At the crossroads of the approaches of reported speech : about the French and Polish theorising of reported speech This study presents the theoretical framework of a research project which, in a comparative perspective, deals with the linguistic and discursive question of reported speech in the Polish and French print media. The objective of this contribution is to discuss the fundamental theoretical points of this project, which are related firstly to the comparative approach, and secondly to the theorising of reported speech in grammars and linguistic studies, in order to show the differences in the treatment of reported speech in the French and Polish research.

Opis:
This study sought to evaluate the effect of speech intensity on performance of the Callsign Acquisition Test (CAT) and Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) presented in noise. Fourteen normally hearing listeners performed both tests in 65 dB A white background noise. Speech intensity varied while background noise remained constant to form speech-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of -18, -15, -12, -9, and -6 dB. Results showed that CAT recognition scores were significantly higher than MRT scores at the same SNRs; how- ever, the scores from both tests were highly correlated and their relationship for the SNRs tested can be expressed by a simple linear function. The concept of CAT can be easily ported to other languages for testing speech communication under adverse listening conditions

The article begins the description of the history of a mirror: its origin, creation and use. Then the characteristics of the mirror as a typical element of the speech therapy room equipment were made. The article discusses the issue of its use in the opinion of speech therapists. Speech disorders specialists note that it should be used first of all for people with articulation disorders and less for people with mutism.

In recent years, the speech-language pathology has developed dynamically. It plays a growing role not only in the area of education but also in the field of medicine. Teaching correct articulation is just one of possible challenges faced by speechlanguage pathologists. The multidisciplinary context of that field of knowledge can be seen in various subfields of speech-language pathology which have evolved over time. Therefore, the primary objective of the conducted research was to assess the awareness of the importance of speech-language pathologists in everyday life of children and adults. The research was carried out among 50 respondents in the city of Poznań and provided the ground for discussion on the subject being the core issue of the presented paper.

Opis:
To determine speech intelligibility using the test suggested by Ozimek et al. (2009), the subject composed sentences with the words presented on a computer screen. However, the number and the type of these words were chosen arbitrarily. The subject was always presented with 18, similarly sounding words. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether the number and the type of alternative words used by Ozimek et al. (2009), had a significant influence on the speech intelligibility. The aim was also to determine an optimal number of alternative words: i.e., the number that did not affect the speech reception threshold (SRT) and not unduly lengthened the duration of the test. The study conducted using a group of 10 subjects with normal hearing showed that an increase in the number of words to choose from 12 to 30 increased the speech intelligibility by about 0.3 dB/6 words. The use of paronyms as alternative words as opposed to random words, leads to an increase in the speech intelligibility by about 0.6 dB, which is equivalent to a decrease in intelligibility by 15 percentage points. Enlarging the number of words to choose from, and switching alternative words to paronyms, led to an increase in response time from approximately 11 to 16 s. It seems that the use of paronyms as alternative words as well as using 12 or 18 words to choose from is the best choice when using the Polish Sentence Test (PST).

What will be analysed in the paper, from the pragmalinguistic perspective, is the specificity and the positioning of wishes in an MP’s speech as a particular type of text. In my research, I would like to shed some light on the multifunctioning of such speech acts in the public performances, to which parliamentary speeches belong, which stems from the multitude of their addressees. I will be particularly interested in the change of the illocutionary force of wishes which, thanks to the influence of the irony that they contain, may serve the opposition politicians to mock the ruling party’s MPs. This, in turn, can indirectly lead to the disparagement of the latter. In a broader sense it can also be the result of a general persuasive function of all political speeches. The marking of irony is very specific for a given culture or even the idiolect of particular MPs. The precise knowledge of the possible indirect readings of some MPs’ utterances, and the techniques for deciphering ironic expressions would be very valuable for interpreters who have just recently begun their work in e.g. the European Parliament, where the speeches of MPs are interpreted simultaneously.

Opis:
This paper presents the automated speech signal segmentation problem. Segmentation algorithms based on energetic threshold showed good results only in noise-free environments. With higher noise level automatic threshold calculation becomes complicated task. Rule based postprocessing of segments can give more stable results. Off-line, on-line and extrema types of rules are reviewed. An extrema-type segmentation algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is enhanced by a rule base to extract higher energy level segments from noise. This algorithm can work well with energy like features. The experiments were made to compare threshold and rule-based segmentation in different noise types. Also was tested if multifeature segmentation can improve segmentation results. The extrema rule-based segmentation showed smaller error ratio in different noise types and levels. Proposed algorithm does not require high calculation resources. Such algorithm can be processed by devices with limited computing power.

Opis:
The first extensive investigation on the Lombard effect with Polish speech has been performed. Characteristic parameters of Lombard speech were measured: intensity, fundamental frequency, spectral tilt, duration of words, duration of pauses and duration of vowels. The effect was investigated in a task involving real communication – solving a Sudoku puzzle. The speakers produced speech in quiet and in three different backgrounds: competing speech, speech-shaped noise and speech-modulated noise. The experimental conditions were held as close as possible to those in the study by Cooke and Lu (2010) so that conclusions could be drawn whether differences between the Lombard effect in Polish speech and English speech existed. Most of the findings on the Lombard effect known from the literature have been confirmed with Polish speech. In three parameters, Polish speakers were more sensitive to modulated backgrounds while English speakers were more sensitive to a stationary background. In both languages, the modulated backgrounds induced speakers to extend pauses in the communication tasks.

Opis:
In the article we describe the methods of teaching language and speech at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb (Croatia) and at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana (Slovenia). We start by describing how language and speech are taught as individual subjects, we present the trends in teaching language and speech and compare the teaching practices at both academies. The main part of the article intends to show the connection between theory and practice in teaching, which should result in a stronger connection between the scientific and artistic approach in teaching. The goal of comparing the teaching practices at both academies is to show the similarities and differences in teaching and to explicitly present models of teaching and models of assessing the speech of actors, which have proved to be indisputable according to the comparison.

Opis:
The authors of the article analyze selected texts of Internet communication, identify the speech genre of a funny story from the life of animals, identify its typological parameters in accordance with a concept developed by Mikhail Bakhtin, show the stylistic originality of the ironically written and spoken presentation of the plot, compare the specified genre of Internet communication with the related non-media genre of funny stories, and demonstrate the similarities and differences between the compared genres. The authors note that the genre of a funny story from the life of animals reveals its belonging to the Internet communication environment with such properties as the attractiveness of the emotiogenic situation underlying its plot, hypertextual connection within the frame of entertainment sites, forums, and channels of the source text with other narrative texts of the same genre as well as with reactive replicas-comments, where an abbreviated version of this genre is implemented and from whose totality a polylogue is formed as a reflection of the interactivity of Internet communication. The authors state the kinship of the compared genres and pay attention to the prospects of studying the specifics of Internet genres against the background of their non-media counterparts. The research material consists of 40 Internet texts.
