Opis:: The paper is devoted to special turn and the possibilities that it opens for literary studies. The most important trends in contemporary thinking about space are depicted, including those which had anticipated the spacial turn. The author concentrates mostly on those methodologies that she calls “geo‑tools”, that is: geopoetics (in its specifcally Polish understanding), literary geography and a few of its variants and on geocriticism.

Opis:: The article is an interpretation of the novel Ciemno, prawie noc (It’s dark, almost night) by Joanna Bator. It focuses on the specific vision of Wałbrzych, a real city located in the South of Poland. The vision consists of many traditional and present-day patterns entitled to create spatial images. In her novel, Bator examines methods of presenting urban spaces in literature which leads her to constructing a representation of a non-town. Destruction of the emotional sphere of the human personality (the case of the narrator – main character) damages the possibility of habituating the sphere of existence (home, quarter, town, province).

Opis:: This study examines the perception of space and the mental landscapes in Joseph Roth’s travel reportages from southern France. Particular focus will be placed on the articles that Joseph Roth wrote for the “Frankfurter Zeitung” and collected in a book published posthumously, in 1956 with the title Im mittäglichen Frankreich and afterwards under the title Die weißen Städte. In this text the relationship between the real topography, the literary representation and the subjective point of view of the author, might give us a new definition of the concept of “space” and “belonging” beyond language. The aim is to analyze the representation that Joseph Roth gives us, through his articles, that builds up new spaces and is in relation with the actual place and with the topography of the individual and collective memory.

Opis:: The following article presents the literary theory of spatial genres, which emerged as a result of spatial turn. It discusses the concepts which link speech genres with a particular geographical location developed by Bakhtin, Szczukin, Moretti, Deguy and de Certeau. The aim of the article is to develop and reinforce the thesis which maintains that every genre has its own space and every space has its own genre. In order to prove the connection between geography and the morphology of a text the author analyzes the writings of Kenneth White, who in his geopoetic literary genetics searches for original genres to express, as he says, “poetic listening to nature”.

Opis:: The main aim of the article is the consideration of problems connected with “the prose of rural spaces” (rural spaces’ prose) which is understood as an important theoretical term, used in critical texts in relation to novels, mainly written at the beginning of 21th century. Presented with examples from contemporary Polish literature (the popular and awarded novels written by e.g. Paweł Potoroczyn, Maciej Płaza, Wioletta Grzegorzewska, Weronika Gogola) rural spaces’ prose appears to be not entirely precise, but nevertheless a useful category. This category describes the authors’ literary explorations, as well as the methodological efforts of researchers to characterize this new cultural phenomena.

Opis:: The maritime and overseas journeys of the idea of anthropologyThis article discusses the very concept of anthropology, which was born at the end of 19th century, termed the “history of ideas”, and still exists in contemporary literary theory, especially as part of what is referred to as “spatial turn”. As with the similar concept proposed earlier by Ernst Curtius, it is focused on topics treated as the autonomous component of an anonymous, unpersonal, and in fact unhistorical discourse. On the contrary, the article tends to prove that travelling theories were always strongly connected with travelling theorists. In contrast, the author attempts to consider the interrelations between the two conceptions of anthropology: the philosophical and the linguistic, taking into account the material left in texts connected with the journey from Göteborg to New York by Roman Jakobson and Ernst Cassirer. The reconstruction of their possible discussions on board proves that the boundary between their projects, usually drawn in the history of culture, is weaker than could be supposed. Morskie i zamorskie podróże idei antropologiiArtykuł podejmuje dyskusję z koncepcją antropologii kulturowej wyłonioną po tzw. zwrocie spacjalnym i skupioną na wędrówkach pojęć. Ze względu na depersonalizację rozważanego materiału wciąż mieści się ona w modelu XIX-wiecznej jeszcze proweniencji, bliska historii idei i topice. Dyskusja została przeprowadzona na materiale nielicznych świadectw wiążących się z podróżą morską z Europy do USA, a w istocie ucieczką przed kolejną falą nazizmu, podczas której doszło do przypadkowego spotkania Romana Jakobsona i Ernsta Cassirera. Rekonstrukcja ich możliwych dialogów podczas piętnastu dni rejsu, wsparta na metodologicznej propozycji historii domyślnej wyprowadzonej z praktyki filologicznej Tadeusza Zielińskiego, pozwala odkryć silne związki między ich projektami, a tym samym między koncepcjami antropologii filozoficznej i antropologii lingwistycznej. Wyłaniające się ze świadectw tekstowych konwergencje podważają rozgraniczanie obu tych modernistycznych projektów, zwykle dokonywane w historii dyscypliny. Pozwalają także na reinterpretację rozpowszechnionych ujęć postawy profesjonalizmu uznawanej za typową dla uczonego nowoczesnego i utożsamianej z politycznym i społecznym niezaangażowaniem.
