Opis:: The purpose of the article is to examine the relationship between television language and spoken Italian, applying the problem of the subjunctive as a reference point, frequently replaced by the indicative in colloquial contexts. Despite the fact that television language is now considered a reflection of Italian varieties and spoken-spoken language, there is still a heterogeneous language of the type transmitted. As such, it constitutes a set of various styles and registers, characterized by different linguistic phenomena from those of unattended speech. The effect of the study is to show that although in the field of Italian diametric varieties television language has more in common with spoken than written Italian, the dynamics of the processes that take place in both are still not the same.

Opis:: The subject of the research are old texts recorded as part of the “Spoken Polish of cities” project, which was carried out in Katowice, Kraków, Łódź and Wrocław in the last decades of the 20th century. The main aim of the article is to present a new study of Wrocław oral data from that period. The tools of digital humanities and corpus linguistics were used in the new study. The result of the team’s work is the Speech of Wrocław collection in Spokes resources.

Opis:: Spoken and written language are two modes of language. When learners aim at higher skill levels, the expected outcome of successful second language learning is usually to become a fluent speaker and writer who can produce accurate and complex language in the target language. There is an axiomatic difference between speech and writing, but together they form the essential parts of learners’ L2 skills. The two modes have their own characteristics, and there are differences between native and nonnative language use. For instance, hesitations and pauses are not visible in the end result of the writing process, but they are characteristic of nonnative spoken language use. The present study is based on the analysis of L2 English spoken and written productions of 18 L1 Finnish learners with focus on syntactic complexity. As earlier spoken language segmentation units mostly come from fluency studies, we conducted an experiment with a new unit, the U-unit, and examined how using this unit as the basis of spoken language segmentation affects the results. According to the analysis, written language was more complex than spoken language. However, the difference in the level of complexity was greatest when the traditional units, T-units and AS-units, were used in segmenting the data. Using the U-unit revealed that spoken language may, in fact, be closer to written language in its syntactic complexity than earlier studies had suggested. Therefore, further research is needed to discover whether the differences in spoken and written learner language are primarily due to the nature of these modes or, rather, to the units and measures used in the analysis.

Opis:: The article discusses the problems associated with segmented into separate sentences the stream of spoken language. There are both: theoretical problems (what is utterance?, what are its boundaries?, what are the theoretical proposals for the segmentation of utterances?), and practical problems (where is the real border between the two utterances in spoken language?, what criteria of segmentation stream of spoken language can be used?). The language material – which is the basis for the research presented in this article – comes from twenty task-oriented dialogue sessions with the participation of forty speakers performing a specific task. As a result of the analysis, based on available positions and theoretical reflection I managed to develop a tool for syntactical segmentation of the stream of spoken language. This tool can be presented in the form of a new (innovative) concept of definition of the utterance.

Opis:: The paper focuses on the semantic analysis of lexical borrowings of English origin used in informal spoken Polish. The study is based on the corpus, collected and analyzed by the present author. First, general information is given about the corpus, followed by the description of the methodological problems associated with studying lexical loans in spoken language. The main part of the paper focuses on the description of the loans found in the corpus. Special attention is paid to the newest borrowings, not noted in the dictionaries of Polish and/or dictionaries of foreign terms.

Assessment of Spoken English: Matura Examiners vs. Quantitative Measures.

Opis:: Niniejsza praca dotyczy porównania ocen egzaminatorów maturalnych z danymi ilościowymi uzyskanymi na podstawie analizy języka mówionego uczniów przystępujących do ustnego egzaminu maturalnego z języka angielskiego na poziomie rozszerzonym. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia podstawowe zagadnienia z zakresu testowania języka mówionego, takie jak: charakterystyczne cechy języka mówionego, komunikacyjne podejście do testowania języka mówionego, rodzaje i właściwości testów, techniki testowania, skale oceniania oraz pomiary ilościowe. Zawarto tutaj również opis części ustnej najpopularniejszego egzaminu międzynarodowego, jakim jest FCE. Rozdział drugi omawia nie tylko format i kryteria oceniania ustnego egzaminu maturalnego z języka angielskiego, ale także zmiany w przebiegu tego egzaminu w przyszłości. Badanie zaprezentowane w rozdziale trzecim miało na celu porównanie danych ilościowych uzyskanych na podstawie analizy języka mówionego czterech uczniów z ocenami ich wypowiedzi dokonanymi przez dwóch egzaminatorów ustnej matury z języka angielskiego. Pomiary ilościowe wykorzystane w tym badaniu dotyczyły czterech aspektów języka mówionego uczniów, a mianowicie: biegłości, poprawności, zaawansowania leksykalnego oraz zaawansowania gramatycznego. Badanie wykazało, że egzaminatorzy potraktowali priorytetowo niektóre z tych elementów języka mówionego podczas dokonywania ewaluacji wypowiedzi uczniów. Okazało się również, iż rodzaj zadania miał wpływ na język mówiony uczniów.
This thesis deals with the comparison of the Matura examiners’ ratings with the quantitative data obtained on the basis of the analysis of the spoken performances of the students taking the Oral Matura Exam in English at the extended level. The first chapter provides a detailed description of the essentials of oral testing such as the features of spoken language, the communicative view of oral language testing, test types, test qualities, testing techniques, rating scales, and quantitative measures. Also, an example of the most popular international exam – FCE test, which incorporates the speaking component, is provided. The second chapter discusses not only the test format and the assessment criteria of the oral component of the New Matura Exam in English but also the future changes to the exam procedures. The study presented in the third chapter was aimed at investigating the correspondence between the quantitative data obtained on the basis of the analysis of the four students’ oral performances and the markings provided by the two examiners of the Oral Matura Exam in English. The quantitative measures employed in this action research related to four aspects of the learners’ speech, i.e. fluency, accuracy, lexical complexity and grammatical complexity. The results of the investigation indicated that the examiners prioritized some of the elements of the students’ spoken performance over the other during their marking. Also, the task type was found to have an effect on the students’ oral production.
