Opis:
In this work a new putty-like explosive containing 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was prepared and its properties were studied. The plasticity and the decomposition temperature of the explosive were determined. The sensitivity to friction, impact, shock wave and internal ignition were tested. The heats of combustion and explosion of the formulation were also measured. The diameter and critical layer as well as the detonation velocity of charges of different diameters were determined. The research results obtained were analyzed.

Opis:
Pomimo niepohamowanego rozwoju w dziedzinie inżynierii materiałowej oraz technologii wytwarzania w XXI wieku nadal niezastąpiona jest manualna praca człowieka. Poniższy artykuł przedstawia zakres prac związanych z wykonaniem gipsowej kopii odlewu artystycznego pt. „Bachantka na panterze”, powstałego w 1853 roku na podstawie rzeźby T. E. Kalide, znanego artysty – odlewnika. Artykuł unaocznia problemy związane z wykonaniem matrycy na wielopłaszczyznowy odlew bez możliwości podzielenia go na części, wskazuje kryteria doboru użytych podczas pracy materiałów w taki sposób, aby nie uszkodzić chemicznie lub mechanicznie oryginału. Dodatkowo dokonano weryfikacji metodologii wykonania odlewu w celu wyeliminowania niedolewów, zapowietrzeń i innych wad odlewniczych. Podczas pracy wykonano wieloczęściową, elastyczną matrycę silikonową zabezpieczoną przed odkształceniami za pomocą pancerza gipsowego. Kopię „Bachantki na panterze” wykonano z gipsu protetycznego IV klasy twardości a następnie, w celu nadania jej zbliżonych do oryginału walorów wizualnych, pomalowano ją farbą akrylową imitującą mosiądz. Zgodność z oryginałem została określona przez zleceniodawcę na poziomie 99% co w przypadku kopii daje wynik bardzo dobry. Wykonana matryca elastyczna może posłużyć w przyszłości do wykonania kolejnej kopii.
Though unrestrained development of material engineering and manufacturing technology in XXI century manual labor of men is still irreplaceable. The article presents the case of manufacturing of plaster cast copy of art casting „Bachantka na panterze”, created in 1853 based on sculpture by T. E. Kalide, well known artist - foundry man. The article presents problems of making multidimensional matrix on indecomposable cast, points the materials selection criteria which can be safely used during the work, ensuring that any mechanical or chemical damage of original cast is made. Additionally verification of casting methodology was made to eliminate misruns, gaseous pores and other casting defects. During the work multidimensional, flexible, silicon matrix was made secured from deformation by gypsum armor. The copy of „Bachantka na panterze” was made of prosthetic gypsum of IVth class hardness, painted with acrylic paint imitating brass color to look like original one. The compliance with the original casting was estimated at 99% by the founding institution, what is a very good result. The matrix can be used in future to make another copy.

The purpose of this study was to examine the in vitro dehydration characteristics of new and worn conventional and silicone-hydrogel contact lenses. Four contact lens materials were investigated: three conventional hydrogels (etafilcon, nelfilcon, omafilcon) and one silicone-hydrogel (narafilcon). Gravimetric data were obtained with analytical balance with 1 min intervals. Quantitative parameters of water content and dehydration rate were calculated allowing quantitative description of dehydration process. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to monitor changes in water states in samples studied. As expected, dehydration behavior of each material is different in terms of mean dehydration rate values and phases of dehydration. Gravimetric data allowed us to distinguish three phases of dehydration. Interestingly, the effect of the osmolality of storing solutions on dehydration was found – lenses stored in hyperosmotic solutions needed more time to achieve equilibrium with the environment. Effect of wearing on dehydration patterns and water properties was confirmed. In worn samples, a decrease in water content was observed. Additionally, there was a change in water structure after 6 h of wearing in all lenses studied. This behavior may be ascribed to tear film components deposition and changes in surface wettability that appear during wearing.

The influence of polymeric matrices on the physical properties and stability of polymer bonded explosives based on FOX-7 (1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethene) and HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane) was investigated. Samples of explosives were prepared with different polymeric additives e.g. nonylphenylpolyoxyethyleneglycol ethers (ROKAFENOL), silicone greases and poly(3-methyl-3-nitroxymethyloxetane) (Poly(NIMMO)). The mass ratio of polymeric matrices to explosives was determined experimentally in order to obtain plastic samples stable at room temperature. The most promising products were tested for sensitivity to mechanical and thermal stimuli. Determinations of the critical diameter and detonation velocity were also performed. The use of silicone grease in the mixture containing Poly(NIMMO) gave the most desirable results, that is to say a combination of high performance and high stability.

Opis:
In recent years, Polymer Bonded Explosives (PBX) have been used in a wide variety of military applications. Many different kinds of polymers are used for such explosive formulations. This component determines both the preparation method and the properties of a PBX. In this paper, results are presented of studies on the preparation and testing of explosive compositions based on pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN, penthrite) and silicone rubber. These studies were undertaken to obtain elastic formulations of PBXs. Therefore, the possibility of applying a silicone rubber as a component of the composition was checked. In the first stage of this study, several compositions were prepared in order to choose the optimal mixture ratio with respect to cohesion of the explosive. For this purpose, a new method using the Brookfield Texture Analyser was developed. Subsequently, compatibility tests using thermal analysis methods were carried out. The best of composition was subjected to tests for determining its physicochemical and explosive characteristics.

This study shows the sensitivity of using silicone rubber passive sampler (SR-PS) and gas chromatography with mass spectrometer (GC-MS) detection for monitoring and identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water systems. The analysis was performed for eighteen PAHs compounds after pre-concentration using Soxhlet extraction method. By comparison, a total of 13 PAHs were detected in the spot water samples, of which none was quantifiable. The freely dissolved PAH concentrations were found to range from 0.17 ng/L to 0.76 ng/L at Ugieriver. The use of fluorine d10 as Performance reference compound (PRC) gives a sampling rates of 8.14 (L/day) for silicone rubber passive samplers. Analysis of PAHs concentrations suggest the contaminants are mainly from pyrolytic sources. Overall it can be concluded that SR-PS are viable alternatives in the environmental monitoring of PAHs.

Opis:
A new CaCO3-SiO2 composite with core-shell structure was successfully prepared by mechano-chemistry method (MCM). SEM and FTIR indicated that SiO2 particles were homogeneously immobilized on the surface of CaCO3. The well dispersion of this CaCO3-SiO2 composite into silicone rubber can not only reduce the usage amount of SiO2, but also improve the mechanical properties of silicone rubber. By the calculation, the theoretical numbers of the SiO2 particles is about 10 times as large as that of CaCO3 particles in the CaCO3-SiO2 composite. Mixing CaCO3-SiO2 composite in silicone rubber can enhance the breaking strength of the silicone rubber about 18% as high as that when mixing the pure SiO2. And the elongation at break is about 14% less than that of adding the pure SiO2 sample.

Opis:
The paper presents results of investigations of basic material properties of novel composites based on silicone resin and carbon nanotubes as a filler. The motivation for the research is a need for materials which provide better mechanical properties than standard wet Ag/AgCl electrodes. However, a critical issue is also obtaining defined electrical characteristics in order to preserve an ability to effectively record biomedical signals such as electrocardiography (ECG). Within the introduction chapter, related researches and the current state-of-the-art in the context of dry electrodes technology were described. In the next step technological aspects of components processing and forming as well as the morphology of substrates used in the research were presented. Thermally-cured silicone resin was utilized to obtain elastic properties of the resulting material. The carbon nanotubes (CNT) were chosen as a conductive medium which provides defined electrical impedance. A developed technological process allowed to deliver samples of reproducible structure and properties. In the next chapter, methods and results of conducted experiments involving electrical, mechanical and thermal examination were presented. Finally, achieved outcomes are promising in the context of improvements of the designed composite. Especially the conductivity below 100 Ohms constitutes a significant motivation for further research in the field of dry electrodes for biosignals acquisition.

Za pomocą techniki PIV zmierzono i porównano prędkości kropel oleju w wodzie i prędkości wody w układzie jednofazowym. Badania przeprowadzono w mieszalniku zbiornikowym z mieszadłem Rushtona. Badania wykazały maksymalną różnicę w prędkościach rzędu 30% w okolicy mieszadła oraz porównywalne wartości szybkości dyssypacji energii. Przy niskich ułamkach objętościowych fazy rozproszonej, średnice kropel można przewidywać wykorzystując modele CFD dla układów jednofazowych.
Velocities of oil drops in emulsion and water in a homogeneous system were measured using PIV technique. Investigations were carried out in a tank equipped with the Rushton turbine. The maximum difference between velocities was observed close to the impeller and was equal to 30%. However, there was no difference in values of energy dissipation rate in both systems. For a low dispersed phase volume fraction, drop diameters can be predicted using CDF models for a homogeneous system.

The combined influence of silicon content and oxygen concentration on silicon-containing steels was investigated, via a heating route similar to that applied in the industrial reheating process, using a Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer (STA). Four different oxygen concentrations and three different isothermal holding times were designed. The results show that the effect of silicon on the mass gain depends on the oxygen concentration and the oxidation time. The mass gain of low-silicon steel is greater than that of high-silicon steel at 1260°C in the oxygen concentrations of 1.0 vol.% and 2.0 vol.%, even when the isothermal holding time is 90 minutes. However, there is a critical time point for mass gain in oxygen concentrations ≥3.0 vol.%. The mass gain of lowsilicon steel is greater before and smaller after this critical point. The critical time is deferred with decreasing oxygen concentration.
