Opis:
Background: Loneliness is prevalent and increases risks of disease and premature death. We aimed to investigate whether greater exposure to nature is associated with less loneliness in urban Bulgarian adults, and whether the association was modified by sociodemographic factors. Methods: The analytic sample comprised 3604 adults from a cross-sectional population-based survey conducted in 2023 in the five largest Bulgarian cities. Loneliness was self-reported with a single item on a seven-point Likert scale. Availability of nature was assessed by several GIS-derived indicators: normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), tree cover density, urban green space, all in a 300 m buffer around home, and distance to blue space. Self-reported nature indicators included domestic garden, green space and blue space quality, green space and blue space window view, and time spent in green and blue space. Adjusted negative binomial regressions with random intercept for city district were used to assess associations with loneliness. We further checked effect modification by city type, sex, age, relationship, employment status and education. Results: Residing in areas with more urban green space, higher green space quality, and green space window view and spending more time in green and blue space were associated with lower loneliness scores. Living in low or high compared to medium level NDVI settings or in areas with higher tree cover density was associated with higher loneliness scores. Sociodemographic factors modified some of these associations. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the importance of extending and improving structured urban green spaces in Bulgarian cities.

Opis:
Objective: To evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients aroused from prolonged coma after a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) treated by physiotherapists trained in the ‘Academy of Life’ programme. It was assumed that physiotherapists who acquired this knowledge and experience would create a better therapeutic milieu, and would be more effective than physiotherapists who had not received this training. Material and methods: 40 patients who had suffered a severe TBI in a motor vehicle accident and had been aroused from prolonged coma were examined. All the patients underwent long-term rehabilitation according to a standard, phased programme. They were divided into two numerically even groups: an experimental group, treated by therapists trained in the ‘Academy of Life’ programme, and a control group, treated by physiotherapists who were not trained in this programme. The research instruments included an analysis of documentation, a structured clinical interview, and the Quality of Life Scale. Results: As hypothesized, the experimental group showed significant improvement in HRQOL, whereas in the control group improvement was statistically non-significant. Conclusions: The patients from the experimental group, treated by physiotherapists trained in the ‘Academy of Life’, obtained a significantly greater improvement in physical and social functioning, and thus in HRQOL, than patients from the control group.

Opis:
Social changes permanently occurring in modern world have been inevitably reflected in the decreased role of the family with regard to care for their elderly relatives. Notwithstanding the fact that the elderly do take more and more efforts to live on their own and independently of their children, there is always some point when the assistance of others becomes indispensable. If the caring role of the family is disrupted to such an extent that the elderly person cannot count on any assistance from the family or has no relatives, then care in institutional settings can be a solution. Nowadays, we can see the excessively growing number of applications for places in residential nursing homes. A residential nursing home is a place that should provide the elderly with accommodation services, protection, physical rehabilitation, as well as social and mental activity recuperation. Moreover, elderly residents of institutional care homes should have the opportunity to cherish the human rights and basic freedoms, such as: respect for their dignity, privacy, beliefs and needs. In our country there has not been active social policy with regard to the elderly yet that would entail comprehensive satisfaction of needs. One can have the impression that the role and place of the elderly is distinctly diminished. We shall hop e that the words cited from the Report of the Royal Commission on Long-Term Care, ordered and published in 1999 by the government of the United Kingdom, become significant also for the Polish circumstances: ( ... ) The moral test of Government is how that Government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life - the sick, the needy, and the handicapped ( ... ).

Opis:
Today, disturbingly often, it is possible to witnesses the effects of stigma and exclusion not only of the individual, but of whole groups of people, the result of reinforced, persistent stereotypes and prejudices about the subjects mentioned. They cause wrong social attitudes, expressed by the deprivation of the isolated persons of their rights to create and nurture relationships based on closeness and love, and often doom these people to a life of total seclusion. This article is an attempt to show the far-reaching consequences of depriving persons with intellectual disabilities and denying the right of self-expression. It is also a critical reflectionon the irregularities experienced by people, towards whom it is introduced, in terms of institutional isolation. At the same time, by presenting the results of personal research and conclusions, attention is being drawn to the fact that in our society there is an emerging hope for positive changes in the daily treatment of the socially isolated individuals. Yet, there is a constant need for a continuous reinforcement of the public awareness of the fact that the reintegration of these excluded individuals in the community benefits both the parties involvedTaking up the theme of stigma and social exclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities and convicts is considered important and relevant, as this is an issue which remains topical and gives rise to multiple moral dilemmas.

Opis:
Background. Loneliness is a subjective, complex and multi-dimensional feeling, having a significant impact on mental health. It is related to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Objectives. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of loneliness in elderly patients in medical care. Material and methods. We conducted a cross-sectional study of a sample of 150 participants, aged ≥ 65 years, interviewed by a structured questionnaire, including the University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (UCLA -LS ), for assessment of loneliness. Other variables included socio-demographic characterisation and family dysfunction. Total medication prescription and polymedication were used to assess the medical care assistance profile. Logistic regression was used for multivariate analysis. Results. The prevalence of moderate to severe loneliness was 36% (95% CI: 28.3–44.2%), higher with ageing, without differences between gender. The greatest impact in loneliness occurred in the presence of family dysfunction, income dissatisfaction, living alone and ageing. Being married/in a non-marital partnership and maintaining professional activity appeared as protective factors. The perception of loneliness was related with polymedication, with higher levels of loneliness matching with higher polymedication. Conclusions. Loneliness is common in the geriatric population and interferes significantly with health care; thus, it can be considered a determinant of health. Incorporating this factor into clinical decision reasoning is crucial for better health care.

Opis:
The issue of social exclusion and the consequences of this process for members of minority groups is becoming increasingly important in the field of education. The answers to this state are the postulates of anti-discrimination education and intercultural education. It is worth reflecting what common features, and what are the differences between the two approaches? How can we define the interrelationships between the intercultural education and anti-discrimination education? In this article the two approaches are mentioned as: “the two sides of the same coin" and also as: "anti-discrimination education as a specific continuation of intercultural education ... and vice versa", or as a result of seeing different problems "being together in manifold world". These different reviews of the problem generate different consequences for understanding these two approaches. Their association may be present in a variety of events and initiatives at both school and other institutions of education and socialization among children, adolescents and adults.

Poczucie samotności wśród polskich emigrantów w Szkocji
Social and emotional isolation among Polish migrants in Scotland
Autorzy:
Siuda, Anna
Opis:
The aim of the following research was to diagnose sense of loneliness among polish migrants in Scotland. Firstly, the theoretical approaches, definitional issues and theoretical views on the causes of loneliness are presented. This part consist also of the description of the key theory for the following research, the concept of loneliness by R. S. Weiss, in which a distinction between social and emotional loneliness is made. The theoretical considerations have also been supplemented with an analysis of the culture shock phenomenon and the process of cultural adaptation, which can be seen a specific forms of psychological adaptation to life in the foreign country. The theoretical approaches became the basis of the following research, that was conducted on a group of polish migrants in Scotland. Data were obtained with the use of answers given in the ELSI Scale and a questionnaire survey. The study shows that the culture shock is associated with rather emotional, than social sense of loneliness. The factors that can be seen as inhibitors of these negative affective states are: the activity of life, a sense of relationship with both host country and the country of origin and that quantity and quality of social relationships. Practical implications arising from the obtained results indicate that there is a need to provide migrants with an intense emotional and informative support, especially within the first months of their stay abroad.
Rozważania teoretyczne zostały również uzupełnione o analizę zjawiska szoku kulturowego i procesu adaptacji kulturowej, będących specyficzną formą przystosowania psychicznego do życia w obcym kraju. Wnioski praktyczne wynikające z uzyskanych wyników wskazują na konieczność udzielania emigrantom intensywnego wsparcia emocjonalnego i informacyjnego w szczególności w pierwszych miesiącach pobytu.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to learn about parental experiences and impact related to the development of sports abilities in children before and during social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: In the presented article, parents’ statements regarding their influence on the development of their children’s sports abilities in a situation of social isolation were analyzed. The research method was the in-depth free interview.THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The key concepts for the analysis were defined and the importance of parental impact for the development of children’s sports abilities was characterized.RESEARCH RESULTS: In parental activities aimed for the development of children’s sports abilities before the pandemic, the most important are: early identification of children’s potential, decision on developing their skills, involvement of parents in the organization and financing of various forms of development, care for overall physical development and health, and providing mental support. During the social isolation caused by COVID-19, the parents’ actions changed their nature – it was necessary to find a place and time at home for training, as well as organizational and mental support, especially motivation, while reconciling it with learning and remote work of all family members. The difficulty for parents was that they had to replace the coaches at home, without having the appropriate competences to do so, and also working on motivating their child to keep them in sports and regular training. On the other hand, when analyzing the opportunities related to the development of sports skills resulting from social isolation, their relationship with the specific experiences of young athletes becomes apparent.CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATION: During the pandemic, parents were forced to take over the function of trainers, mostly without sufficient competences or domestic conditions. Excluding specialized institutions from caring for gifted people can significantly reduce the motivation of young athletes and thus lead to a loss of achievement.→KEYWORDS:sports abilities, parental impact, social isolation
