Opis:
The increasing interest in applying small area estimation methods urges the needs for training in small area estimation. To better understand the behaviour of small area estimators in practice, simulations are a feasible way for evaluating and teaching properties of the estimators of interest. By designing such simulation studies, students gain a deeper understanding of small area estimation methods. Thus, we encourage to use appropriate simulations as an additional interactive tool in teaching small area estimation methods.

Opis:
The aim of the presented research is to evaluate the potential performance of a new bending magnet X-ray beamline—PolyX, designed for microimaging and microspectroscopy at the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS in Krakow. Due to the short beamline length (<15 m), PolyX uses compact polycapillary and single-bounce monocapillary optics for X-ray focusing in the 4–15 keV energy range. Polycapillary optics require a dedicated approach for an efficient simulation of X-ray propagation in multiple capillary channels. Therefore, the PolyX beamline was ray traced by combining XRT (XRayTracer) and polycap libraries. In addition, to estimate the X-ray fluorescence spectra excited by focused beams, Monte Carlo simulations were conducted using XMI-MSIM. All simulations were aimed to estimate the crucial X-ray beam properties, i.e., the flux, the spot size, and the energy spectrum, for monochromatic and polychromatic X-ray beams.

Opis:
The object of investigation was the one-strand tundish with flow control device such as gas permeable barrier (GPB). The aim of this flow control device was to activate the motion of liquid steel in the tundish longitudinal axis region. Computer simulation of the liquid steel flow and argon behaviour in isothermal turbulent motion conditions was done using the Ansys-Fluent computer program. For the validation of the hydrodynamic patterns obtained from computer simulations, a isothermal tundish glass model was used. Tundish glass model enables the recording of the visualization of fluid medium motion through the particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. Based on computer simulations, the liquid steel flow path lines in the tundish with GPB was obtained. For explain the hydrodynamic phenomena occurring in the tundish working space, the Buoyancy number has been calculated.

Opis:
Molecular dynamics computer simulations are employed to investigate the effect of a sample thickness on the ejection process from ultrathin graphite. The thickness of graphite varies from 2 to 16 graphene layers and the system is bombarded by 10 keV C₆₀ projectiles at normal incidence. The ejection yield and the kinetic energy of emitted atoms are monitored. The implications of the results to a novel analytical approach in secondary ion mass spectrometry based on the ultrathin free-standing graphene substrates and transmission geometry are discussed.

Opis:
The decrease in new oil field discoveries over the years makes it necessary to return to the abandoned partially depleted oil fields. Due to remaining significant amount of geological resources, mature oil field can be important in the overall balance. The production rate can be increased using various recovery methods. This paper presents a method of revitalizing mature oil fields used in Poland and wide world as well as screening criteria were presented. This article indicate the role of computer simulation as a tool in planning process of revitalization works in case of mature oil fields exploration and management. A recovery methods would be proposed, using computer simulation for the selected reservoir in south – eastern Poland as an example. The effectiveness of the recovery method would be determined through forecast of future production. An preliminary economic analysis would be performed to determine the feasibility of the seletected method taking into account the initial investment costs and different oil prices.

Opis:
This paper presents some selected issues of modelling and simulation of physical performance of the External Unilateral Mechatronic Orthopaedic Fixator-Bone (EUMOFB) system intended for treatment of shafts of long bones. The model structure includes both a nominal model of the system and a mathematical model design technique. The research inquiry has been limited to discrete models. While considering a clinic postulate of functional treatment of fractures, it has been introduced a stability concept in technical terms. A monitoring method for fracture healing process where both measures of bone union and heuristic techniques depending on artificial feedforward neural networks have been employed is presented too. The test readings were used to build fixators of a new generation. Some results obtained in environment of a clinic are also presented in this paper.
Mechatroniczne ortopedyczne stabilizatory zewnętrzne - modelowanie, symulacja komputerowa i badania kliniczne. Artykuł prezentuje wybrane zagadnienia dotyczące modelowania i symulacji układu: mechatroniczny ortopedyczny unilateralny zewnętrzny stabilizator - kość, przeznaczonego do leczenia trzonów kości długich. Analiza i badania posłużyły do budowy stabilizatora nowej generacji. W pracy przedstawiono również wybrane badania kliniczne.

Opis:
The article describes numerical simulations of the process of lifeboat launching at the ship’s side. The research aimed at finding the values of ship motion parameters which appear to be most dangerous for people in the lowered lifeboat due to the generated accelerations. The simplified model of ship hull motion adopted at this research stage bases on a superposition of harmonic motions with given amplitudes and periods in six degrees of freedom. The range of the amplitude of motion for each degree of freedom corresponds approximately to that of possible motion of the PANAMAX type ship on the Baltic sea. In total, 120 960 cases of ship hull motion were examined.

Opis:
In the latest literature there is a lack of broader discussion of the Gordon Model, with a desire to point out that its assumptions do not fit the expectations of modern investors and the nature of capital markets. The issue prompts us to ask whether this model can still be used by modern scientists and investors. The aim of the article is to present a classic Gordon model and show the direction of its modification. An attempt was also made to use simulation studies in a graphical interpretation of a selected share, which incorporates the Gordon's modified and classic models.

Opis:
The need for the scalability of an algorithm is essential when one wants to utilize an HPC infrastructure in an efficient and reasonable way. In such infrastructures, synchronization affects the efficiency of the parallel algorithms. However, one can consider introducing certain means of desynchronization in order to increase the scalability. Allowing certain messages to be omitted or delayed can be easily accepted in the case of metaheuristics. Furthermore, some simulations can also follow this pattern and thereby handle bigger environments. The paper presents a short survey on the desynchronization idea, pointing out already obtained results, or sketching out future work focused on scaling the parallel and distributed computing or simulation algorithms.

Constraining MPI models using $\sigma_{eff}$ and recent Tevatron and LHC Underlying Event data

Opis:
We review the modelling of multiple interactions in the event generator Herwig++ and study implications of recent tuning efforts to Tevatron and LHC data. It is often said that measurements of the effective cross section for double-parton scattering, $\sigma_{eff}$, are in contradiction with models of the final state of multi-parton interactions, but we show that the Herwig++ model is consistent with both and gives stable predictions for underlying event observables at 14 TeV.
