Opis:
Apart from intention tremor essential tremor (ET) patients may display other cerebellar signs, like dysmetria or tandem gait disturbances as well as parkinsonian signs like resting tremor, cogwheel sign, subtle bradykinesia. Previous reports claimed the occurrence of the eye movement abnormalities characteristic for dysfunction of cerebellar dorsal vermis in ET patients with concomitant cerebellar signs. There are no previous reports evaluating the eye movement abnormalities in ET patients with concomitant parkinsonian signs. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the occurrence of parkinsonian and cerebellar signs and the oculomotor abnormalities in ET patients. Method: Fifty ET patients including 6 (12.0%) patients with concomitant parkinsonian signs (ET-P), 20 (40.0%) patients with cerebellar signs (ET-C), 7 (14.0%) with mixed parkinsonian and cerebellar signs (ET-M), 17 (34.0%) patients with the only tremor (ET-T) together with 42 healthy controls were included to the study. Reflexive, pace-induced and cued saccades were recorded using Saccadometer Advanced. Smooth pursuit and fixation were tested using EOG. Results: Latency of pace-induced saccades was significantly longer in ET-C and ET-M patients compared to ET-T and ET-P patients. Latency of cued saccades was significantly longer in ET-M patients compared to ET-T. There were no significant differences of the eye movement parameters between ET-P patients compared to ET-T patients. Conclusion: In ET patient with concomitant cerebellar signs prolonged volitional saccades latency was detected. There are no particular differences in the eye movements in ET patients with concomitant parkinsonian signs compared to ET patients without concomitant signs.

Study on the relationship between drivers personal characters and non-standard traffic signs comprehensibility
Autorzy:

Opis:
Drivers' incorrect perception and interpretation of the road space are among reasons for human errors. Proper road markings are elements improving perception of road space. Their effectiveness relies on traffic participants receiving the provided information correctly. The range of signs used is constantly expanding and unusual situations in traffic require use of non-standard signs or an unusual combination of existing standard signs. The aim of this study was to explore the level of comprehensibility of four different types of non-standard signs. The relationship between the level of comprehensibility of these signs and personality traits of the drivers was also studied. A total of 369 drivers were tested using a questionnaire to analyze the traffic signs comprehensibility and Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). The obtained results indicate that symbolic signs, unlike symbolic and text ones, are much better comprehended by drivers. Men comprehend the significance of non-standard symbolic regulatory signs better than women. Higher level of comprehensibility of symbolic and text regulatory signs is shown by older, better educated drivers and professional drivers. The study found there is a link between personality traits of the driver and the comprehensibility of symbolic regulatory signs.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to clarify and refine the ways of understanding two basic types of translation: from one language into another ethnic language (translation proper) – i.e. following the principles of translating homo- geneous systems of signs – and from one system of signs to another, e.g. verbal to iconic, or vice versa, which is sometimes called transmutation. Therefore, the starting point for the discussion is Roman Jakobson’s well-known typology of translation, which also took into account cases of intralingual translation within the same language, called rewording. However, the article mainly focuses on various cases of intersemiotic translation and thus transmutation, meaning situations where a text expressed in one system of signs is translated into a system of a different nature. The primary research question concerns what is actually being translated in such a situation and how this type of translation differs from a typical language-to-language translation. The article is chiefly theoretical, and the examples concern the cases of translating verbal signs into iconic ones, such as the rules governing traffic into a road sign, the translation of an image (a painting, photography) into a literary text (ekphrasis and its varieties), and a film adaptation. The equivalence of codes secures the adequacy of a linguistic translation. In the case of ekphrasis, the image is usually replaced by a verbal narrative, and in a film adaptation, the type and sequence of iconic signs must simply be invented because these sign systems are not directly equivalent, as Benveniste and Lotman believe. Examples that illustrate the main theses of the article are Jacek Kaczmarski’s art-inspired songs, several film adaptations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth (Polański, Kurosawa), and Agnieszka Holland’s film adaptation (Pokot [Spoor]) of one of Olga Tokarczuk’s novels.

Opis:
The importance of safety comes from the responsibility towards protecting the vulnerable road users, who seem to be the victims in most road crashes. Thus, authorities tend to focus on reducing the travelling speed of the vehicles, whereas some road users may consider the move to interfere with mobility. In this study, a case study in Perth’s two roads was conducted to compare two engineering treatments of speed reductions on these two busy shopping strips. The study aim is to illustrate the effect of using the electronic flashing signs rather than the standard signs in terms of speeding reduction and harm minimisation. Crash data were analysed and supported the safety benefits of the electronic flashing signs. Authorities have measured the reduction of the travelling speeds of vehicles and found it to be encouraging. There are clear, positive safety benefits from the study in terms of engineering and enforcement measures.

Opis:
The article discusses the application of the principles of diacritical orthography in writing Czech words in the Latin treatise Orthographia Bohemica which contains instructions on how digraphs in Czech written texts should be replaced by diacritical signs. While many scholars consider Master Jan Hus to be the author, the treatise was copied by Kříž z Telče (Crux of Telč), a teacher and a priest, by hand into his manuscript convolute at the end of the 1450s. However, Kříž failed to write down the exemplary Czech words exactly according to the instructions in the treatise. At first sight, the signs above the letters seem chaotic and inaccurate. In medieval writings, signs carried out two main functions: first, a sign only accentuated a particular character (sign of non-semantic accentuation) and distinguished it from other, formally similar graphemes (e.g. <ẏ> versus ). Secondly, a sign provided a character with a different meaning (a diacritical sign) and a glyph with a sign represented a phoneme different than a glyph without a sign (e.g. versus <ž>). An orthographic analysis of some Czech biblical manuscripts from both the first and the second half of the 15th century has revealed that scribes used these two systems of accentuation at the same time and combined them. That is why the c /t͡ s/ and č /t͡ ʃ/ consonants recorded in the Orthogpraphia Bohemica treatise as either or <ċ> or <č> graphemes cannot be considered a simple scribe’s mistake but rather, a reflection of a different scribal usage.

Introduction. Myiasis is caused by larvae of flies infesting animal or human tissues and organs. Aim. In this report we present 2 cases of external ophthalmomyiasis by sheep botfly. Description of the cases. We report a case of two patients who presented with a history of foreign body sensation in the left and the right eye respectively. Slit lamp examination revealed larvae of Oestrus ovis (sheep botfly). In both cases, there was no contact history with sheep or goats. Signs of conjunctival inflammation and corneal involvement were absent in both cases. In most of the previous reports, corneal and conjunctival inflammation was present. Conclusion. Treatment for external ophthalmomyiasis is based on larvae removal and application of topical antibiotics and steroids.

The author in the article analyses the marking of UK public transport stops on the ex ample of photographic documentation. The images were taken in two cities: London and York and the Welsh town of Betws-y-coed. e author takes a look at the network of land roads and, in particular, stops that stand out from the urban landscape. They are key elements of a complex network of interconnections developing over the centuries. Showing them in a historical perspective reveals the dynamics of change related to the development of technology, the evolution of transport models driven by the growing demand for mobility. The development, but also the standardisation of public stop signs encourages a better distribution of information and, consequently, more e¢cient travel planning, thus blending in with the cultural landscape of cities.

Opis:
Sign language is a natural language with its own vocabulary and its own grammar. It has a visual - spatial character and, in accordance with the Sign Language Act, has been recognized as a full-fledged means of communication between deaf and hearing people. Sign language is a combination of gestures with facial expressions, emotions expressed by a sender and, if possible, with words. The trends of the local labor market indicate the demand for employees in the sector of certain medical professions. Medical schools meet the demand by offering education in health-related professions. A post-secondary school graduate working with a hearing impaired patient, should have appropriate communication skills in the use of sign language. Employers in places such as hospitals, medical clinics, nurseries, dental offices, massage parlours and beauty salons are increasingly looking for staff who know sign language. In accordance with the amendment to the Regulation of the Ministry of National Education, students of all fields of study at the Post – Secondary School – Medical Vocational Study in Chełm pursue sign language classes in order to obtain the intended learning outcomes from the core curriculum,,the student uses sign language”. Thanks to the knowledge of sign language, students can improve their qualifications and be professionals in their profession. Learning sign language requires a lot of commitment, patience, motivation, continuous work and daily repetition of learned messages. Sign language is difficult, or rather impossible to learn from a book, because illustrations are not always able to reflect mavement. Online courses are helpful, but they are not a substitute for contact with a teacher who will correct on an ongoing basis, provide valuable tips and make the sign language understandable. So, an effective way to learn sign language is to take lessons with someone who uses this language.

Opis:
The present paper is an attempt supplying proofs that gestural signs are almost like standard linguistic signs. It is claimed that language gestures exhibit numerous properties of classical linguistic signs conceived of as in the works of de Saussure. The dividing line between the two pertains, in essence, to the type of motivation between the signifier and the signified, found within gestural, but not linguistic signs. There is a conspicuous connection between the two aspects of the sign within various kinds of gestures, including volitional ones (most akin to speech acts or „la parole” of the Saussure) as well as within those which are not performed on purpose (called „sylinguistic” gestures).
