Vector algebra for Steep Slope Model analysis
Autorzy:
Kolecka, Natalia
Opis:
Geographic Information Systems offer many algorithms that allow analysis of digital elevation models. They work with both GRID and TIN data, but they are limited to 2.5D models, where one planar (X,Y) position refers to only one vertical (Z) value. In mountainous regions, however, many steep, vertical and even overhung parts of rock walls and slopes occur. GRID and TIN models in a standard projection are not capable to deal with such a relief as they are not able to capture all complexity of steep slopes that can be observed from the terrestrial perspective. Such a perspective can be introduced into GIS via computer graphics software that allows 3D surface modelling by means of \mathit{mesh}, e.g. 3D triangular network. The paper presents a concept that implements 3D mesh in GIS and utilizes vector algebra to analyze such a surface. The idea is based on using normal vectors to compute slope and aspect of each triangle in a mesh. The computed values are saved as their attributes. Complete procedures are written in Python programming language and implemented into popular GIS software to work as a plug-in tool.

Opis:
Construction of roads by passes and express roads drastically impacts natural environment. During construction and then operation of all road earth structures, especially road slopes, are exposed to the process of surface erosion.. That is why the effective protection of slope surface against negative impact of denudation factors is very important. Rain water cannot run-off directly from road surfaces on non-reinforced ground shoulders or slopes. Together with road earthworks, technical and biological revetment of shoulders must be made, and vegetation of grass on the slopes should be developed up to three-leaf stage. Aslo pratotechnic works (seedind, fertilization, mowing) should be done regularly .

Opis:
Values of rainfall thresholds on selected shallow landslide slopes (Dział, Gwoździec) located in the Nowy Wiśnicz Foothills are determined using a physically-based slope stability model considering a long-term period of analysis (GeoSlope Inc. software). Slope stability analysis included determination of the impact of rainfall on changes of stress state within the soil substrate and their influence on estimation of mass movement risk. The slope stability calculation results have shown that the rainfall threshold values are a function of many variables, primarily the hydraulic properties of soil and rock substratum, temporal distribution of precipitation, and soil moisture content conditions in the period proceeding rainfall. The results of the calculations indicate that, in extreme cases, accumulated rainfall threshold values for the same slope can range from ~100 to 500 mm. Estimated rainfall threshold values were lower than those values reported in the literature for the Polish Carpathians, but are similar to those determined by Guzetti et al. (2007) for Central and Southern Europe.

Opis:
The use of the Q-slope value is a relatively new approach for the stability investigations of rock slopes. In this study, four different slopes in Giresun and Ordu cities of Turkey were investigated to assess whether the Q-slope approach is usable for varying slope heights, or not. A back analysis was carried out for a landslide in a case study quarry located in Kovanlik municipality of Giresun city. Carrying out detailed investigations on the geotechnical drill cores and the field studies, the Q-slope value of the rock mass of the Kovanlik quarry was determined as 0.58. According to the Q-slope approach, the slope which had a landslide under the case of 49° general slope angle and 225 m height should have been stable at a general slope angle of 59°. It has been found that the Q-slope approach is not favorable for a high slope with the height of 225 m. Two roadway excavations with steep slope angles and low heights smaller than 25 m were also investigated within this study. According to the Q-slope value, the roadway slopes which are stable for more than 3 years are estimated to be unstable. Therefore, the Q-slope approach was found also misleading for slopes with low heights like those under 25 m. On the other hand, the Q-slope method usability is confirmed obtaining parallel results with the observations from another case study slope with a height of 78 m. Although it has become a popular empirical method in the recent years, it is recommended to revise the Q-slope approach or limit its use depending on the slope height parameter.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to find an answer to the question about the possibility of using steel welded mesh in building the retaining walls of gabion baskets. In light of the currently used gabion structure solutions, among which double-woven mesh is much more popular, the focus was put on the possibility of using welded mesh. A numerical analysis was conducted to examine the behavior of welded and woven mesh subjected to various loads and the results obtained for both types of mesh were directly compared. The maximal displacement in mesh nodes was admitted as the measurement of the system behavior (in the case of both undamaged and damaged mesh).

Opis:
The landforms of the Chornohora Mountains and related geomorphological processes are strongly controlled by geological structure. Detailed geomorphological mapping of the Chornohora Range yielded evidence of deep-seated gravitational slope failures on the south-western slopes. These slope deformations were structurally predisposed and linked to the dip of bedrock strata and their resistance to erosion, as well as to cracks and faults within the flysch formations. This paper presents structural factors controlling the morphology of relatively poorly recognized, dip-adjusted south-western slopes of the Chornohora Mts. between Mt. Hoverla (2,061 m a.s.l.) and Mt. Pop Ivan (2,022 m a.s.l.).

Opis:
The process of cliff erosion in Jastrzrtbia G6ra is a superposition of two phenomena: the abrasion at the foot of the cliff and slope failures of its upper part. Prior to the reconstruction works the stability analysis was done. Obtained results clearly documented reasons of slope failures observed during years. Based on the results five methods of slope protection were discussed The chosen method for reconstruction of a one cliffs stretch consists of a drainage system installation and slope support by means of reinforced sand blocks. During construction works the emergency laser system at the edge of the cliff was installed The construction works were successfUlly completed in the middle of November 2000.
