Opis:
Suitability of silver birch bark as a natural source for dyeing cotton. The study was carried out on dyeing cotton fabric with silver birch bark extract without a mordant and with the use of mordants - oxalic acid and inorganic salts of aluminum, tin, iron and copper. The color of the fabric was determined in the CIE L*a*b* system. Pale orange to salmon shades were obtained. In the case of iron and copper, a significantly different color was obtained, dark grayish and rusty, respectively. Color fastness tests were carried out using hot water, mineral acid, mild and hot washing, dry cleaning and natural exposure to sunlight. Excellent resistance to dry cleaning and mild and hot washing was found, as well as good resistance to mineral acid. The dyed fabric had the weakest, although still quite good, resistance to sunlight.
Przydatność kory brzozy brodawkowatej jako naturalnego surowca do barwienia bawełny. Przeprowadzono badanie barwienia tkaniny bawełnianej ekstraktem z kory brzozy brodawkowatej bez zaprawy oraz z zastosowaniem zapraw – kwasu szczawiowego oraz soli nieorganicznych glinu, cyny, żelaza i miedzi. Barwa tkaniny oznaczana była w systemie CIE L*a*b*. Uzyskano odcienie blado pomarańczowe do łososiowych. W przypadku żelaza i miedzi uzyskano zdecydowanie odmienną barwę, ciemny szary i rdzawy odpowiednio.

In Poland, according to the law (amendment of the act of 21st May 2010) – on the provision of information on the environment and its protection, public participation in environmental protection and environmental impact assessments etc. (Official Law Journal article 08.199.1227, as amended) – the owner can cut down trees without permission, if they do not exceed the age of 10 years old. However, if an owner happens to cuts down a tree on his property without knowing the age of the tree, he is liable to prosecution under this act. The aim of this study is to verify whether there is a possibility to calculate the actual age of silver birch trees growing on former agricultural lands using features that enable age of standing trees to be identified. Using these criteria, owners would be able to calculate the age of trees on their own. The research used 183 sample trees located on three research plots. For each tree, the dbh, height and prepared samples of wood from the trees base were used to give the age of the tree. The relationship between age and dbh, as well as between the age and the height was examined. The strength of correlation was compared and the strongest was used in the proposed model. Using these correlations two types of charts were constructed to estimate the age of young birches on the basis of dbh and height.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the content of selected minerals in silver birch sap, and to examine whether the tree thickness (DBH), the obtained daily volume of sap and the date of collection have an impact on their content. The study was carried out in central−eastern Poland, in the Garwolin Forest District, in a stand with a dominant share of silver birch at the age of 65, which grows on a moist mixed broadleaved forest habitat type. Sap from the selected trees was taken after 24 hours of leakage, four times, at weekly intervals. In each case, the daily sap volume was measured and the content of zinc, copper, and manganese was determined. As a result, no effect of tree diameter on the content of the studied elements was found. However, a negative relationship was stated between copper content and daily sap volume. Moreover, birch sap was characterized by increasing concentration of zinc and copper over time. The obtained results of the determination of the content of minerals in birch sap testify to the fact that it is characterized by high nutritional value. However, the large variability in its composition means that in order to obtain such benefits it is necessary to combine sap taken from as many trees as possible, while sap collected from only one tree may have a negligible nutritional value.

Opis:
Silver fir used to be one of the most important tree species in the Czech forests until the 19th century. Large scale clearcuts, which nowadays occur after the salvage logging of Norway spruce due to wind of bark-beetle attacks are unfavourable for the artificial regeneration of a fir. Growth of silver fir and three pioneer species was studied during first three years in a nurse crop system established after forest dis- turbance events. Five-years-old containerized silver fir seedlings were planted in autumn 2014 with silver birch, alder or aspen with and without nurse crops (control plot) on two localities (Tornádo and Rakovec). The Tornádo site represents natural conditions of Central European forest (Fageta typica) type on a haplic cambisols and favourable soil water regime, while Rakovec site a Querco-Abietetum forest type on a haplic stagnosols, which was periodically waterlogged. Silver fir grew best in admixture with silver birch which significantly promoted the height increment of the firs on both localities and improved the fir survival rate at one of the sites. The lower mortality and faster growth of both silver fir and pioneers were observed on Tornádo site where 92% and 100% of the silver fir trees survived under the birch and aspen cover, respec- tively, while 93% of planted firs survived in the open area. Only 93% and 67% of silver firs survived on the Rakovec site with same two pioneer species, respectively and 73% in the open area. After three years the highest height increment of silver fir was observed under silver birch, where trees were by 20 cm and 11 cm taller at Tornádo and Rakovec sites, than on the control plots, respectively. Aspen and alder had no significant effect on the height increment of a silver fir at any of the study sites. The shelter of nurse crops had no effect on the air temperature. The artificial regeneration of a climax silver fir and a pioneer silver birch was beneficial on Tornádo sites. On the other hand, there should be a delay between the regeneration of silver birch and underplanting of fir on the waterlogged sites.

Opis:
In our subsequent studies of birch tree saps we focused on assessing their antioxidant capacity. For research we chose four groups of silver birch trees (Betula pendula Roth.), consisting of five individuals. Antioxidant capacity was examined using spectrophotometric technique. The highest antioxidant capacity, tested by the Folin-Ciocalteau method and expressed as a total phenolics content was 6.59 mg GAE/100 ml of tree sap, and in turn the lowest one 0.88 mg GAE/100 ml. The highest antioxidant capacity determined ABTS method and expressed as radical scavenging activity (RSA) was 30.9% and lowest 5.38% The average values of antioxidant capacity both expressed as a phenolic compounds content and as radical scavenging activity for tree saps collected from four particular locations did not differ significantly. Based on the obtained results of tree sap analyses, it can be claimed that compared to other food products, e.g. fruit and vegetable juices, birch saps are not a rich source of phenolic compounds and when compared e.g. to tee infusions, they have low antioxidant capacity. Although it can be increased by the introduction of functional additives, such as herbal extracts or concentrated fruit juices.

Opis:
The aim of this work is to evaluate the ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological use of Betula pendula Roth in various regions of Transylvania, in East and Central Romania. Silver birch is an important pioneer species in the country, which has traditionally been used in ethnomedicine, households and various customs. Among the ethnic groups, 55 informants from the Csángós and 68 from the Székelys were interviewed in six villages during field studies occurring between 2007 and 2012. Informants were asked questions about the medical and non-medical applications of B. pendula, focusing on the use of the leaf and woody parts in tools and customs, and on the collection and use of birch sap with its temporal change in local ethnomedicinal knowledge. Differences related to the use of birch among the studied areas were observed. The folk remedies prepared from the sap (“virics”) and leaves were documented in local customs, with similar symbolic roles assigned to birch used in other countries. Sap collection was performed during interviews and by manual means. Four special section types on the trunk were presented, and data concerning the nutritional and ethnomedicinal use of the sap was recorded. Both the significance and use of birch sap have drastically decreased in Transylvania due to the appearance of new phytotherapeutical sources and to social changes caused by migration of young people. We found that this phenomenon is gradually leading to the disappearance traditional harvesting techniques, frequency of use and ethnomedicinal knowledge concerning B. pendula in the studied regions.

The aim of this study was to determine the content of selected heavy metals in birch sap, and to examine whether the tree diameter, the obtained daily sap volume and the date of collection have an impact on their content. Moreover, it was decided to check whether the tree diameter could affect the intensity of the sap leak. The study was carried out in central−eastern Poland, in the Garwolin Forest District, in a stand with a dominant share of silver birch at the age of 65, which grows on a moist mixed broadleaved forest habitat type. Sap from the selected trees was taken after 24 hours of leakage, four times at weekly intervals. In each case, the daily sap volume was measured and the content of lead, nickel, chromium and cadmium was determined. No effect of tree diameter on the content of the studied elements was found. We also proved that the tree thickness had an impact on the daily sap volume. However, a negative relationship was stated between lead and cadmium content and daily sap volume. In turn, over time, birch sap was characterized by increasing concentration of lead and cadmium, while in the case of nickel downward trend was shown for two diameter classes. The obtained results of the determination of the con− tent of heavy metals in birch sap testify to the fact that for most of samples it is characterized by health safety. However, few exceedances of the most restrictive potable water as well as fruit juices and nectars standards are encountered, confirming the susceptibility of birch sap to heavy metal pollution. Therefore, in order to guarantee the safety of consumers, primarily it is necessary to select the collection points taking into account potential industrial and agricultural pollution and secondly – combining birch sap taken from as many trees as possible in order to average a very large variation in the content of heavy metals, both between individual trees and over time. It should also be noted that consum.

Opis:
One of the tree species appearing after a decline of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. in the Silesian Beskid Mountains is Silver Birch Betula pendula Roth. Therefore our study was aimed at evaluating this birch regeneration and the dynamics of changes resulting from experimental cutting. Measurements and inventories of trees were conducted on research plots located in a ten-year old birch regeneration site with either no cutting, partial cutting (50%) or clear cutting (100%) of birch. We observed an introduction of biocenotic species (rowan, willow, aspen) as well as the target species (spruce, fir, beech) under the birch canopy. Fir and beech were also planted, because of their slow natural regeneration. The clear cut treatment caused a great number of sprouts growing from birch stumps, reaching a height of about 2 m over 3 years, resulting in competition with the regeneration of other species. Partial cutting did not cause such a drastic amount of sprouting. Furthermore, we found that only the spruce height increment is significantly less under a birch canopy compared to open space. The obtained results indicate a necessity to adjust the density and species composition of regenerating tree species under a birch canopy, avoiding complete removal of the first generation birch cover and the need to moderately thin out birch.

Opis:
Research on the effect of birch regeneration on changes occurring in the environment on former farmlands included a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the biomass growing on the research plots. Five experimental plots were selected in the Mazovia region: two in Dobieszyn and the Kampinos National Park and one in Kozienice. The analysis performed on each plot was concerned with the amount and chemical composition of biomass in four patches of vegetation, characterised by the different ages of the birch trees growing there. The vegetation patches were classified according to age group, i.e. I: 1–4 years old, II: 5–8 years old, III: 9–12 years old and IV: over 12 years old. Biomass samples were collected in the field and determined in kg DM/ha using the following components: roots, stem, bark, branches, assimilation apparatus, litterfall and the total biomass of the other (except birch) plants. For all the above-mentioned groups, the content of the elements N, C, S, Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, and Cd was determined. This allowed us to obtain both the values of the concentrations of particular substancesand their allocation in both the organic matter and litterfall. The aim of theresearch was to discover whether the allocation of elements changes with the age of birch growing on former farmland.
