Opis:: This article discusses a fragment of an empirical study on the learning of adults participating in various forms of rebellion such as manifestations, demonstrations, urban activism and many others. Several interviewees from Spain pointed out the importance of specific places in their practices of rebellion and learning. These ‘significant places’ could be an important context of people’s lifelong learning. They mediate activities, build social relationships, produce norms, values and – what is crucial from the point of view of biographical research – construct the identities of rebels.

Opis:: For the first time since the reform of canon law in 1983, the terminology regarding relics was included in an official document of the Holy See. The Instruction distinguishes between significant and non-significant relics. Referring to the decrees of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, it shows the reasons why this particular division was rightly introduced. The bishop of the diocese or eparchy where the mortal remains are preserved is competent to perform all the possible procedures on them, provided he has previously obtained the consent of the heirs and the consent of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (different variants are possible). Apart from a tribunal, the bishop nominates expert pathologists to perform technical procedures and two witnesses. The article discusses the procedures of canonical recognition of the remains, extraction of fragments in case of the imminent beatification, and some final operations.

Opis:: This paper examines how fleeting experiences exert a disproportionately powerful effect on the language learning motivation and behavior of university students. A thematic analysis of interview data is used to show how significant incidents have two principal consequences. The first, anagnorisis, is an immediate, revelatory change in beliefs about language learning. The second, narrative incorporation, is a process through which the memory of the incident and/or its anagnorisis becomes a constituent of self-narratives. It is argued that the significant incident is best understood not as an external influence on motivation, but as a component of the learner’s worldview.

Opis:: The Significant Market Power Act (SMPA) adopted in 2009 regulates the assessment of, and the prevention of, the abuse of market power in the sale of agricultural and food products. The Act generated many controversies from the outset, survived legislative proposals for its abolition, to be finally amended in 2016. However, this kind of legislation failed to solve most of the problems and even managed to create additional controversies. The new amendment formally simplified the actual wording of the SMPA by transposing its numerous earlier appendixes, which contained an exemplary list of prohibited forms of SMP abuse, to the actual text of the Act. It also improved transparency and clarity with respect to its earlier vague and ambiguous terminology. At the same time, the amendment seriously modified the scope and principal philosophy of the SMPA by removing the previously required “substantial detriment to economic competition” as the pre-condition of the applicability of the Act. However, since the enforcement of the SMPA falls into the scope of the activities of the Czech Office for Protection of Economic Competition (in Czech Úřad pro ochranu hospodářské soutěže, UOHS), the concerns and doubts of the business community continue to grow whether this form of regulation is appropriate after the modification of the concept.
La Loi sur les pouvoirs de marchés significatifs (« SMPA ») adoptée en 2009 réglemente l'évaluation et la prévention de l'abus de pouvoir de marché dans la vente de produits agricoles et alimentaires. Cette loi a provoqué de nombreuses controverses dès le début, a survécu les propositions législatives pour son abolition pour être finalement modifiée en 2016. Cependant, cette législation non seulement n'a pas réussi à résoudre la plupart des problèmes, mais a provoqué des controverses supplémentaires. Le nouvel amendement a simplifié le language du « SMPA » par la transposition de ses nombreuses annexes antérieures, qui ont contenu la liste exemplaire des abus interdites de « SMPA » au texte de la Loi. Il a également amélioré la transparence et la clarté par rapport à la terminologie vague et ambiguë antérieure du « SMPA ». En même temps, l'amendement a modifié sérieusement la portée et la philosophie principale du « SMPA » par la suppression de notion de « préjudice substantiel à la concurrence économique » qui a constitué précédemment une condition préalable de l’application de la Loi. Toutefois, vue que l'application du “SMPA” entre dans le cadre des compétences de l’Autorité de la concurrence tchèque (en tchèque : Úřad pro ochranu hospodářské soutěže, UOHS), les préoccupations et les doutes du business si cette réglementation est appropriée après la modification du concept continuent à monter.

Opis:: We współczesnych społeczeństwach coraz rzadziej mamy do czynienia z rodzinami wielopokoleniowymi, standardem zaś są rodziny nuklearne, a zatem wąskie systemy obejmujące podsystem rodzicielski i dziecięcy. Gdy w takiej strukturze dochodzi do zakłóceń, kryzysów są to sytuacje sprzyjające mechanizmowi odwracania ról (parentyfikacji). Polega on na czerpaniu przez system z dostępnych mu zasobów, a więc przenoszeniu odpowiedzialności i zadań przynależnych dorosłym na dzieci. Przedmiotem niniejszego opracowania jest szersze postrzeganie rodziny, uwzględniające jej otoczenie, a więc dziadków. Na podstawie narracji autobiograficznych ludzi, którzy doświadczyli parentyfikacji w dzieciństwie, dokonano rekonstrukcji i analizy ich roli jako osób znaczących dla wnuków. Dziadkowie wspierali swoich wnuków, pełnili funkcję strażników rodziny, zapewniali poczucie bezpieczeństwa, wyposażając osoby parentyfikowane w pozytywne doświadczenia i wspomnienia związane z dzieciństwem.
In modern societies, extended families are less frequent, while nuclear families are the norm, which is why narrow systems include parent-and-child subsystems. When disturbances and crises arise in such a structure, these situations are conducive to the mechanism of role reversal (parentification). It involves the system’s drawing from the resources available to it and thus transferring to children the responsibility and tasks that belong to adults. The subject of this study is a broader perception of the family taking into account its surroundings, especially grandparents. Based on the autobiographical narratives of individuals who experienced parentification in childhood, the reconstruction and analysis of their role as people of significance to their grandchildren was made. Grandparents supported their grandchildren, acted as guardians of the family, and ensured a sense of security, endowing parentified individuals with positive experiences and childhood memories.

Opis:: Artykuł zestawia 4’33’’ (1952) Johna Cage’a i Zen for Film (1964) Nam June Paika – dwa przełomowe utwory amerykańskiej awangardy. Andrzej Pitrus próbuje uchwycić rodzaj dialogu, jaki został nawiązany przez dwóch artystów wprowadzających do swego artystycznego języka elementy aleatoryczne. Autor omawia także kwestie związane z odwołaniem się do „znaczącej pustki”, ta zaś – zgodnie z tradycją zen – stanowi rodzaj przestrzeni, w której słuchacz i widz mogą budować własne sensy i realizować doświadczenia odbiorcze. Obydwie prace niczego odbiorcy nie narzucają: Zen jest wskazówką. Twórcy nie proponują żadnych zamkniętych znaczeń, zadowalając się swoiście rozumianym artystycznym koanem. Ich dzieła nie zawierają NIC, lecz niewątpliwie uruchamiają niekończący się ciąg skojarzeń i zapewne jeszcze długo będą stanowić inspirację dla interpretatorów.
The article summarizes 4’33’’ (1952) by John Cage and Zen for Film (1964) by Nam June Paik – two groundbreaking works of the American avant-garde. Andrzej Pitrus tries to capture the kind of dialogue established between the two artists who introduced into their artistic language aleatoric elements. The author also discusses issues related to the reference to a “significant void”, and this – in the tradition of Zen – is a kind of space where the listener and the viewer may build their own senses and realise the experience of perception. Both works do not impose anything on the viewer – Zen is just a suggestion. The artists do not propose any closed interpretation, and are satisfied by a specifically understood artistic koan. Their works contain NOTHING, yet they trigger an endless string of associations, and are sure to inspire interpreters for a long time to come.

Opis:: Autorka koncentruje się na „znaczących ujęciach” w popularnym (w opozycji do bieguna heavy weight) wariancie puzzle films. Ujęcie jest identyfikowane jako znaczące, jeśli pełni uprzywilejowaną rolę w strukturze tekstu filmowego. Aby uchwycić znaczenie (w aspekcie wytwarzania sensów) analizowanego ujęcia, autorka skupia się na jego dwóch fundamentalnych funkcjach: rozpoznania (prowadzącego do „od-opowiedzenia” i rekontekstualizacji fabuły) i zawieszenia (otwierającego tekst na ambiwalentne i sprzeczne interpretacje). Artykuł został zainspirowany pracami Kristin Thompson poświęconymi dominancie definiowanej jako element jednoczący wszystkie aspekty dzieła. Według Thompson niespodzianka rządzi formą – od całościowego kształtu opowiadania aż po poziom pojedynczego zdania. Autorka dowodzi, że „niespodzianka” stanowi dominantę w puzzle films, a „pojedyncze zdanie” – na poziomie metaforycznym – może być postrzegane jako ekwiwalent ujęcia filmowego. Wybrane filmy zostały umieszczone w kontekście kognitywizmu (Bordwell, Thompson) i narratologii (McHale).
The article focuses on the “significant shot” in the popular (as opposed to heavy weight) variant of puzzle films. The shot is identified as significant if it performs a prominent role in the structure of a film text. To capture its significance (in the aspect of meaning-making), the author focuses on its two fundamental functions: recognition (leading to “re-telling” and re-contextualisation of the story) and suspension (opening the text to ambivalent and contradicting interpretations). The text has been inspired by Kristin Thompson’s writings on the dominant defined as an element that unifies all aspects of a work. According to Thompson, surprise governs form – from the overall shape of the plot to the level of the individual sentence. The article argues that “surprise” is the dominant in puzzle films and “the individual sentence” – on the metaphorical level – may be perceived as the equivalent of the film shot. Selected films are positioned in the theoretical frameworks of cognitivism (Thompson, Bordwell) and narratology (McHale).

European citizenship as new social construct : implications for construction of collective identity in contemporary Europe

Opis:: With the adoption of the principle of European citizenship in the Treaty of Maastricht a scholarly debate has been accelerated as to whether the concept and substance of this fundamental principle depicting the character of European collective identity has been elaborated to the extent that we can clearly see the iunctim between expected European demos-building function and day-to-day practice verified by participation of EU citizens in democratic life of the Union. In order to be able to answer such question one should define precisely the scope of the very notion of European identity as it has been the subject of permanent disagreement among scholars dealing with the nexus between democracy, citizenship and identity in the EU. Following this conceptual clarification I will then outline the two leading working hypotheses of this analysis, namely: European identity is being constructed in a process of symbolic othering. European 'we feeling' is primarily though not exclusively defined in opposition to significant others; and European identity is discursively constructed collective identity based on European citizenship.

Opis:: Forests have several pools that acts as carbon sink to atmospheric carbon which is released by anthropogenic causes. Leaf litter is one of those very important pools whose role in nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration cannot be overemphasized. This study was conducted to develop equations for carbon stored in leaf litter of Tectona grandis using tree growth characteristics as explanatory variables. Data was collected from four 20 m × 20 m sample plots which were randomly selected. Within each plots, four litter traps were set to collect leaf litter on a weekly basis. The collected litter was further taken to the laboratory for carbon analysis. The tree growth variables measured in the plots were processed into suitable form for statistical analyses using descriptive statistics in form of tables, charts and graphs and inferential statistics using correlation and regression analysis. Different equation were developed and tried with different tree growth characteristics with a view to select the best equation among the simulated ones. The equation with a highest coefficient of determination (R2) and lowest standard error of estimate (SEE) was selected as the best fit. The average leaf litters produced per day ranged from 2.26g/m2 to 7.67g/m2, the maximum and minimum values of carbon stored in the studied species was 63%, 59% respectively. All the tried equations were significant and fit the data set well. The result showed that the logarithm equation has the highest R2 and lowest SEE values and was therefore selected as the best model. Result from the validated models showed that all tried equations except the exponential equation were good for prediction. Conclusively, the ability of the forest to sequester carbon is a function of the biomass production which is linked to the litter fall produced by the system. Since litter fall represent a major flux for the transfer of carbon and other nutrients between the vegetation and soil, it should therefore not be altered in order not to have an effect on below ground processes. Even though the scope of this study only covers a very small area and sample of the Nigeria forest, it is still very important for prediction of leaf litter carbon and hence, served as a tool for sustainable forest management.
