion is the system of national security. Authors proposed a definition of societal security of the nation and pointed out the main elements characterizing this concept as an opposition to the social security, understood in terms of welfare state. The other rationale for the choice of topic is also a need to shape the way to solve scientific problems of modern science on the basis of security studies, including those related to operationalization of concepts and gaps in knowledge, which should focus on the search for representatives of this new scientific subdiscipline.

Opis:: Security Studies include almost every aspect of human activities and various environments where humanity functions. Research that is held in this field results in theoretical conclusions, as well as catalogs of utilitarian good practices and optimal solutions. The descriptions of scientific inquires includes and uses terms that have their origins in various fields of social science, which forces the user to be able to properly use the specialist language. When looking at the literature in this field, one can see that there are many instances of wrong usage of specialist terminology, words borrowed from foreign languages and creation of new terms that are not necessarily useful when trying to understand security, systematization of views, or creating paradigms. The aim of this paper is to sensitize researchers from the field of security studies to take care to use the proper terminology apparatus that helps to develop this particular field of social studies.
