Opis:: In this contribution I present a meaning list for cognate searches in which meanings are, unlike in similar lists of “basic vocabulary” for the same purpose, organized according to semantic principles. This list is designed to identify possible cognates, which can then be scrutinized more closely in search for hitherto undetected genealogical relationships between languages, in a more effective way. Rather than proposing a completely new set of meanings to be featured, the list combines those most commonly used in extant lists of basic vocabulary such as the Swadesh or the Leipzig/Jakarta List, but introduces several design principles which are jointly able to represent also complex semantic relationships in the context of wordlists.

Opis:: Każdy system językowy określany jest przez dwa czynniki: pierwszy z nich to zbiór terminów tworzących leksykę, drugi natomiast to zbiór relacji budujących składnię. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba analizy typów relacji semantycznych słownictwa w tekście normatywnym na przykładzie francuskiego Kodeksu Cywilnego. W tym celu przedstawiony został opis relacji hiperonimicznych i meronimicznych właściwych korpusom specjalistycznym. Na tej podstawie spróbowano dokonać analizy wybranego korpusu i wykazać, że wiedza o wspomnianych wyżej relacjach semantycznych między wyrazami wchodzącymi w skład jednego pola semantycznego jest niezbędna zarówno dla prawnika jak i językoznawcy, by unikać wszelkich nieścisłości językowych.
Each language system is determined by two factors: the first of them is a set of terms forming lexis whereas the second comprises the collection of relationships building syntax. The aim of this article is the attempt to analyze semantic relationship types of vocabulary in the text of the normative character on the basis of the French civil code. For this purpose, the description of the hypernymous and meronymous relationship, typical for specialist corpora will be presented. On this basis we will try to analyse selected corpus and demonstrate that the knowledge of the abovementioned semantic relations between the words-forming part of one semantic field is essential both for a lawyer and a linguist to avoid any conceptual inaccuracies.

Opis:: This article deals with the issue of structural and semantic relationships in the area of Russian-Polish interlingual homonymy, such as exclusion, inclusion, and hybridization. The analysis of Russian-Polish homonymous doublets made it possible to specify two basic reasons for the differences in meaning of the lexemes in both languages: semantic divergence of the words with a common etymon (disintegration of polysemy) and phonetic convergence. The study revealed that interlanguage Russian-Polish correspondences with a partial coincidence of lexical meanings make up the largest group of interlanguage homo-pairs. The types of semantic relations described at the word level do not exhaust the variety of semantic relations between Russian-Polish interlanguage homonyms. The depth of meaning development is another theoretical problem of modern lexicology and lexicography. In addition to the semantic differences between Russian-Polish homo-pairs, there may be more complex relationships. They are observed in cases where stylistic and functional discrepancies are layered on semantic inconsistencies. The differences in pragmatic significance are the most significant and can form the subject of independent study.

Opis:: This paper discusses the notion of quantity and related notions from the perspective of their lexicalisation in the area of the so-called (functional, auxiliary) grammatical expressions. Such units, founded on the notion of quantity, create a microsystem composed of the following semantic and functional classes: interrogative pronouns, relators, prepositions, metapredicative operators (of gradation, limitation, approximation), conjunctions, particles, metatextual commentaries, and modifi er of declarativity. The semantic relationships between these units are similar to the ones noticeable between expressions from the relevant level of language; apart from that, they form pairs based on such relationships with units from outside the examined lexical and conceptual field. The paper also discusses the variant groups among the analysed expressions and units that are formally similar yet functionally different.

Opis:: This article discusses the applicability of semantic field analysis to the study of development and change in important interpersonal relations on the example of parent-child relationships. The narrative material was compiled from responses of 348 teenagers and young adults aged 13-30 years. Participants wrote about their parents (“Tell me about your parents”). On the basis of the context, semantic fields were generated for the high-incidence phrase “to love one’s parents”, which is the primary model of conceptualizing the parent-child relationship in our culture. The results demonstrate the material complexity of the „love for parents” semantic field in the study group, and reveal the associative network of other semantic relations involving this concept. They also confirm the hypotheses on subtle developmental changes in the understanding of “love for parents” between early adolescence and adulthood. The study presents the application of methods based on linguistic analysis of language to the analysis of developmental changes in important personal relationships.
