Opis:
To study coal permeability evolution under the influence of mining actions, we conducted a sensitivity index test on permeability to determine the influence of axial and confining stresses on coal permeability. Loading and unloading tests were performed afterward, and the differences between loading and unloading paths in terms of strain and permeability were studied. A permeability evolution model was built in consideration of absorption swelling and effective stress during modeling. An effective stress calculation model was also built using axial and confining stresses. The calculation results of the two models were compared with experimental data. Results showed that permeability were more sensitive to confining stress than axial stress, and effective stress placed a large weight on confining stress. Large axial and radial deformations at peak strength were observed during unloading. In the unloading phase, the permeability of coal began to increase, and the increment was enhanced by large initial axial stress when confining stress was loaded. permeability sensitivity to axial and confining stresses were used to explain these permeability changes. The calculation results of the models fitted the experimental data well. Therefore, the proposed models can be used to calculate effective stress on the basis of axial and confining stresses and describe permeability change in coal under the influence of mining actions.

Opis:
This paper is focused on neural models applied for estimation of state variables drive with elastic connection. Models that estimate speed of the load and shaft torque are analyzed. For calculation of weight coefficients of neural networks the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm was used. This stage of the whole design process was modified by application of the structure reduction of neural models (based on Local Relative Sensitivity Index). For this purpose significance factors of the connections were used. Prepared models of state variables have high precision of estimation for wide range of changes of reference speed and switching of the load, and also for changes of the parameters of two-mass system. Simulation results are confirmed by experimental tests.

Opis:
Should an oil spill of tier III magnitude occur in the Northern Adriatic, there is a high probability that the oil will reach and pollute the surrounding coastline. Therefore, it is vital to conduct coastal vulnerability studies to develop priority plans and coastal vulnerability maps to help first responders protect the coastline. As there is no common contingency plan for oil spills in the Northern Adriatic, three countries, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, which share the area, decided to participate in the North Adriatic Incident Response System (NAMIRS) project. Part of the project was to conduct a coastal vulnerability study in the area. One of the three pillars for determining vulnerability, in addition to the ecological and geomorphological factors, is the socioeconomic aspect, which was studied as part of the research. As there are no clear scientific methods to determine the vulnerability of the socio‐economic factors, a survey was conducted where the participants gave their subjective opinion on its value. This was done through three workshops organised in each participating country, where professional stakeholders familiar with the state of socio‐economic activities assessed their vulnerability. The values obtained were combined with the assessments of the geomorphological and environmental factors and gathered in a coastal vulnerability layer, which was incorporated into a GIS as a standard coastal vulnerability map that will help first responders prioritise coastal protection. The research results will also be useful globally and not just in the area studied by NAMIRS, since the method used is readily applicable to any part of the world.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza statyczna konstrukcji prętowych w ujęciu probabilistycznym. Parametry projektowe konstrukcji zdefiniowano jako wielkości deterministyczne oraz zmienne losowe. Zmienne losowe nie są skorelowane. Kryterium awarii konstrukcji określają funkcje graniczne związane ze stanem granicznym nośności i użytkowalności. Wyznaczono wskaźnik niezawodności Cornella oraz HasoferaLinda. Podstawową metodą badawczą jest metoda FORM. W celu weryfikacji poprawności obliczeń zastosowano metody: SORM, Monte Carlo oraz Importance Sampling. Wyznaczono wrażliwość wskaźnika niezawodności na zmienne losowe. W przedstawionych przykładach analizy niezawodności wykorzystano program STAND.
The study concerns the static analysis of rods structures in terms of probabilism. Structural design parameters are defined as the deterministic values and random variables. Random variables are not correlated. The criterion for structural failure is expressed the limits of functions referring to the ultimate and serviceability limit state. The Cornell and Hasofer-Lind index is used as a reliability measure. The primary research method is the FORM method. In order to verify the correctness of the calculation SORM, Monte Carlo and Importance Sampling methods are used. The sensitivity of reliability index to the random variables is defined. The STAND program is used to present the examples of reliability analysis.

Research background: Composite indicators are commonly used as an approximation tool to measure economic development, the standard of living, competitiveness, fairness, effectiveness, and many others being willingly implemented into many different research disciplines. However, it seems that in most cases, the variable weighting procedure is avoided or erroneous since, in most cases, the so-called ?weights by belief? are applied. As research show, it can be frequently observed that weights do not equal importance in composite indicators. As a result, biased rankings or grouping of objects are obtained. Purpose of the article: The primary purpose of this article is to optimise and improve the Human Development Index, which is the most commonly used composite indicator to rank countries in terms of their socio-economic development. The optimisation will be done by re-scaling the current weights, so they will express the real impact of every single component taken into consideration during HDI?s calculation process. Methods: In order to achieve the purpose mentioned above, the sensitivity analysis tools (mainly the first-order sensitivity index) were used to determine the appropriate weights in the Human Development Index. In the HDI?s resilience evaluation process, the Monte Carlo simulations and full-Bayesian Gaussian processes were applied. Based on the adjusted weights, a new ranking of countries was established and compiled with the initial ranking using, among others, Kendall tau correlation coefficient. Findings & Value added: Based on the data published by UNDP for 2017, it has been shown that the Human Development Index is built incorrectly by putting equal weights for all of its components. The weights proposed by the sensitivity analysis better reflect the actual contribution of individual factors to HDI variability. Re-scaled Human Development Index constructed based on proposed weights allow for better differentiation of countries due to their socio-economic development.

We propose a design of series-connected one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber cavity sensor (1-D PC-NCS) and one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber bandgap filter (1-D PC-NBF). The proposed structure can get a single air mode for refractive index sensing with its extinction ratio of 58.64 dB. It filters out the high order mode and reduces the interaction between signals. By 3D FDTD, the calculated sensitivity is 848.18 nm/RIU (RIU – refractive index unit). Compared with general silicon on-chip nanobeam cavity, the sensitivity is increased by eight times. The additional 1-D PC-NBF will not change the sensitivity and the position of the resonance wavelength. Therefore, the new design we propose addresses the issue of crosstalk, and can be applied to ultra-high sensitivity index-based gas sensing and biosensing without the need for complicated coupling systems.

Opis:
In this work, using the two-dimensional finite difference time domain method, we are theoretically studying the optical properties of a two-dimensional photonic crystal biosensor based on silicon rods arranged as a square structure in an air bottom with two waveguides and a nanocavity. For this purpose, six different cells are infiltrated into the point defect. These six cells are Jurkat, HeLa, PC-12, MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, and basal cells. As a result, we have successfully detected cancer and benign cases of these cells through resonance peaks in the transmission spectrum. We evaluated the sensitivity, quality factor, detection limit, and figure of merit at different values for sensing region radius for optimization purposes. We report that we observed the maximum sensitivity of 1350 nm/RIU at 0.15 μm for the basal cell. Finally, the proposed biosensor can be a miniaturized structure with extreme sensitivity in cancer cell detection models.

On the chronic need for sensitivity in the contemporary world It is extremely rare that humanistic discourse reflects on the category of sensitivity, a topic in a way perceived as a taboo and thus excluded. If discussed at all, it is usually juxtaposed with a rational, matter-of-fact and emotionless view of reality. In other words, it tends to be oversimplified, consequently turning into a misleading dichotomy where something is either rational or affective, with a clear line of demarcation between the two. The age of enlightenment has brought a distinct devaluation of emotions, feelings, “animal instincts”, and finally, of magical thinking in favour of reason. The author of the article forms a thesis that sensitivity, while devaluated and depreciated, constitutes one of the most important keys to understanding the condition of postmodern human. She argues that life in a world drained out of emotions is indeed dysfunctional, both for individuals and consequently, for entire societies.

In this paper, we establish formulae for inner and outer evaluation of the second-order contingent derivative of index nu of the efficient point multifunction in parametric vector optimization problems. The results contained in this paper extend the results of Chuong (2013a) to the second-order sensitivity analysis case. On the other hand, examples are provided for purposes of analyzing and illustrating the obtained results. Concerning the potential domain of application, the functioning of the majority of economic systems depends on a set of indicators (criteria), i.e., the substance of economic systems includes multiple criteria and only the lack of mathematical methods in solving the problems of vector optimization is an obstacle to the effective use of the respective models. Therefore, the study of vector optimization problems is necessary and has practical significance.
