Opis:: The sessile drop method was implemented to calculate the values of the surface tension coefficient of liquid metals. Appropriate software was developed to increase the data processing efficiency and the accuracy of the obtained results. This paper provides information on the structure and applications of the designed programs as well as the underlying mathematical models used during computations. Since the determination of the surface tension coefficient in this study is based on the recognition of drop outlines from a digital image, the problems of calibration and appropriate photography mode adjustments are mentioned in this paper. In addition, the methods of controlling the research equipment using Arduino shields are described. Finally, the research results are presented in the form of graphs which show the temperature dependence of the studied parameters of metallic samples and compared with the literature data.

Opis:: In this work, FEI Scios^TM field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG SEM) equipped with a unique combination of analytical and imaging detectors was utilized to examine structure and chemistry of selected Si/ refractory couples. The couples were obtained in wettability tests performed by the sessile drop method coupled with contact heating of a refractory substrate (h-BN, SiC) at ultra-high temperature (up to 1750°C). The SEM observations were carried out on top-views of the couples, in order to evaluate surface and interfacial phenomena in Si/h-BN and Si/SiC systems. A full range of available detectors (e.g. classical Everhart-Thornley detector (ETD) or advanced in-lens detectors) working under various operation modes (secondary electrons (SE), backscattered electrons (BSE), a mixed mode), were used upon analyses in order to reveal specific features of obtained structures.

Opis:: High temperature behavior of three compacted graphite iron (CGi) alloys on polycrystalline aluminasubstrates (99.7%, porosity <3%) were examined by the sessile drop method combined with classical contact heating procedure in flowing Ar. High-speed high-resolution CCd camera was used for continuous recording of the CGi/Al₂ O₃ couples during melting alloy, heating to and holding the couples at the test temperature of 1450°C for 15 min and their subsequent cooling. The comparative studies were made with conventional CGi (in wt.%: 3.70 C, 2.30 Si, 0.44 Mn, 0.054 P, 0.017 Mg, 0.015 S) and two alloys additionally containing the same amounts of 0.25 Mo, 0.1 V, 0.045 Sn and 0.032 Sb with different concentrations of Mg + Cu additions, i.e. 0.01Mg + 0.33Cu and 0.02Mg + 0.83Cu. All three CGi alloys demonstrated non-wetting behavior on the Al₂ O₃ substrates while the contact angle values slightly decreased with increase of the Mg + Cu content in the alloy, i.e. 131° (unalloyed CGi), 130° (0.01Mg + 0.33Cu) and 125° (0.02Mg + 0.83Cu). Structural characterization of solidified couples by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed: 1) heterogeneous nucleation of discontinuous graphite layer at the drop-side interfaces and on the surface of the drops; 2) reactively formed Mg-rich oxide layer at the substrate-side interface; 3) the formation of satellite droplets on the surface of the drops during their solidification; 4) degeneration of initially compacted graphite to lamellar graphite after remelting and subsequent solidification of the drops, particularly in their surface layer.

Opis:: In the present paper, the contact angle measurements using six different xanthate solutions and distilled water were studied on twelve polished pyrite surfaces using sessile drop method. The 10% solutions of three potassium and three sodium xanthates were used. The pyrite samples from six countries and ten different deposits were utilized. The chemical composition of pyrites was studied using EDX microanalysis which proved that pyrite samples were not heterogenic. No relation or dependence between the contact angle and the chemical composition (i.e., Fe:S ratios) was found. The average values of contact angles measured using potassium and sodium xanthates were lower than the values of contact angle measured using distilled water. From these measurements can be concluded, that the pyrite samples are favourably wetted by either potassium or sodium xanthates than distilled water in flotation environment. The comparison of potassium and sodium xanthates showed better suitability of the potassium xanthates for the possible pyrite flotation (lower contact angle was measured on eight out of twelve samples for potasium xanthates). Pyrite samples Sokolov, Jachymov and Kutna Hora showed the lowest average contact angle values from all xanthates using potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) with average values of 34,80°, 42,94° and 31,01° respectively. The sodium xanthates would be more appropriate for the Navajun 2 and 3, Jachymov Sadon, and Norilsk pyrite samples. Very small differences in average contact angle values were obtained when potassium/sodium ethyl and isobutyl xanthates were compared. The minimum average values of contact angle for six out of twelve samples and for five out of eight samples in hydrothermal deposits were measured using ethyl xanthates what makes them the most suitable collectors for the pyrite samples from hydrothermal deposits and for pyrites in general. Even smaller variation in the results was showed using isobutyl xanthates with the highest average values of contact angle what makes them not suitable as the collectors for pyrite samples used in this study. The average value of contact angle measured using SIBX was 58,50°.
W pracy tej badano pomiary kąta zwilżania z użyciem trzech różnych roztworów ksantatui wody destylowanej na dwunastu polerowanych powierzchniach pirytu za pomocą metody osadzania kropli. Użyty został 10% roztwór trzech ksantatów potasu i trzech ksantatów sodu. Wykorzystane zostały próbki pirytu z sześciu państw i dziesięciu różnych depozytów. Skład chemiczny pirytów był zbadany za pomocą mikroanalizy EDX, która udowodniła, że próbki pirytu nie były heterogeniczne. Nie znaleziono żadnej relacji lub zależności między kątem zwilżania i składem chemicznym (np. stosunku Fe:S). Średnie wartości kąta zwilżania zmierzone z użyciem ksantatów potasu i sodu były niższe niż wartości kąta zwilżania zmierzone z użyciem wody destylowanej. Z pomiarów tych można wnioskować, że próbki pirytu są łatwiej zwilżane za pomocą ksantatów potasu lub sodu niż za pomocą wody destylowanej w środowisku flotacyjnym. Porównanie ksantatów potasu i sodu wykazało lepszą przydatność ksantatu potasu w możliwej flotacji pirytu (niższy kąt zwilżania został zmierzony w ośmiu z dwunastu próbek dla ksantatu potasu). Próbki pirytu Sokolov, Jachymov i Kutna Hora wykazały najniższe średnie wartości kąta zwilżania ze wszystkich ksantatów z użyciem potasowego amylu ksantatu (PAX) ze średnimi wartościami odpowiednio 34,80°, 42,94° i 1,01°. Ksantaty sodu mogą być bardziej odpowiednie dla próbek pirytu Navajun 2 i 3, JachymovSadon i Norilsk. Bardzo małe różnice w wartościach średnich kąta zwilżania zostały uzyskane gry potasowy lub sodowy etyl i izobutyl ksantatu były porównywane. Minimalne średnie wartości kąta zwilżania dla sześciu z dwunastu próbek i na pięciu z ośmiu próbek z depozytów hydrotermalnych były zmierzone z użyciem etylu ksantatu co czyni je najbardziej odpowiednimi kolektorami dla próbek pirytu z depozytów hydrotermalnych i pirytów w ogóle. Jeszcze mniejsze wahania wyników wykazano używając izobutylu ksantatów lecz uzyskano najwyższe średnie wartości kąta zwilżania co czyni je niewłaściwymi kolektorami dla próbek pirytu użytych w tym badaniu. Średnia wartość kąta zwilżania zmierzonego z użyciem SIBX wynosiła 58,50°.

Opis:: In this paper examinations of high-temperature wetting tests of 3 systems of liquid alloy – cast iron in contact with ceramic materials: magnesia ceramics in combination with natural graphite were presented. After wettability testing, the microscopic observations of the morphology of the sample surface and the cross-section microstructure with the chemical composition in micro-areas were examined. One of the objective of this work was also to verify whether the graphite content would affect the wettability of the magnesia ceramics. The study of high-temperature wetting kinetics of the liquid alloy in contact with the ceramic material, by the "sessile drop" method with capillary purification (CP) procedure was conducted. Under the test conditions, at a temperature of 1450°C and time 15 minutes, all 3 experimental systems showed a non-wetting behaviour. The average contact angle for the system with cast iron drop on magnesia ceramics was 140°, on magnesia ceramics with 10 parts per weight of graphite was 137° and on magnesia ceramics with 30 parts per weight of graphite - 139°. Microscopic observations revealed that in the case of the sample consisting of the cast iron drop on the substrate with magnesia ceramics, the formation of fine separations was not observed, unlike the systems with the substrate with magnesia ceramics and the addition of natural graphite. Numerous, fine droplets accumulate on the graphite flakes and consist mainly of Si as well as Fe and O. On the other hand, the rough MgO grains have a gray, matt surface, without fine separations. The conducted observations indicate the mechanical nature of the bonding - liquid metal penetrates into the pores of the rough ceramics of the substrate. However, in the case of systems of cast iron drop with magnesia ceramics and addition of graphite, probably the adhesive connection and the physical attraction of elements derived from cast iron drop with the flake graphite appeared as well.

Opis:: In the paper, results of surface tension measurements with regard to liquid copper-silver alloys with the maximum silver content of 40 % mass Ag are presented. The measurements were performed at 1373-1573 K with the use of the sessile drop method. In the study, a high-temperature microscope, coupled with a camera and a computer equipped with the software designed for experiment recording and picture analysing, was applied. In order to determine surface tension values, the least square estimation of the parameters of the system of differential equations, describing the shape of a liquid sessile drop, was used.
W prezentowanej pracy przedstawiono wyniki pomiarów napięcia powierzchniowego ciekłych stopów miedzi ze srebrem o maksymalnej zawartości 40 % mas. Ag. Badania przeprowadzono w zakresie temperatur 1373-1573 K. Wykorzystano metodę kropli leżącej. Zastosowano aparaturę pomiarową składającą się z mikroskopu wysokotemperaturowego sprzężonego z kamerą i komputerem wyposażonym w oprogramowanie pozwalające na rejestrację przebiegu eksperymentu oraz analizę obrazu. Do wyznaczania napięcia powierzchniowego zastosowano procedurę obliczeniową polegającą na estymacji metodą najmniejszej sumy kwadratów parametrów układu równań różniczkowych opisujących kształt leżącej kropli cieczy.

Opis:: Metodę kropli leżącej zaadaptowano do badań wpływu wielokrotnego przetapiania i odlewania metalowych materiałów kompozytowych na strukturalną stabilność zawiesiny metalowo-ceramicznej. Do badań stosowano komercyjny kompozyt o osnowie stopu aluminium A359 (AlSiMg) firmy DURALCAN zawierający ok. 20% obj. cząsteczek tlenku glinu. Kompozyt poddano 10-krotnemu przetopieniu i odlewano, stosując dwa procesy znacznie różniące się czasem krzepnięcia zawiesiny metalowo-ceramicznej, tj. odlewanie grawitacyjne oraz prasowanie w stanie ciekłym (squeeze casting). Próbki kompozytu po każdorazowym cyklu przetopu i odlewania poddano badaniom wysokotemperaturowym na podłożu z tlenku glinu w próżni w temperaturze 850°C w ciągu 30 min. Zarówno bezpośrednia obserwacja zachowania próbek kompozytu podczas ich nagrzewania, jak i analiza strukturalna zakrzepłych próbek wykazała, że podczas topienia powstająca kropla zawiesiny metalowo-ceramicznej nie ulega rozwarstwianiu i zachowuje stabilność w badanym okresie czasowym, niezależnie od liczby przeprowadzonych przetopów i zastosowanego następnie sposobu odlewania kompozytu. Uzyskane wyniki potwierdzają dotychczasowe badania wskazujące na możliwość wielokrotnego przetapiania i ponownego odlewania kompozytów metalowych bez istotnej utraty ich właściwości użytkowych. Stwierdzona wysoka stabilność pierwotnej jednorodności zawiesiny metalowo- -ceramicznej upoważnia do zakwestionowania powszechnie akceptowanej tezy o nieprzydatności odlewanych kompozytów metalowych do recyklingu.
The sessile drop method was adopted to investigate the effect of multiple re-melting and casting of metal matrix composite on the structural stability of metal-ceramic slurry. Commercial aluminum matrix composite made of the A359Al alloy reinforced with about 20 vol. % Al₂O₃ particles was produced by DURALCAN and next re-melted and recast ten times using two casting methods, i.e. conventional gravity casting and squeeze casting. The samples taken from all composite ingots produced after every cycle of re-melting and re-casting were used for high temperature tests at a temperature of 850°C for 30 min, under vacuum conditions. Both direct observations of the behavior of composite samples placed on alumina substrates during their contact heating and at the test temperature as well as the detailed structural characterization of solidified droplets have shown high structural stability of the metalceramic slurry, irrespective of the number of re-melts and type of casting process used afterwards. The high stability of the originally obtained composite microstructure in each subsequent re-melting step in this study also entitles one to question the widely accepted opinion on the difficulties with re-melting of cast composites, and thus their unsuitability for recycling.

Opis:: The study involved measurements of surface tension of liquid binary copper-bismuth alloys with respect to their chemical composition and temperature as well as investigations of the liquid alloy - refractory material - gaseous phase system wettability using usual refractory materials, i.e. aluminium oxide, magnesium oxide and graphite. The experiments were performed with the use of sessile drop method and a high-temperature microscope coupled with a camera and a computer was utilised.
W ramach pracy przeprowadzone zostały pomiary napięcia powierzchniowego ciekłych dwuskładnikowych stopów miedzi z bizmutem, w funkcji składu chemicznego i temperatury oraz badania zwilżalności w układzie: ciekły stop- materiał ogniotrwały-faza gazowa z wykorzystaniem typowych materiałów ogniotrwałych, to jest tlenku glinu, tlenku magnezu oraz grafitu. Badania wykonano metodą kropli leżącej, przy użyciu mikroskopu wysokotemperaturowego sprzężonego z kamerą i komputerem.

Opis:: Wyznaczanie swobodnej energii powierzchniowej ciał stałych z wykorzystaniem modelami Wu, Van Ossa, Owensa-Wendta-Rabela-Kaelble’a lub Fowkesa jest bardzo pracochłonną procedurą badawczą ze względu na konieczność wykonania pomiarów kątów zwilżania dla kilku cieczy modelowych (od 3 do 5). Kąt zwilżania może być wyznaczany metodą płytkową Wilhelmiego lub metodą osadzanej kropli. Aby uprościć i przyspieszyć szacowanie SFE nowo uzyskiwanych powłok PVD, zastosowano metody: Roberson, Neumanna oraz Neumanna-Kwoka wyznaczania swobodnej energii powierzchniowej ciał stałych. Metody te wymagają użycia tylko jednej cieczy modelowej do pomiaru kąta zwilżania. Przeprowadzono badania w celu doboru metody pomiaru kąta zwilżania oraz wyboru najlepszej cieczy modelowej, dla której wartości SFE powłok będą zbliżone do wartości otrzymanych dla modelu wymagającego użycia kilku cieczy. Pomimo że metoda płytkowa Wilhelmiego jest bardziej precyzyjną metodą pomiaru kąta zwilżania, to wyniki SFE powłok uzyskiwane dla kątów zmierzonych metodą osadzanej kropli lepiej realizują założenia pracy. Dlatego wybrano tę metodę pomiaru kąta zwilżania. Natomiast ciecze polarne, takie jak woda, formaldehyd czy anilina najlepiej spełniały założenie, że wartość SFE powłoki wyznaczona dla jednej cieczy jest zbliżona do wartości SFE wyznaczanej z użyciem kilku cieczy modelowych.
Determination of surface free energy of solid using Wu, Van Oss, Owens-Wendt- Rabel- Kaelble'a or Fowkes models is a laborious research procedure, due to the need of carrying out measurements of contact angles for different model liquids (3 to 5). A contact angle can be determined by the Wilhelmy plate method or sessile drop method. The Roberson, Neumann and Neumann-Kwok methods of determining the surface free energy of solids were applied to simplify and to accelerate the process of the estimation of SFE for newly obtained PVD coating. These methods require the use of only one model liquid to measure the contact angle. The research was conducted in order to select the method of measuring the contact angle and to choose the best liquid for which the SFE of coatings will be similar to the values obtained for the model that requires the use of several liquids. Although the Wilhelmy plate method is a more precise method of measuring the contact angle, the sessile drop method fulfilled better formed assumptions, which were calculated from the result of the SFE of coatings that were obtained for contact angle by the use of the suggested method. Therefore, the sessile drop was the chosen method for measuring the contact angle. On the other hand, polar liquids such as water, formaldehyde, and aniline best met the formed assumption that the value of the SFE of coatings determined for one liquid is close to the SFE obtained by the means of several model liquids.
