Opis:
This research aimed to determine the effect of different concentrations of Lead (Pb) on the morphology of kale and spinach plants. The process involved planting kale and spinach seeds in tubs and transferring them to polybags with planting media in the form of soil and sand at a ratio of 4:1 after strong roots were developed. It is important to note that the media were analyzed to ensure the Pb content in the soil was below the threshold before planting. Pb was later provided 1 week before planting in the form of PbNO3 in the media at a dose of 1 and 2 g/polybag and mixed effectively to ensure even distribution, while the sample used as the control was not given any Pb. The transplanting process was conducted after the plants were 18 days old in the nursery and the initial observations at 9 DAT showed that the kale leaves were darker with a score of 3 than spinach with a score of 1, but the spinach leaves became darker in color with score 3 as the age of the plants increased. Moreover, the kale changed to a lighter color with a score of 2 from the 9th day of observation after transplanting, while spinach requires 15 DAT to become score 2 until the end of the observation. It should be pointed out that both plants showed morphological changes due to the existence of the Pb but their base leaves did not reflect any effect. The kale leaf tip became blunt, while the spinach leaf tip was not affected and both plants were discovered to have longer roots and more root hairs in the control compared to the treatments. Furthermore, the total chlorophyll of spinach in the control was higher than kale but observed to reduce as the concentration of Pb increased in the treatments. The morphology and physiology of spinach and kale plants changed due to the Pb exposure with the spinach was discovered to be more sensitive as indicated by more visible morphological damage to its leaves at the end of the observation. It is possible to use the morphology of spinach and kale to detect Pb-contaminated land.

Opis:
The research aimed to find suitable solutions to reduce the salinity stress of irrigation water for some types of vegetables in hydroponics under two drip and mist irrigation systems. The different concentrations of NaCl for irrigation water, are 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 ppm used. Proline (30 mg∙dm -3), humic acid (300 mg∙dm -3) and compared without any from them were used to study their effect on the yield, and water use efficiency. The results indicated that the highest spinach and courgette yield (4.657 and 5.153 kg∙m -2) was observed for the DP500 treatment, and the lowest yield (0.348 and 0.634 kg∙m -2) was observed for the SW4000 treatment, respectively. The use of humic acid led to an increased yield on average by about 16.8 and 19.3% for spinach, and 39.4 and 51.7% for courgette, under drip and mist irrigation, respectively. Using proline led to an increased average yield of about 32.9 and 33% for spinach, and 51.8 and 58.4% for courgette, under drip and mist irrigation, respectively. The highest water use efficiency (WUE) of spinach and courgette (43.1 and 51.5 kg∙m -3) was observed for the DP500 treatment, and the lowest (3.2 and 6.3 kg∙m -3) was observed for the SW4000 treatment. According to our study, the use of proline and humic acid could compensate for the adverse effects of salinity under mist spraying more than drip irrigation.

Biochemiczne mechanizmy adaptacyjne okrzemkowym błon fotosyntetycznych do zmian temperatury
Biochemical mechanisms of adaptive diatomaceous photosynthetic membranes to temperature changes
Autorzy:
Mania, Aneta
Opis:
Organizacja aparatu fotosyntetycznego fotoautotrofów takich jak okrzemki, zielenice i rośliny jest bardzo podobna. Różnice dotyczą struktury błon fotosyntetycznych a szczególnie rodzajów występujących barwników i białkowych podjednostek fotosyntetycznych.
The organization of the photosynthetic phototrophs apparatus such as diatoms, green algae and the plant is very similar. The differences relate to the structure of photosynthetic membranes particulary of the type occurring pigments and photosynthetic protein subunits. Plants and green algae are characterized by chloroplasts, in which there are two systems of thylakoids, i.e. thylakoids stroma and thylakoids granum. The membrane of each of these types of thylakoid differs from quantitative ratio of photosynthetic complexes of PSI to PSII. Diatom chloroplasts contain only the one type of thylakoids. Moreover, the diatoms complex comprises a light-collecting chlorophyll c, instead of chlorophyll b, fucoxanthin instead of lutein as is the higher plants. In this thesis a comparative analysis of the molecular dynamics of photosynthetic membranes were made as representatives of three different groups phototrophs, ie. Phaeodactylum tricornutum as a representative of diatoms, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii which is the representative of green algae and spinach (Spinacia oleracea) representative of higher plants. Measurements of the molecular dynamics of the membrane were performed by using electron paramagnetic resonance. This method is based on measuring the EPR spectra of two spin labels 5-SASL and 16-SASL incorporable thylakoid membranes isolated from the test organisms. Molecular dynamics of membranes were tested in the temperature range from 0°C to 45°C (5°C). Based on the calculated value of the order of parameter S membrane fluidity of the test organisms in a given temperature range were compared. Correlation times τ2B and τ2C showed movement of the label spin (16-SASL) being built in the lipid bilayer. With the exception of spinach, test organisms were cultured at two different temperatures (15°C and 20°C), allowing to examine the effect of growth temperature on the thylakoid membrane fluidity. It was also examined whether the storage of samples in a deep freeze (-80°C) does not affect the reliability of the results of the molecular dynamics of membranes. The conducted experiments show that the samples can be stored in the form of frozen thylakoid. It was also observed that regardless of the species two growth temperature used does not affect the molecular dynamics of thylakoid membranes.

Opis:
This work aimed to underline the dynamics of photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters of ‘Matador’ and ‘Andromeda’ spinach species after short-term 1 and 2 kJm–2 UV-B radiation effect. When plants reached 3–4 leaves growths stage, the exposure to 1 kJm–2 and 2 kJm–2 UV-B radiation was done once for 68 and 136 minutes, respectively. The photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters were determined 2, 24, 48 and 72 hours after exposure. The stimulating effect of UV-B emerged on the 3rd day after exposure. The positive effect of UV-B was more pronounced for ‘Matador’. The highest DPPH radical-scavenging capacity and the highest concentration of α-tocopherols were detected 24 hours after 2 kJ UV-B exposure, but the decrease in photosynthetic rate was the highest as well. Meanwhile, on the 3rd day after 1 kJ UV-B exposure, the indicators of oxidative stress of ‘Matador’ decreased, and the photosynthetic rate increased. This study highlights that low UV-B radiation acts as an eustress, by awaking positive changes in photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters of spinach.

Opis:
Currently, lithium-ion batteries still use electrodes from graphite, which is a natural resource for non-metallic minerals. As a sustainable plan, research on the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries based on biomass electrodes has prospects for commercial development. In this study, carbon stems of water spinach (Ipomoea Aquatica) were used as electrodes on the battery. Water spinach is processed into nanocarbon by hydrothermal method and pyrolysis. The size of the nanocarbon particles from water spinach in this study was 200 mesh resulting from the grinding method. The type of battery made is a bag battery with a size of 8×12 cm by performing variable optimization by using a concentration of 50% LiCl/Li2SO4 electrolytes media, Polyurethane/Polyacrylate binder, and Triethylamine/Non-emulsifier. The highest power and energy values are generated from carbon based lithium-ion batteries from water spinach with LiCl electrolyte media, Polyurethane binder, and Triethylamine emulsion which is 5.404 W and 4.511 W∙h.

Opis:
Foliar application of growth regulators or fertilizers containing biostimulators can influence the uptake and accumulation of mineral elements by plants. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of foliar application of ‘Pentakeep V’ and diverse nitrogen fertilization on the content of: Ag, Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Ga, Li, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, Ti and V in spinach leaves. In 2006–2007 pot experiment with spinach Spinacia oleracea L. ‘Spinaker F1’ cultivation on silty medium loam was carried out. The experiment design included two sub-blocks: with and without foliar nutrition. Plants with foliar nutrition were sprayed twice with 0.02% w/v ‘Pentakeep V’ fertilizer (3000 dm3 water per 1 ha). In each sub-block soil nitrogen fertilization (in the form of ammonium nitrate) was applied in following combinations: 1 – control (without N), 2 – 50% N dose prior to seed sowing (25 mg N∙dm-3 of soil), 3 – 100% N dose prior to seed sowing (50 mg N∙dm-3 of soil). Foliar application of ‘Pentakeep V’ resulted in (compared to not treated plants): a) significant reduction of the Ag, Al, Ba, Ga, Sr and Ti concentration in plants not fertilized with nitrogen, b) increase in Sr content in spinach fertilized with 100% of N dose, c) relatively weak tendency to lower V accumulation in control plants. The lowest concentration of cobalt was found in plants fertilized with 50% of N dose and not treated with ‘Pentakeep V’. No interaction between foliar nutrition and nitrogen fertilization was found in reference to Cd, Cr, Li, Ni, Pb and Sb content in spinach plants.
Badaniami objęto dwa podbloki z dolistnym i bez dolistnego dokarmiania roślin. Rośliny dokarmiano dolistnie dwukrotnie nawozem ‘Pentakeep V’ w dawce 0,02% m/o, stosując w przeliczeniu 3000 dm3 wody na hektar. W obrębie podbloków zastosowano doglebowe przedsiewne nawożenie azotem (w formie saletry amonowej): 1 – kontrola (nienawożona azotem), 2 – 50% dawki N (25 mg N∙dm-3 gleby), 3 – 100% dawki N (50 mg N∙dm-3 gleby). Dolistna aplikacja ‘Pentakeep V’ w porównaniu do roślin niedokarmianych dolistnie powodowała: a) istotne zmniejszenie zawartości Ag, Al, Ba, Ga, Sr i Ti w roślinach kontrolnych nienawożonych azotem, b) zwiększenie zawartości Sr w szpinaku nawożonym 100% dawki N, c) stosunkowo niewielką tendencję do obniżenia zawartości wanadu w roślinach kontrolnych. Najniższą zawartością kobaltu charakteryzowały się rośliny nawożone 50% dawki N i niedokarmiane dolistnie. Nie stwierdzono istotnego wpływu współdziałania dokarmiania dolistnego Pentakeep V i nawożenia azotem na zawartość Cd, Cr, Li, Ni, Pb i Sb w szpinaku.

Opis:
Ulistnione wierzchołki pędów powyżej 15 cm, zawierały istotnie więcej suchej masy, azotu ogólnego, białka, azotanów i azotynów niż same liście.
The field experiment was carried out in the Experimental Station of Agricultural University of Szczecin in 2003. Different levels of soil hydratation did not have a significant effect on the yielding of New Zealand spinach. The content of nitrogen compounds in the plants was significantly dependant on the usable parts of spinach plant. It was proved that stems with leaves up to 15 cm in length contained significantly more dry matter, total nitrogen, total protein, nitrates and nitrites than leaf blades alone.

Opis:
Providing a sufficient level of moisture while growing vegetables is the key to a high yield, its excessive or insufficient amount can lead to negative phenomena – disrupt the normal functioning of plants, deteriorate their chemical composition, etc. Every year, in certain areas of Ukraine, in particular, the Right Bank Forest Steppe, one can observe unevenness of the amount in precipitation (from a very low level to an abnormally high level in a short period of time). During heavy rainfall, the plant nutrition system is disrupted due to the movement of chemicals into deeper layers of the soil, which may become inaccessible to the root system of plants, thereby changing the quantitative and qualitative indicators of their production. The purpose and main direction of the research was aimed at studying the influence of different levels of gray forest soil moisture in the conditions of the Right Bank Forest Steppe of Ukraine on the content, accumulation coefficients and danger of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in the leaf mass of parsley, dill and spinach grown in the zone of man-made influence (from mobile sources of pollution). According to research results, it was established that vegetable plants (parsley, dill, spinach) can accumulate several times more Pb and Cd per unit mass compared to the content of these toxicants in the same mass of soil. At a high level of soil moisture (98–134 mm) during the formation of the leaf mass of vegetables, a lower content and coefficient of accumulation of Pb and Cd in the leaf mass of parsley, dill, and spinach was observed, compared to moderate soil moisture (30–37 mm). The results of the research indicate that when growing parsley, dill, and spinach on gray forest soils under man-made conditions with a high (98–134 mm) level of moisture during the formation of their leaf mass, a decrease in the content of Pb and Cd in the leaf mass of these plants is observed.

Opis:
Water is a limited resource, hence there is a need for its judicious use. This study was designed to investigate the utilization and the effects of grey water irrigation on the growth parameters of African spinach (Amaranthus hybridus) and its soil properties when planted in a green house. The irrigation treatment consisted of Tap water (TW) and grey water (GW) collected from Akindeko Hostel in Federal University of Technology, Akure. The vegetables were planted in five bucket samples for each irrigation treatment. The water samples were assessed to determine chemical properties, while soil samples were collected and analysed before irrigation application and after harvest. Crop morphology that includes the plant height, number of leaves and stem girth parameters were recorded weekly after emergence. Our results indicate that the grey water type has the highest chemical parameters. These included TSS, SAR, pH, HCO3ˉ, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+. What is more, soil pH decreased in all the soil samples after the different water applications, the lowest pH being from grey water. The sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) also decreased in all the irrigation treatments. In addition, the plant height, number of leaves and stem girth of the crop were affected by the water type used. Herein, the crop irrigated with grey water had the highest morphology parameters. Furthermore, soil chemical properties were significantly affected by the use of grey water, hence, appropriate wastewater treatment and water management practices have to be followed to remove the toxic elements that could be hazardous to human health when crops produced on them are consumed.
