Opis:: This article depicts contemporary spelling doubts encountered by Polish Philology students as far as unhyphenated and hyphenated spelling is concerned. The linguistic material to be analyzed is a part of the major survey research. The purpose of the work is, among others, to provide an answer to the question which parts of codified spelling norms do not correspond to the spelling customs of young Polish philologists, and attempt to find the source of these difficulties.

Opis:: W artykule zwrócono uwagę na pojawiające się w różnych źródłach głosy podnoszące kwestię dużej trudności reguł polskiej ortografii i postulaty jej znaczącej reformy (zwłaszcza w zakresie pisowni u – ó, ż – rz, ch – h). Następnie przedstawiono wyniki analizy prac uczniów jednego z gdańskich liceów ogólnokształcących i wybrane z nich błędy ortograficzne. Zakwalifikowano je do sześciu grup: pisownia wielką i małą literą, pisownia łączna i rozdzielna, pisownia wybranych typów formacji słowotwórczych i form fleksyjnych, pisownia samogłosek nosowych oraz połączeń om, em, on, en, pisownia wyrazów z ó, u, rz, ż, ch, h oraz inne błędy.
The article highlights voices appearing in various sources raising the issue of the great difficulty of the rules of polish spelling and the postulates of its significant reform (especially in the spelling of u – ó, ż – rz, ch – h). Then, the results of the analysis of the works of students of one of high schools in Gdańsk and selected spelling errors are presented. They were classified into six groups: uppercase and lowercase, joint and separate spelling, spelling of selected types of word-formation and inflectional forms, spelling of nasal vowels and combinations om, em, on, en, spelling of words z ó, u, rz, ż, ch, h and other errors.

Opis:: The influence of computer-internet reality on the spelling norms of contemporary Polish The paper – in accordance with the title – concerns the influence of information technology on the orthographic system of the Polish language. The use of computers and the Internet not only resulted in the appearance of new words in Polish, but also contributed to the decision on how to write specific computerisms (allowing their polonized version), and even to the formulation of spelling rules that standardize the spelling of certain word series, such as the names of computer fonts, programming languages, programs and operating systems, or the names of Internet portals. However, not all issues concerning the writing of newly appearing in Polish language computerisms have already been considered by linguists. The normative solution requires, among other things, spelling of derivatives created on the basis of nouns ending in silent e, which have been adopted from English. This is why the author discusses the existing spelling habits of the users of contemporary Polish language and signals the facts which should be taken into account when formulating an appropriate orthographic rule.

Opis:: Artykuł poświęcony jest omówieniu i ocenie, na tle losów ortografii polskiej w minionym stuleciu, zmian w zakresie pisowni łącznej i rozdzielnej, obowiązujących od 2026 r. Punkt wyjścia rozważań stanowi omówienie wariantywności pisowniowej oraz przeciwstawienie jej wariantywności pozornej, kiedy warianty graficzne nie są tożsame znaczeniowo. Zmiany zapowiedziane przez Radę Języka Polskiego poszerzają zakres wariantywności, ograniczają istniejącą wariantywność bądź całkowicie zmieniają przepisy. Celem zmian jest uproszczenie pisowni polskiej, m.in. poprzez ograniczenie wariantywności pozornej. Przeprowadzona analiza dowodzi, że stworzenie jednoznacznego zbioru reguł ortograficznych, które nie będą budziły wątpliwości interpretacyjnych, jest rodzajem utopii.
Taking into account the history of Polish orthography in the past century, the article discusses and assesses the changes concerning joint and separate spelling that will be in force from 2026. First, spelling variation is examined and contrasted with the situation when graphic variants are not semantically identical. The changes announced by the Council for the Polish Language expand the scope of variants, limit the existing variability or completely change the regulations. The aim of the changes is to simplify Polish spelling, among others by limiting the number of apparent variants with different meaning. The analysis proves that creating a clear set of spelling rules that will not raise any interpretative doubts is in fact a kind of utopia.

The article presents normative considerations concerning the spelling of the Internet lexeme. The review of particular decisions and opinions published in dictionaries, online language counselling and books popularizing knowledge about the Polish language is preceded by the most important information on the ontology of the medium, as well as an indication of correctness problems related to the use of the word. The adopted course of considerations will aim to indicate weaknesses of the proposed solutions, which — in the author’s opinion — require more detail or modification so that they can be effectively used by users of language.

Opis:: This text analyses Father António Vieira’s spelling practices in História do Futuro based on a new conservative manuscript reading. Written, for the most part, between 1664 and 1665, the fragments of the História do Futuro that have come down to us, attached to Vieira’s inquisitorial process, are working texts, unpolished versions, which, therefore, may eventually reveal some marks of the “classic” period of Portuguese. On the other hand, taking into account that Vieira’s training in spelling falls within the “etymological” period and that his reputation places him among the “good authors”, also in terms of spelling, we seek to identify the conservative and innovative marks and, eventually, the manifestation of an individual practice, which, as is known, was, in Vieira’s time and until the beginning of the 20th century, a notorious trend, particularly among great writers.

Opis:: This paper accounts for a new technique of correcting isolated words in typed texts. A language-dependent set of string substitutions reflects the surface form of errors that result from vocabulary incompetence, misspellings, or mistypings. Candidate corrections are formed by applying the substitutions to text words absent from the computer lexicon. A minimal acyclic deterministic finite automaton storing the lexicon allows quick rejection of nonsense corrections, while costs associated with the substitutions serve to rank the remaining ones. A comparison of the correction lists generated by several spellcheckers for two corpora of English spelling errors shows that our technique suggests the right words more accurately than the others.

Opis:: The article discusses spelling and punctuation variants of Polish phrases in contemporary Polish dictionaries. Spelling variants of idioms with regard to capital/lowercase spelling, most of all, results from progressing desemantization of original meanings. Examples excerpted from lexicographical sources prove that units whose meaning is not identical are usually written down in two variants, e.g. pyrrhic/Pyrrhic victory. Variants aremuch more frequently connected with a diversifiedmanner of recording a given unit in different lexicographical sources. Every dictionary provides one way of spelling of a given compound but consulting various dictionaries proves the existence of more than one variant.
