Opis:: Grounded Theory (GT) is a research method that allows the researcher to make discoveries without a priori knowledge, and allows an open mind not an empty head. The use of this method is also desirable for serendipity to occur in the research process. This article therefore aims to chronologically present how serendipity has grown over time in the use of the GT method in a field of research focusing on highly demanding conditions such as disaster management and military operations. We will discuss a new concept, namely, reflexive serendipity, which encompasses the conditions required for making discoveries in the interview analysis. These may be contextual aspects and the role of the researcher, which includes having an open mind and the necessary perseverance and discipline to be able to succeed with GT and serendipity.

Opis:: This presentation argues that we seldom speak of our findings in qualitative research as serendipitous, although we have splendid possibilities to make surprising findings. In order to enhance the chances and sharpen our analyses we have to read broadly but also pay attention to details in our data. We should avoid societal or scholarly conventionality, even be disobedient to recommendations, if this blinds us to new meanings of our findings. The value of serendipitous findings lies in the fact that they diverge from conventionally held knowledge. Thus, we have to retain our curiosity, with the “strange intoxication” or passion that Ma XWeber wrote about in Science as Vocation.

Tytuł:: Students’ Accidental Information Acquisition on the Internet
Przypadkowe pozyskiwanie informacji przez studentów w Internecie

Opis:: The subject of the thesis is accidental information acquisition, known also as serendipity. The main goal has been to determine, whether students retrieve information in that way on the Internet and to recognize their awareness and experience in this regard. Thanks to applying the method of critical literature review, nature of the phenomenon has been discussed, as well as factors affecting it and online systems’ features facilitating serendipity. The qualitative methodology and semi-structured interview method have been employed to examine the group of Jagiellonian University students. Qualitative content analysis of respondents’ answers revealed that students acquire information accidentally on the Internet and they are able to describe such examples. They correctly understand this phenomenon and positively perceive its value. Those findings prove that accidental information acquisition is an important issue not only in the area of user’s information behavior studies, but also because of its potential use to online systems improval.
Przedmiotem pracy jest zagadnienie przypadkowego pozyskiwania informacji, określane również jako serendipity. Zasadniczy cel stanowiło określenie, czy studenci zdobywają w ten sposób informacje w Internecie oraz poznanie ich świadomości tematu, jak również ich doświadczeń w tym zakresie. Dzięki zastosowaniu metody analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa stworzono omówienie natury zjawiska, oddziałujących na nie czynników oraz przedstawiono cechy internetowych systemów, sprzyjających przypadkowemu pozyskiwaniu informacji. Postępując zgodnie z zasadami metodologii jakościowej, wykorzystując metodę wywiadu częściowo ustrukturyzowanego przeprowadzone zostało badanie wybranej grupy studentów Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Poddane jakościowej analizie treści, wypowiedzi respondentów wykazały, że studenci pozyskują przypadkowo informacje w Internecie oraz potrafią opisać tego rodzaju przykłady. Co więcej, właściwie pojmują badane zjawisko i pozytywnie postrzegają jego wartość. Wyniki te dowodzą, iż przypadkowe pozyskiwanie informacji stanowi zagadnienie istotne nie tylko z punktu widzenia badań zachowań informacyjnych użytkowników, ale również ze względu na jego potencjalne wykorzystanie w celu doskonalenia systemów informacyjno – wyszukiwawczych.

Opis:: This paper sets out my acquaintance with the work of ESREA since 2016, my reading about autobiographical research and the development of my ideas for a study of The Companionship of Books or what is now known as bibliotherapy. I have defined this as how reading books can help to make us feel better. The paper looks at what kind of books this might be and suggests that most may be found in the area of literature, although not exclusively so, and other types such as autobiography or natural history books are suggested. Theories underpinning bibliotherapy are put forward both by literary specialists and by psychotherapists. The views of my own literature students are also set out and examined as are my own views. I refer to my own early experiences of the restorative power found in literature, particularly poetry, and this is referred to as part of a longer autoethnographic enquiry into the subject which this paper is the preface to. A number of personal stories relating to reading books for assistance in difficult times are referred to, again poetry featuring significantly, but also the value of libraries in supporting and enabling individuals to survive life’s rigors. Finally, a parliamentary report is mentioned, referring to the role of the arts in general as a source of improving our mental wellbeing and the contribution to played by two of its proponents in furthering this aim. In my conclusion the importance of adult education is stressed in ensuring that The Companionship of books can help us to progress in a post-pandemic world.

Opis:: I would like to present the possibility of broadening the traditional methodological and technical skills of researcher and analyst, but also the intellectual capacity of the researcher associated with combining data, categorizing, linking categories, as well as the interpretation of the causes and consequences of the emergence of certain social phenomena. Some methodologies, methods, and research techniques are more conducive to creative conceptual and interpretive solutions. Therefore, I describe the serendipity phenomenon in such methodologies as grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenological research, and contemplative inquiry. The problem of intuition in qualitative research will be also described in the paper. There will be presented also some suggestions how to be creative in qualitative research. From the review of issues of creativity in qualitative research we can derive the following conclusions: Creativity in qualitative research depends on the strength of a priori conceptualization and stiffness of the adapted methods of research and analysis. If the methodology is more flexible (as the methodology of grounded theory), the researcher can get to phenomena that he/she has not realized and which are still scantily explored in his/her field of expertise. The phenomenological and contemplative approaches allow the use of the investigator’s feelings and experience as they appear in the studied phenomena, which usually does not take place in objectifying and positivistic research. The investigator may therefore consciously use these methodologies and approaches that foster creativity. The researchers can improve their skills in thinking and creative action by doing some methodical exercises (journal writing, writing poetry as a summary of the collected data, the use of art as representation of the phenomenon, the use of meditation, observation of the body feelings, humor, etc.).

Opis:: The paper deals with the issue of “serendipity” (which constitutes the context of discovery) in field research and the analysis of data by using the grounded theory methodology. The thesis of the paper is: the methodology of grounded theory is naturally associated with serendipity. We describe two aspects of serendipity in grounded theory: 1. substantive, and 2. theoretical. We present in the paper serendipity phenomenon by using the case of research on the “social world of pet owners”. We show how the research is developed by a sequence of decisions being made by researchers. The process of emergence of the main analytical category, subcategories and the whole theoretical construction during the long time of the field research and theoretical group analysis is presented, as well as the procedure of coming to unanticipated theoretical conclusions. It was all possible because of the interactional character of serendipity happening during the research in grounded theory style of investigation.

Opis:: W artykule chciałbym przedstawić zestaw koncepcji umożliwiających poszerzenie tradycyjnych, metodycznych i technicznych umiejętności badacza i analityka jakościowego oraz jego umiejętności intelektualnych związanych z łączeniem kategorii, interpretacji danych, a także interpretacji przyczyn i skutków powstania pewnych zjawisk społecznych. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie i opisanie niektórych metodologii, metod i technik badawczych, których poznanie, jak i użycie pewnych procedur z nich pochodzących, może sprzyjać twórczym rozwiązaniom koncepcyjnym i interpretacyjnym. Dlatego opiszę zjawisko kontekstu odkrycia, będącego egzemplifikacją nowych twórczych rozwiązań, w odniesieniu do następujących metodologii: metodyki badawczej interakcjonizmu symbolicznego, badań kontemplatywnych, fenomenologii, etnografii, metodologii teorii ugruntowanej. Ponadto poruszony zostanie także problem intuicji w badaniach jakościowych, która często wnosi nowe i wartościowe inspiracje do badań empirycznych. Przedstawione zostaną również pewne wnioski, będące wynikiem analiz wyżej wymienionych koncepcji, a dotyczące tego, jak być kreatywnym w badaniach jakościowych.
In this article, I would like to present a set of concepts that offer the possibility of, on the one hand, broadening the traditional, methodological, and technical skills of a researcher and a qualitative analyst, as well as, on the other, increasing the researcher’s intellectual capacity associated with combining categories, interpreting data, and interpreting the causes and effects of the emergence of certain social phenomena. The objective of the article is to indicate and describe some of the methodologies, methods, and research techniques, the recognition of which—as well as the use of certain resultant procedures—can be conducive to creative conceptual and interpretative solutions. Therefore, I am going to describe the serendipity phenomenon, which exemplifies new creative solutions with regard to the following research methodologies: symbolic interactionism, contemplative studies, phenomenology, ethnography, and grounded theory. Moreover, the question of intuition in qualitative research will be addressed as well. Some suggestions with regard to how to be creative in qualitative research will be presented as a consequence of the analyses of the above-mentioned concepts.
