Opis:
The hereby paper describes a brief history of fall and rise of Polish shipbuilding industry in the 21st century and confronts stereotypes about it using data available from variety of statistical sources as well as impressions regarding its current and future condition presented by different authors, including industry representatives. The main goal of the article is the confrontation of political statement with the statistical data and current sectoral trends within the shipbuilding industry in Poland. Firstly, we introduce a historical background in a scope of economic transition in Poland. Then, socio-political issues are addressed together with economic condition using statistical data. Lastly, the newest trends and perspectives are analyzed. Eventually, we come to conclusion that despite encountering great difficulties and arguments about its collapse from political actors, shipbuilding sector did manage to retain its strong position in Polish economy.

Opis:
In this paper problems of dimensional control in the building process of large steel structures are discussed. Results are presented of the research aimed at the improving of dimensional quality of prefabricated ship hull structures built in enterprises of medium – or low- level technological support. Problems of dimensional control in building process of large steel structures are highlighted. A solution is proposed of dynamical control of measurement operations as well as their optimization with taking into account current production process parameters. An example of calculations carried out in the frame of the presented solution is also attached.

This part is continuation of PART II. Analytic solutions for the temperature distribution in HAZ – presented in the previous part of this article are transformed for computer calculation with used Mathcad programme. There are established algorithms in moving and stationary systems for thermal cycle calculating. Finally, a few analytical examples with use of C-I-N and D-E models are demonstrated.

Opis:
This part is continuation of PART I. The basis of this analytic solution are the Fourier - Kirchhoff partial differential equation with appropriated boundary conditions. For a plate with optional thickness, the radiative heat transfer on both surfaces is taken into account. It is assumed that moving C-I-N or D-E heat sources during a very short period of time, generate an impulse of energy inducing an instantaneous thermal field in the plate area and the analytic solution is received by used Fourier transformation. These fields are being continuously summed up to obtain resultant thermal field ... . Finally, the temperature fields generated by C-I-N and D-E heat sources in both stationary and moving co-ordinates systems are established.

The article uses the analytical equation for the work function of metals, made by one of the authors, to study the structure of aluminum alloys, which are increasingly used in the shipbuilding industry. For example, of selected alloys Al-Cu, Al-Ta and Al-Ti are presented graphically changes in work function depending on the percentage composition of the alloy. Also presented an equation that allows to evaluate the work function for multicomponent alloys.

Opis:
The study aims to classify port cities in Poland in terms of the development of their industrial functions and those in their immediate surroundings. Industrial plants currently operating in the vicinity of seaports were identified in the area where the port and its industrial districts have developed. Data on the volume of transhipments in individual ports, the number of manufacturing entities in gminas, including ports themselves, and on employment in industry in powiats where seaports are located, were used. The research includes both the industry directly related to the maritime economy, including shipbuilding and fish processing, as well as industrial enterprises located there for economic reasons following classical location theories. Seaports in Poland, due to the level of industrial development, can be divided into four groups: with a developed and diverse industry (Gdańsk and Szczecin), with one sector dominating (Gdynia, Police, Elbląg), with a small shipbuilding industry and factories operating for the needs of fisheries (Świnoujście, Kołobrzeg, Władysławowo, Ustka, Łeba), without any developed industry (others).

Opis:
The aim of the article is a synthetic presentation of the complex process of financing investments related to shipbuilding and purchase. The first part presents the concept of shipbuilding cycles and the relationship between the shipbuilding industry and the shipping market. The paper then reviews the concepts and literature related to the shipbuilding industry, shipbuilding financing, and ship purchase. Lastly, the current state of the shipbuilding market is described. The results of the analysis indicates possibilities of financing the purchase of new vessels including mortgage bonds.

The welding process is the basic technique of joining in the shipbuilding industry. This method generates welding distortions that cause a lot of problems during the manufacturing process due to both the time and cost of straightening as well as their influence on later stages of production. Proper preparation of welding processes plays a growing role in the shipbuilding industry and the development of calculating tools is being observed. The paper presents a review and critical analysis of numerical methods for the assessment of welding distortion.

Opis:
The paper describes a new curriculum for teaching computing methods in mechanics and design developed at Faculty of Ocean Engineering and Ship Technology, Gdańsk University of Technology, which has been introduced beginning from summer semester 2005. The new specialization covers the last 5 semesters (6 - 10) of the unified M.Sc. course in Ocean Technology. All courses of the new specialization are given in English. The objective of the new curriculum is to educate engineers skilful in applying modern modelling technologies for practical solving problems of structure and fluid mechanics, heat transfer and automatic control in the area of marine industry. The curriculum has been endorsed by General Electric (GE) as unique, novel and advanced one - moreover the company took patronage over the specialization. Similar encouragement has been obtained from PRS, LR, ABB and UGS when the idea of the course was presented on a special seminar.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of research on adhesive joints durability properties of ship austenitic steel done with the use of the latest adhesives – glues: a composite one from Belzona company, described as 1111 and 1212 as well as a Hysol 9466 adhesive, produced by Hysol. The 1.4301 (304) and 1.3964 (2xx) steels used for shipbuilding were single-lap adhesive joint, with varying degree of edges’ chamfering and offsetting (with a deflection). This type of alternative connections will provide protection and temporary structure’s protection in case of emergency cracking (due to corrosion or an impact) of the examined steel or welded joints of the ship’s construction and hull’s sheathings. The adhesive joints of the tested steel were made in laboratory conditions (according to the technological card) as well as outside the laboratory, hereinafter called as the emergency ones with the use of Belzon 1212. Adhesive joints of 304 and 2xx steel using Hysol 9466 adhesive made in laboratory conditions showed better durability properties than the ones made with the use of Belzona 1111 composite. However, in case of emergency connections the bonding strength as well as the bonding time (hardening) are important factors. The use of the special Belzona 1212 (for wet surfaces) gives a relatively good durability of approx. 20MPa with a much shorter (up to 20 minutes) hardening time and does not require such an accurate surface preparation as the adhesive joints made with the use of Hysol 9466.
