Opis:
The purpose of this study was to investigate social network analysis (SNA) indicators of actors among exploiters, members of local water user associations (WUA), and their boards of directors in Ilam Province, Iran. The network analysis method and Ucinet6 software were used to examine the information exchange network and the network of participation among the members of the WUAs across the province. The actors of the local WUAs in the study area included the Water Supply Organization, the Agri-Bank, the Agricultural and Natural Resources Management Organization, the Agriculture Organization, the Department of Cooperatives, Labor and Social Welfare, the Provincial Government, the Village Council and Rural Municipalities, the Agricultural Insurance Fund, and the Regional Water Company of the province. Among the experts, one was selected from each organization or administration via the purposeful sampling method. A questionnaire containing 20 items with a Likert-type scale was designed for data collection, and the actors active in the field of local WUAs were asked to determine the information exchange rate and the participation of their organization/administration with other organizations/administrations. In addition, the relationship between the active actors and local WUAs was examined from the perspective of the actors in the province. The results of the analysis of the density index at the whole level of the information exchange network and the participation network showed that the density of the links to exchange information and participate in the network of actors was low across the provincial WUAs. In total, according to network density indicators, network size, centrality (concentration) of the entire network, and the social cohesion of the information exchange network and the network of participation were ranked to be weak to moderate.

Twitter and the European Public Sphere: Twitter as digital salon?
Twitter a europejska sfera publiczna: Twitter jako cyfrowy salonon?
Autorzy:
Smits, Truus
Opis:
This dissertation explores the use of twitter in the European context and relates this to the concept of the public sphere. First this dissertation tries to answer the question: ‘Do we see the emergence of a European public sphere?’ by looking at the different things that have been said in the literature on this. Hereafter this research tries to look whether twitter could contribute to the emergence of a European public sphere by looking at twitter as a ‘space for debate’ like the European salons Habermas talks about in his work. This dissertation finds that there are signs that we do see the emergence of a European public sphere. On the other hand this European public sphere seems mostly to be a part of the world’s public sphere, both online and offline. Secondly this dissertation found that twitter is a tool that can have a place in this public sphere. One could not possibly say that twitter can be seen as the ideal type salon that Jürgen Habermas had in mind. A real debate this research has not found on twitter, as only 14.50% of the tweets in the sample included a comment and most websites that people linked to were websites where there was just news to be found (60.42%) and very little critical analyses (27.08%). Twitter does seem to have a role in information disseminating, with most of the tweets linking to traditional news media (23.96%). Just like the eighteenth century salons seem to have had their part in forming the public sphere, twitter can have its part as well. What in point of fact was happening in these salons and happens on twitter is an exchange between a part of the society that has an important place in the public sphere. Where the salons mostly seem to have been a place for debate - even though surely for information sharing as well - twitter seems mostly to be a place for information sharing.Twitter can contribute to shaping and forming the public sphere because of several reasons. One of it is its value as an information source; through twitter information is easily accessible. Another one is because of its value in establishing connections; small interest groups can find and communicate with each other. It gives them - even when having little resources - the opportunity to present opinions to a wider public. In this way online communities can be formed. At the same time their interaction remains public and information can spread through weak ties to other thickenings or clusters in the network.Through twitter a wide range of information is available, but probably even a wide range of opinions is available. Twitter makes interaction possible between people, institutions, news sources and others. Even though politicians do not yet seem to be very influential in the twitter debate (this research found only 1 politician among the influentials), a lot of them are in fact on twitter. Here there is still an opportunity for growth.Another reason that twitter could contribute to the shaping and the forming of the public sphere is that interaction takes place mostly between individuals (40.42% of the influentials were individuals. Twitter gives a possibility for those individual citizens to connect, share information and share opinions. This dissertation is the first research to study twitter in relation to the concept of the European public sphere. There has been some talk about how social media relates to the public sphere, but no social medium has been studied in relation to the European public sphere before. This research hopes to give some pointers for further research. This dissertation establishes that in fact the world is too complicated, complex and intricate to speak of ‘the European Sphere’. The world is one big network in which a lot of radars are involved in shaping the public sphere. Twitter is one of those radars. Within the worlds knotty network twitter has its place in the ‘space for debate’.
Ta praca to pierwsze badania Twittera w stosunku do koncepcji europejskiej sfery publicznej.

Opis:
Using social network analysis for the studies of organizational structure allows to understand in more details the ways of real organizing of employees. The manner in which people work is the quotidian knowledge that is often not realized very well but it is essential for effective performance of a company. The article presents the research process that results in a picture of organizational structure reflected as the network of connections between employees. The studies are usually conducted with survey questions that are presented in the article (cooperation, information flow, the flow of knowledge and problem-solving, and finally the decision flow) and interpreted in the context of the analysis made in a real company. The network structure of an innovative IT company (125 employees) consisting of 3097 connections has been visualized and analyzed. We tested the assumptions regarding the degree of company integration, the level of centralization in decision making process, the way of task coordination and the possible blockages in the flow of knowledge. We also highlighted employees that were important in these areas and specified their roles.

Opis:
Social network analysis (SNA) is an important and valuable tool for knowledge extraction from massive and unstructured data. Social network provides a powerful abstraction of the structure and dynamics of diverse kinds of interpersonal connection and interaction. In this paper, we address issues associated with the application of SNA to the investigation and analysis of social relationships of people. We provide a brief introduction to representation and analysis of social networks, SNA models and methods. The main objective is to investigate the application of SNA techniques to data mining in case of two social networks Facebook and Twitter. The presented simulations illustrate how social analysis can be used to determine the interpersonal connections, importance of actors in a given social network and detect communities of people. We then discuss strength and weakness of SNA techniques.

Opis:
Network structure refers to a general system, network, or pattern of relationships that can be derived from the observable behavior of animate and inanimate actors or objects in a given population. Structure is usually understood as the arrangement of parts or elements of some complexity tied together by relations. The study of these relations is the subject of network theory. A network consists of nodes and links that form dyads, triads, groups, or a system of interconnected animate (actors) and inanimate objects, based on the specific types of relationships between them. In a dyad, ties come together, through the type of relation, to create a system of interdependence. Triads are fundamental network structures. There are 16 types of triads in a directed network in which balanced relationships or structural holes can be analyzed. This entry further defines network structure and then discusses the theoretical concepts behind it, basic types of networks in terms of their topology, and the measurement of network topology. A network is dynamic by nature. Within network structure, nodes and relations are established, maintained, or broken (deleted), determining similarity between attitudes and behaviors. There is a shift from individual-level analysis to relational and systemic research. Network structure and networks are an excellent way of presenting phenomena and objects from the perspective of the network of relations, interactions, and interdependence between them. Animate objects (e.g., human entities, organizations, animals), inanimate objects (e.g., things, artifacts), or contemporary epidemiological phenomena are mutually dependent on each other, creating an extensive, complex, and dynamic network structure. Many complex systems have a network structure. The most popular of them are the Internet, World Wide Web, and the citation network. Contemporary realities have driven researchers to focus on understanding the structure of the network of contacts during epidemics, which has a decisive impact on the dynamics of the spread of diseases. Determining this structure allows effective interventions to control and prevent epidemics. Standard research and social and behavioral methods pay attention to the attributes and characteristics of individual actors, which are studied independently of each other. Contemporary research in social or natural sciences, in which networks play a key role, focuses on the structure of the relations that exist between entities or objects.

The article, based on empirical research in one of the production and service companies acting in energy industry, develops the introductory implications on how social capital of change leaders is linked to the effectiveness of change implementation. Using organisational network analysis the author examines influence of social capital of change leaders in the area of real work flow during change implementation and open communication flow on change effectiveness. One finds that ties among change leaders in those two dimensions have distinct change effectiveness effects. In broaden aspect, findings have major implications on change management research and imply further research in this matter to be conducted by the author.

The main aim of the article is to argue the need for better focus of researchers conducting their research in the field of political science on some digital analytical tools used in social network analyses. Additional objectives are to outline the historical context of SNA’s development in this discipline, as well as to present possible fields of exploration and using of this method, both in basic and in applied research. Particular attention was paid to the potential of SNA in the study of the processes of cabinet coalitions formation, as well as to the important limitations of this method. The article was constructed as a methodological essay. We inevitably accept - because of its focus on network analyses a structural perspective on social reality. We verify the hypothesis that the greatest potential of SNA could be currently to create a visualization of social relations based on large data sets, but at the same time the most important barrier to the development of the method are limitations in the access to these data, which could be used as a basic analytical material for visualization of the network and generalization of the statistical conclusions. Presenting some political science research in Poland and around the world, in which SNA tools are used, we used the historical as well as the case study method.

In the paper the measures of the social network analysis were discussed in terms of their relevance to describe an interlocking directorates’ strategy with the suggestion of closeness and eigenvalue as best suited. The statistical analyses were presented. The analysis of the aforementioned measures’ statistical properties and their links with board size and degree revealed that it is hard to optimize them simultaneously by simply increasing a value of degree. As closeness is rather linearly linked to degree, insomuch as increasing eigenvalue, as latter requires the analysis of the network structure in order to optimize benefits to costs ratio.

Opis:
Rapid development of various kinds of social networks within the Internet enabled investigation of their properties and analyzing their structure. An interesting scientific problem in this domain is the assessment of the node position within the directed, weighted graph that represents the social network of email users. The new method of node position analysis, which takes into account both the node positions of the neighbors and the strength of connections between network nodes, is presented in the paper. The node position can be used to discover key network users, who are the most important in the population and who have potentially the greatest influence on others. The experiments carried out on two datasets enabled studying the main properties of the new measure.
