Except the textbook the author provided aweb-page related material containing the data sets and various other material whichmakes the book more useful as the course monograph.

Opis:: Measurements and searches performed with the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC often involve signatures with one or more prompt leptons. Such analyses are subject to `fake/non-prompt' lepton backgrounds, where either a hadron or a lepton from a hadron decay or an electron from a photon conversion satisfies the prompt-lepton selection criteria. These backgrounds often arise within a hadronic jet because of particle decays in the showering process, particle misidentification or particle interactions with the detector material. As it is challenging to model these processes with high accuracy in simulation, their estimation typically uses data-driven methods. Three methods for carrying out this estimation are described, along with their implementation in ATLAS and their performance.

Opis:: In the years 1912-1914, the Łódź Exchange Committee made first attempts to establish Łódź municipal statistics. On September 19th 1917 the City Council decided to bring into being the Department of Statistics next to the municipal government of Łódź. In the period of Poland's twenty years of independence after World War I, the Department was supervised by statisticians Antoni Goerne, Edward Grabowski, Edward Rosset, who created the community of statisticians of Łódź. Since the year 1924, the first private schools were being established. They included the Academy of Socio-Economic Sciences (1924-1928) and Łódź Department of the Polish Free University (1928-1939). These institutions developed issues of statistics, demography and trade arithmetic. The following names are particularly worth mentioning: Gabriel Tołwiński, Włodzimierz Wroński, Stefan Dziewulski, Edward Rosset, Edward Szturm de Sztrem and Jan Wiśniewski, who was not exactly associated with Łódź but his scientific activity affected statisticians working there.
W latach 1912-1914 podejmowane były pierwsze próby organizacji łódzkiej statystyki miejskiej przez Komitet Giełdowy Łódzki oraz przez Komisję Statystyczną funkcjonującą przy Towarzystwie Popierania Pracy Społecznej. 19 września 1977 r. została przyjęta przez Radę Miejską uchwała powołująca z dniem 1 stycznia 1918 r. Wydział Statystyczny przy Zarządzie Miejskim w Łodzi. W okresie międzywojennym kierowali tym wydziałem: Antoni Goernc, Edward Grabowski, Edwart Rosset, którzy tworzyli środowisko statystyków łódzkich. Począwszy od 1924 r. zaczęły powstawać pierwsze uczelnie prywatne - Wyższa Szkoła Nauk Społecznych i Ekonomicznych (1924-1928) oraz Oddział Łódzki Wolnej Wszechnicy Polskiej (1928-1939). Uczelnie te rozwijały również zagadnienia statystyki, demografii i arytmetyki handlowej. Na szczególne podkreślenie zasługują następujące osoby Gabriel Tołwiński, Włodzimierz Wroński, Stefan Dziewulski, Edward Rosset, Edward Szturm de Sztrem oraz Jan Wiśniewski, który nie był związany z Łodzią, ale jego twórczość naukowa oddziaływała na statystyków tworzących w Łodzi.

Opis:: Whereas approximately 96.3% of the steel produced worldwide is made by continuous casting, great emphasis is put on the superior efficiency of this process. The water model of the tundish and mathematical modeling is often used for the simulation of the steel flow during continuous casting. The experiments were performed on a model of the tundish with two outlets, at two casting speeds (0.8 m.s-1 and 1.2 m.s-1). Eight setups of the tundish were evaluated, which differed in the design of the dams (with or without drainage holes), in their distance from the center of the tundish, and their height. The contribution of the work is the analysis of phenomena in the tundish water model in conditions of repeatability (ten repetitions). The goal is to find the setup providing the most symmetrical flow, with the minimum difference in the residence times Δτ on the two outlets. Taking into account the results obtained at both casting speeds, the most preferred is setup 2 with the 87 mm high dams placed 587 mm from the center of tundish (Δτ = 0.5). The setup 3 (Δτ = 8.25) appears to be the least appropriate. The higher the casting speed, the higher the number of unsuitable arrangements.

Opis:: Celem artykułu jest opis metod opracowywania wskaźnika wolumenu usług, zwanego także wskaźnikiem produkcji usług (Index of Services Production — ISP), oraz ich zastosowania w praktyce polskiej. Przedstawiono wpływ, jaki na szeregi czasowe wskaźników produkcji usług administracyjnej obsługi biura ma sposób pomiaru wartości obrotów (według produktu i według działalności, zależnie od wielkości przedsiębiorstw). W opracowaniu wykorzystano cztery metody obliczeń ISP, a następnie porównano szeregi czasowe wskaźnika uzyskane dla okresu badawczego 2010—2014 przy uwzględnieniu zastosowanych podejść. Na podstawie wyników przeprowadzonych prac ustalono, że każda z metod obliczania wskaźnika wolumenu usług odpowiada na inne potrzeby informacyjne, dlatego też przy wyborze metody liczenia wskaźnika powinno się uwzględniać cel podejmowanych analiz.
The aim of the article is to describe the methods for compiling the services volume index, named also as the index of services production (ISP), as well as its implementation in Polish practice. The influence, which the method for measuring turnover value (by product or by activity, regarding the size of enterprise) has on time series of production index for office administrative and support activities, was presented. In the research four methods for compiling the ISP were used and then the time series of indices computed for research period 2010—2014 were compared regarding the applied approaches. Based on the results it was settled that each method for computing the services volume index meets different information needs. Therefore, when the method for index computing is chosen, the purpose of undertaken analyses should be considered.

Opis:: The aim of the paper is to analyze variation in quality of life across Lower Silesia, taking into account the disparities within individual districts. At the beginning a theoretical analysis of the measurement quality of life based on available literature was made. In the next step based on the data covering the years 2010-2015, a statistical comparative analysis of the living situation in Lower Silesian districts was conducted which aim was to identify the key factors which would describe the similarities and differences in terms of quality of life among the Lower Silesian population. In the research were used data from the Local Databank, Central Statistical Office and from a survey. The analyzes used objective and subjective measures of quality of life. Research methods were also subjective and objective. Expert methods and selected methods of multidimensional comparative analysis–weighted standardized sums method were used.
